It's not bad XGI. It's just the cell shading they use to try and make the CGI parts fit in with the rest of the art style makes it look a little weird. It's understandable they use CGI for the transformers. Drawing them in 2D would be tens of times more work than animating a pre-existing model and letting a cell shader do the rest. The biggest problem with low budget is not production costs, but paying work hours.

The setting looks promising, but to me the main feature are the Japanese incarnations of the Predacons - they're so much better than the US ones. The heads, the colors - just about everything about them seems more interesting.

It's been proven in their history that they're really outdated when it comes to certain things. Takara is no different. It's basically a "why fix something that isn't broken?" mindset. If Energon made money through shitty combiners, why abandon the formula? They're more insane than Michael Bay. It's actually kind of depressing.
Darwin, its a cartoon dude. Imagination can be gagaed differently over seperate cultures and artist renditions. We meaning the USA recreated a Japanese classic twice called Godzilla, and both times the concept was different than the original.

Cybertron was even worse, Energon occasionally cel-shaded the robots. Cybertron just went "Fuck it, let's make all robots 3D".
