I would keep the "Green Alpinist" - I own one since July 2019 and I love it! :) My wife appreciates its beauty and its confortable wearing, too... For me personally the SARB017 is "the Alpinist".

Got mine in 2020, the last of the new old stock from Amazon if I remember right. This watch is sintemental as it's been around the world with me. It is also my #1 piece of gear for backpacking aside from my tent and sleeping bag.

I bought the green 2020 prospex Alpinist and I love it, even my hatred of cyclops lens has been cancelled! That being said, I just bought a SARB017 dial and signed crown off of watch parts plaza and am going to order the black date wheel off eBay, then I will have my ultimate Alpinist! I had to do it, the green on the SARB is a bit lighter and I like it better, not to mention that framed date window.
You were able to capture the actual color of the dial in the close ups, nice work! Most vids/pics have it end up looking way too "emerald", but to my eyes it looks much more "olive" IRL

Almost bought the 121 but decided too reach it first and went through the 🐇 🕳️ . Found out about the 017 and the hype around it, I stumbled to the 201 model for 650,- and decided to go for the grey dial because it is more natural color and only 2021 produced.
Great review! You did the Alpi justice! Dude, which one to keep?? No brainier! Gotta keep the SARB! I’m running mine on an Uncle Seiko bracelet and love it way more than when it was on strap. Almost laughable how good this watch is for the price. Seiko at their best. The only things I’d change are more resistance to the compass crown and lume orientation at 12,3,6,9. An absolute must have, bonafide classic! Keep it!!!

I’ve had an emotional roller coaster with this watch. Originally got the sarb017 a few years ago. After about a year and a half, I sold it due to not wearing it enough. That being said, I’ve ordered another one because I miss it so much. It was so much fun to wear and I miss the quirkiness of it. That being said, once I get it again, I will not be selling it again. Also, for whatever reason, I always get “poker table” vibes from this watch. I guess it’s the green and red and gold etc lol

@@aussieexpat good question. I’m not sure. I bought the strapcode Angus jubilee, and it’s horrible. It’s so much metal, for such a small watch. Why anyone needs a door hinge security clap for a tiny watch I don’t know.
I’m going to get the oem one and see how it is. Also I think the sarx straps fit too?
Uncle Seiko makes some great bracelets. The beads of rice is my favorite!
Got mine around 2017 when I started collecting, 310USD... 400USD for SARB033 and SARB035. Gone are the days!

Hey Falling Titan, great review. Have the Prospex addition. Love it. Took off the croc and put on the seiko flat leather that comes on the others, which I like better for daily, but REALLY like yours on SS. Def going to get that for mine.
I was never able to bond with the SARB017 that being said I have been wanting to build a SPB155 case and bracelet with a SPB119 dial handset 6R35 and a SARB017 caseback it's just a matter of waiting for the parts to come up at the right price Cheers!
Ive had the Sarb017 since 2016. Love the watch but it doesn't keep good time. it looses 2-3 minutes a day. I agree that what came after are not Real alpinist but I defiantly like the look of your Gray Alpinist. The movement is upgraded also, I believe.Nice looking watch!!
I recently upgrade to a vintage alpinist from the 90s! The red alpinist! My main reason was the word alpinist on the dial and the chronometer high end movement.
I had an Alpinist a few years back, but I never bonded with it. I felt it wore larger than its dimensions would suggest on my skinny wrist, and the thing just felt bulbous. I ended up selling it for about what I paid for it, which I considered a win at the time, but maybe I should have held onto it a bit longer? Who knows.
no you shouldn't. if there wasn't a spark in the first place, it wouldn't be there long-term. look at it this way, someone else is enjoying what you let go right now... and you have the funds enjoy another watch that you click with instantly
If you have girly wrists it isn't the watch for you for sure.
The Grey looks better in my opinion. The text on the Dial looks neater as well. The bolder text on the Green version is distracting.

I like the gold hands and indices on the green one, gives beautiful colour contrast. But I feel the grey one goes well with everything. I'd say keep the gray one and sell the green version which reminds me of a roulette wheel more than being an outdoor watch. Goodluck

I want an SLA Alpinist. I will hold out for an 8L or 6L movement in an Alpinist with zaratsu polish. My bet is it'll be 2900 and just blow the 36mm Explorer away!

@@EscapementWatch there’s a video where average bros combines two oem seiko bracelets to make one which tapers from 20 to 16 for the alpinist. Another option for your super alpinist
SPB089 on the slimmer Super-Jub II that tapers. SARB017 on the Super-O. Wouldn't sell any of them. Keepers!
beautiful watch.....just not for me....my OCD could not handle the inner compass not lining up and shifting constantly...threw mine on an Strapcode Angus Jubilee.....still couldn't bond with it......I sold mine after a few months. I have the No Compass Alpinist (Baby Alpinist, SPB155)....watched ur video....threw a SARB017 caseback on it......Uncle Seiko President bracelet......its perfect for me........great video FT
yeah I know how you feel!!! I've had 4 Alps and I always end up selling them. Mostly because no good bracelet I like except the OEM but the OEM never fits me right. too loose or too tight! And I never like Alps on straps for some reason. I'm going to try out the new laurel style alps next maybe they will stick!

I just bought the brown dial Alpinist during a Black Friday sale half price. It's really an incredible watch. I never bought the original because I found the green dial a bit too flashy. Plus the straps the new ones come with is a significant improvement. I can't understand the hate for the new Alpinists, I think the dial variety and the improved movement makes the newer models better. I actually like the cyclops, I think it gives the watch an even greater vintage feel. The only significant feature of the SARB017 that's better is the solid caseback, no need for a display caseback to show a Seiko 6R35.
One from each brand? That seems harsh. I have to limit myself on Seikos though, because I'd have a giant collection of too many Seikos. I love my SPB089 - I love blue, it's the non-cyclops SARB style, AND it's limited. I think you should keep the SARB017. It's just too classic.

Are you in a hurry to sell? If not then give it a while. See if you're not wearing one enough to keep. Personally I've sold watches I love but didn't wear, and I'd rather someone else enjoyed them.
How were you able to find this gem in new condition and at $450USD? WOW! Most of the new models have the prospect PS logo, this one is the original old stock as you have stated, no prospect logo, and best of all, NO cyclops, I absolutely hate those things, perfect size and gorgeous, love the review..keep the green one or I’d buy it from you

I used to have the exact same watch and I flipped it. The inner compass bezel constantly moving just during the watch was worn simply drove me mad.

I like the green dial with the gold hands. I can't really get into the one eyed wonder. They just look like oversized rear wing spoiler on a box stock civic, i.e., they don't belong there and it shows. Keep the cyclops and sell me the green dial ;-) Thanks for the video... :-)

I got the strapcode angus jubilee on mine but they couldn't refund me on a minor defect on the bracelet. Not sure if I recommend it.
The angus is too huge anyways. The links and clasp belong on a 1000m divers pro watch. Would not recommend the angus.

under 200 amp means it needs a service for sure. these 6R's like to stay around 220-250amp on the wrist. I'd give it to a watchmaker and do a full service. should cost you 150.
