Nice job. Looking forward to part 2. My dad who was a toolmaker but not a clock guy made barrels for a carriage years ago but only had a South Bend 10k so he broached them and made an index for behind the chuck....worked out well but for sure was along shot.
The old 10k is in my basement now and i am in the process of getting it going. Dad sadly passed almost 2 years ago.
    Best Wishes,
    Jim

    James,
Great introduction to your work. I am looking forward to the seeing your videos. I have been watch the videos by Steffen Pahlow and have to thank Tom Lipton (OxTools) for the tip about your series. I saw the shop tour video with your Hardinge Cataract lathe and it had DRO indicators on the slides. Do you use these or rely more on the using the dial calipers for most of your rough measurements? Just curious.
Thank for producing the clockmaker series of videos.
    Regards, Paul Jones

This looks like an interesting series, I'm looking forward to the rest of your videos, so it's thanks to our mutual friend Mr L. for putting me onto your channel. Out of curiosity, have you seen any of Steffen Pahlow's videos?
Is it not considered normal practice, when machining one of those collets, to have some form of plug in the collet to maintain the diameter whilst also holding the collet tightly?

The idea is that you clamp a pin in the centre of the collet so that it is at its maximum size and tight, then you can accurately machine the step to size, take out the pin and you have full compression range to hold the item to be turned. The above steps are the same for soft jaws for a normal scroll chuck, but there it is to be certain the jaws are under equal tension, again for accuracy.

Further to the above, this page might help,

although for 5C the idea is the same

James, I like your channel from what I've seen so far. Thanks for sharing. It seems like you're getting a lot of chatter on your lathe. Is it possible that your cross slide gib needs tightening?
