    Have always been fascinated by this layout ever since I saw it in MRP. Simple but interesting. Good to see it in action. Thanks Tom!

      Hi Brian, Thanks for your comments. Jared's layout is a real pleasure to operate. It is amazing that running one local train can take around 3 hours to complete. He has done an excellent job of replicating how it was when the prototype operated. Jared hosts regular ops sessions and hopefully you can attend one if you are ever in the Athens GA area. -Tom

    Wonderful video of a historic branch for our area. It's been gone 50 years now. If you put an RS2 with tiger stripes on the head end it would fit in for a later time period-same scenes lol. Two of the depots survived for a while after abandonment in 1973 but they have also disappeared. A friend who tried to save the branch for an excursion just passed away a couple of years ago and we had retraced the branch with an NRHS group who studied the line. This layout gives us the feel of actually being there!

      I was affiliated with the "Flint Hills Railway" that sought to buy the line from the scrapper that had purchased it from the Santa Fe. The local farmers sued, as they wanted the ROW. District Judge ruled in their favor, and that was the end of the (ad)venture.

      @@AllenCNW441 Yes Art Gibson had some pretty hard feelings about that in many ways. He helped me with the driving tour. He was a super friend.

    Thanks for posting this. I have been planning to recreate the same atsf Alma district in n scale. I live about 15 minutes from Burlingame Kansas. I fell in love with the idea years ago. Until now I had only saw photos of this layout.

    Wow! Regardless of your era and regardless of what RR you model, I highly recommend you watch this video.
    You will learn the wonderful sense of purpose this train operates with. That each move had a logical story behind it. Operations like this add a whole new dimension to thinking about your trains. And along the way you will see superb modeling and scenery. The cut and fill for the dry creek with the culvert scene looks so real, I thought it was real!
    Tom, you have created another masterful piece of videography. Your technical prowess and story telling made this so fun to watch, I had to watch it again and thats not an easy task considering I'm a diesel era, west coast modeler!
    Great layout! Great video!
    Jim

      Hi Jim. Thank you so much for your very nice comments. Jared's layout is so much fun to operate because it functions just like the prototype did in 1943. When I attended one ops session on Jared's layout we operated with hand signals between the crew members as there were no radios in 1943. It added a whole different aspect to the ops session.
      With my videos I try to tell a story instead of just showing trains running through scenes with no purpose. There are always things to learn from other modelers layouts and I try to present that in my videos. I am glad to hear you enjoyed the video.-Tom

    Very impressive I exchanged letters with Jared years ago when he first started this layout. He provided me with a copy of the track layout and town plat for Bradford. My grandparents live in Bradford for about 30 years. My dad's people are from the Burlingame area and farmed around Eskridge so I am familiar with the MAB line.

      Hi Dean, I'll pass your comments on to Jared. Jared is making good progress on his layout and has completed more scenery since the video was recorded. I have operated on his layout several times and he has done an excellent job of replicating the prototype. I really enjoy operating sessions on his layout and feel like I have gone back in time to Kansas in 1943.-Tom

      Jared has built a very nice layout that so much fun to operate. Every ops session is a little different depending on where the cars are spotted and what work needs to be done. In addition to having a great layout, Jared is a gracious host and fixes a delicious lunch before every ops session. -Tom

    Hi Tom and Jared - I enjoyed the video of this very nice model railroad. Jared has done a very good job of depicting branch line railroading in the 1940's. Thank you for the trip over the line! Mike

    I love layouts this size, and when ops sessions are at realistic speeds. Being to several clubs and how the6 rushed everything and trains were just stacked behind each other it’s just given me a bad rub in terms of wanting to run on other layouts or clubs. Slow speeds, prototype ops, that’s the way to go.

    • @ThomasKlimoski
      @ThomasKlimoski  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jordan, Thanks for your comments on Jared's layout. I have operated on his layout several times and is one of my favorites for all the reasons you mentioned, slow speeds and realistic ops being at the top of the list. A typical operating session to run one train out and back on his layout takes about 2 to 3 hours at a nice relaxed pace.- Tom

    The 9441 is a locomotive type not seen too often on Santa Fe layouts. Was it more or less assigned to that branch during his era modeled ?

    • @ThomasKlimoski
      @ThomasKlimoski  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I spoke to Jared and he said the current model locomotive 9441 is not prototypical for the Alma Branch and is a stand in until he can get a 2-6-2 which was used on the line. He hopes to have the 2-6-2 later this year along with a doodlebug which ran on the line in the era that he models.-Tom

    I think the grass looks great....do you know what products and colours have been used?

    • @ThomasKlimoski
      @ThomasKlimoski  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Jared uses the Heki Wild Grass fiber mats, colors HK1575 and HK 1576. Those are the same ones I used on my layout. The mats also come in a larger sizes and are available from Scenic Express. The loose fibers are used in a static grass applicator for the grass you see on the ballast and between the rails. -Tom

      Hi Angelo, Thanks for your comments. I will try to make the captions stay on the screen a little longer on my next video. The issues is that some of the shots I cut pretty tight which reduces the time for the captions. I try to keep the action moving and the viewers attention by using short clips. One advantage of captions is that you can pause the video to read them if you need to or watch the video again ;)-Tom

      Hi Horst,
      I have the issue with captions too; I found a work around that will work on any youtube video that I've tried so far:
      1 Click or press the pause icon
      The video will look like there is somewhat of a shade over it.
      2. Then click or press any blank area of the video screen itself that does not already have a icon for performing some action and that will remove the dark shade, allowing you to clearly see the caption.
      3. And of course when you are done reading, you can press or click play to resume.
      I hope this helps!
      Jim

    • @ThomasKlimoski

      Hi Jim, Thanks for the tip. I try to leave the captions up for as long as I can, but I cut the video so tight between shots (to keep it from becoming boring) sometimes there is just not enough time for the captions. I always figured viewers could pause the video or watch it a few times if they miss something ;). -Tom

      @@jamesharness6478 Hi Jim, thank you for your help. So it can go, but you recognice that the time for reading was to short, when the text is gone and I have to stop it and go back and start again. I know the problem, because I have also loaded up some videos on youtube. If you are making the video, you know the text you want to install, so you are reading much faster than one who sees the text the first time and didn´t know that a text was coming. For all, have much fun with your SF-RR.
