Great. It's no surprise, but the fact that Agnes Varda keeps showing up more than almost any other director in these lately is fantastic.
I had the great fortune to interview Ms. Holland for one of our local PBS stations around 1995 when "Total Eclipse" was being released. She was fascinating and very kind to this nervous, newbie TV interviewer. So nice to see her again!
Her version of The Secret Garden is almost unbearably lovely. One of the best films of the 90s.
Agreed!! Europa Europa is also very good.
Amazing anecdote about Antonioni. Like a scene from his films minus the tears
I love her version of “The Secret Garden”
no shade to the filmmaker, but i actually prefer the '87 version
same here.
I love her version
"The Gleaners" by Agnes Varda is a special film I've rewatched so many times. Thank you so much for coming to the Criterion Closet and sharing your film loves. You are incredible.
Can totally see the influence of DIAMONDS OF THE NIGHT on GREEN BORDER.
need a 4k uhd extended directors cut criterion collection blu-ray of Holland's The Secret Garden
Great mix of old and new films
It was lovely seeing her movie picks. Even though The Secret Garden was a childhood favorite of mine, it has got richer and better every time I have watched it as an adult.
I second that Le Bonheur and La Notte are masterpieces. It took me awhile to get into Antonioni because his films are very slow but once you adapt your sensibility a little they are worth repeat viewing
Angieszka is absolutely brilliant. Such a beautiful heart! I love her. ❤
I love her adaptation of Washington Square.
This woman knows true cinema
What an incredible haul. She's awesome.
Nice.. I am looking forward to Mackenzie Davis.. she posted a picture from the closet a few days ago
Great story about my favorite director, Antonioni, and La Notte is one of his top films.
she IS mother ❤
She's got great taste
Wow, very rare that someone picks almost the exact list I would pick! Love it.
Great picks Ms. Holland, very inspired to watch and rewatch some of them.
Agnieszka Holland has several excellent films under her belt, some of which she also wrote. Her 1992 film Olivier, Oliivier is a small masterpiece. If you find it, don't miss it!
Great director, brilliant choices. I’m intrigued by “Diamonds of the Night” will be adding it to my collection soon.
Holland is right in calling that film a masterpiece, one of the summits of the Czech New Wave. The technical virtuosity of the film is astonishing, and there is a central climactic sequence that is one of the most suspenseful and upsetting sequences I have ever encountered in cinema--I actually caught my breath while watching it, it was so emotionally impactful.
Agnes Varda: The Complete Films
La Notte
Parasite
Perfect Days
Anatomy of a Fall
Diamonds of the Night
Spoiler !
@@spanishbaldman The titles are also cited at the end of the upload.
Fascinating that she picked so many 21st Century titles, probably because she’s seen all the great 20th century ones.
I love her film “In Darkness”
the way she holds that boxset.. what a queen
I love her movie Europa Europa. It's one of the best German movies ever. I can't wait to watch her recent film, Green Borders.
It's fantastic.
I'd love it if she did one on Gaza or Yemen
One of the great Holocaust films! I have never forgotten it.
What makes it a "German movie" though?
@@hetmanjz It had a German producer, a large amount of German cast and crew (including the lead actor), partly German funding, is largely in the German language, and deals with a German subject.
you are the best director Agnieszka 😍
I love the concept of this series but have always wanted it to be more similar to Amoeba's What's in my Bag videos where there's editing showing you some sample/clips of what's being spoken about. Would be much more interesting that way.
Wow, I'm moved. Truly.
Great choices.
She had me at Parasite and Perfect Days
Legend
Love her! Great picks!
So hyped for this. Green Border is one of the best films of the century.
Its full of shit film. Im know what im saying beacuse i live in Poland.
Sincerely, cannot wait to start watching Miss Holland’s films or should I say Miss Holland’s opus?
Opus’s
Holy god. Secret Garden release when, Criterion?!? I love her.
Love her
I just had a long conversation about her body of work, over the phone with my dad, just the other day. He had seen most of her early, breakthrough stuff. I got to know her with The Secret Garden and The Wire. She's a real mix of a journeyman director and an auteur.
Would her first name be Agnes if she were French??
Yes.
that Agnes Varda box set looks so sexy. Does it come w books and extras? Drool.
Anyone who picks Parasite gets a 👍 from me.
Her new film Green Border is stunning.
a legend
L E G E N D !!!
James Gray video?
I want to give her a hug
😊😊😊😊😊😊great
Since more and more of these videos have pre-selected titles pulled a little ways off the shelves, how about pulling out five or ten decoys so we can't know what they're going to pick ahead of time? (Half-kidding. I think.)
This is your major gripe? That they do some pre-production in the Criterion Closet?
Her movie green border is very harmful and hurtful to Polish people. She should be ashamed of herself (I say this as a Pole).
I don't understand what she meant by "women directors' point of view" when she was talking about Anatomy of a Fall. I think that if Anatomy of a Fall was made by a male director, it wouldn't have been very different.
Alice Rohrwacher is in my opinion a better example of a woman's point of view in cinema.
Never seen La Notte or Perfect Days but ive heard of them. Are they woke? Might have to check Perfect Days out
Yeah super woke. Dont watch - might make you gay
and you still can't explain what "woke" means can you? we've done this song and dance time and time again, and every time you end up bailing once you realize the jig is up
how is your vocabulary so limited that you have to constantly use "woke" as a descriptor for damn near everything?
@@h0lly_blue I dont recall your account, sorry. Have you seen these films? Is there a message being pushed
@@RB-.- so you're not the same guy who said Kurosawa movies weren't "real movies"? it was only two months ago - but hey, I get it, they say memory is usually the first to go
ALL films push a message, wether you get it or not,and I agree, what do you mean by "woke"?
TRUMP 2024
Trump for prison 2024! Sorry, there are no films by the KKK or the Proud Boys for your taste.
is this just what you do when you can't find anything to make fun of whoever's in the closet, just start crashing out unprompted? are you okay, Matt?
As interesting as it would be to see Trump in the closet, I just don't think it will happen. Sorry.
@@JavaJunkyI don’t know, I think he has a real *shot*
@@JavaJunky JD Vance is already in there with a couch unfortunately
@criterioncollection can you highlight the movies for a few seconds that they are talking about? Like letterboxd does with the top 4 movie interviews.
Because I don't always understand it or sometimes the cc is not correctly displayed.
