You gotta think butch had that moment of clarity like jules where we ask ourselves “I would never wish that upon my anyone” especially enemies I mean it becomes a noble thing to save someone who tried killing you moments earlier. Than to be told by Marcellas that you lost your l.a privilege as a “deal” not an ultimatum watching the movie and looking at each of the characters scenes you see some natural about the craziness and some who (jules,Marcellus, and butch) who have a sudden change of heart and those who are bitter and don’t want to change the pattern like (vincent) who payed for his life with what he does

Butch ain't evil, and he didn't hate him; he only wanted to kill him to save himself. But he saw an opportunity to take out a couple evil cunts and also clear the slate with Wallace, who didn't deserve what was happening to him.

@@NomadicReprobate I doubt that he wanted to keep slate I think it’s more of an instinct since your going to flee the state or country to get away from someone so powerful as Marcellus Wallace who makes comments like wanting someone hiding In bowl of rice to kill him . I think at the end he realized how fucked up it is to have that done especially since the choice of picking who it was was Eenie meenie miny moe lol I think butch knew he would but I don’t think Marcellus would save butch in that moment hence the moment of clarity butch helped showing emotion humanity

    • @mocisme
      @mocisme 2 ปีที่แล้ว +173

I read it the other way. Butch looks relaxed but alert when he asks the question.
Then when Marcelus moves the shotgun (although downwards), Butch moves the sword to his dominate hand ready to attack/defend if need be. Because it's not clear what the movement means quite yet.
Then after MW says "there is no me and you. not no more" and confirms the beef is squashed, Butch goes back to that original relaxed but alert hand position

@@bionmccool He could have. It just would have ended badly. Marsellus saying "Deal?", With that important question mark is him making the offer and asking Butch if they have an understanding, a gentlemen's agreement if you will. What Butch did with it was up to him.
It's important to note that while Marsellus has the gun, he has his back to Butch. So while Marsellus is being nice and offering the deal, Butch is also respecting the man he just rescued by not killing him, even though the man wanted to kill him
Marsellus also likely knows that if he'd been in Butch's shoes, he may not have come back. So knowing that, and that Butch had not only no reason to come back, but the additional reason to just leave Marsellus where he was, Marsellus respected Butch, even though he screwed him out of the money. Some things are more important than money, and a business man like Marsellus understands that.

It is interesting how this movie portrays honor amongst some pretty lousy human beings. Marcellus could just as easily have killed Butch but didn't since Butch rescued him and saved his life. Jules could just as easily have killed Ringo and Yolanda in the final scene but instead chise to send them down a better path. To me, this movie is all about redemption and the positive morality portrayed by characters that seem initially to be entirely amoral. It is one of the best movies ever made IMHO and the final scene is only bested by the final scene in the Charlie Chaplin movie City Lights.

This is my favorite story in Pulp Fiction. Christopher Walken’s speech about the watch sets the theme - men do irrational and seemingly insane things for honor and brotherhood when faced with true adversity. In Butch’s father’s and Walken’s case, it was hiding a watch up their butts for years while in a Vietnamese prison camp. In Butch’s case, it was forgoing a chance at escape to save a gangster, that was deadset on murdering him just moments before, from a greater evil. It’s all totally irrational but makes so much sense on a human level.

She absolutely loved it as I knew she would but then maybe six months later we were sitting on the couch flipping through channels and came across it again. I sat in quiet disbelief as it became obvious that she was loving it again but had absolutely no recollection of having seen it before, she even made the exact same comments that she had previously. You can take basically any scene in this movie and gush about how awesome it is
But this, this scene, has to be my favorite scene in cinema history
Just a shot of two people, former enemies, that went through hell together and took control over the situation in the most badass and undeniable way possible
Two former enemies that now see eye to eye, no more bad feelings, just the wish to forget what happened both to them and between them forever
And that haunting monologue delivered by Ving Rhames... the most badass of lines said by a man with a ballgag hanging around his neck
Together with Bruce Willis'best performance to date (in my opinion) and the sheer lack of movement that makes every bit of body language seem like it could not have any more weight to it...
Shit like this just doesn't get made anymore

This scene right HERE - not the scenes that preceded it - but this clip here - is perfectly written, acted, and cast. If you hadn’t seen this movie before and just this TH-cam video, even after the horrific implications of what happened, you’d be compelled to see more of the movie. You can see the torment in Ving’s eyes that he just suffered, and how badly he wants to inflict that pain on the guy on the ground. The body language shows the heavy tension between Ving and Bruce’s characters literally being lifted…almost like you can physically see it. We can surmise things went really really bad between the two of them, but there was always some sort of underlying mutual respect. All of that (and possibly more) you can get from these couple of minutes here. Genius.

It was actually really cool he went back to save him, it offered no tactical advantage, but just showed Butch was such a bro he couldn't stand the thought of someone going through that
You could chalk it up as some way of redeeming himself, selfishly, seeing as he only asks about himself once they get to talking, or so it would be one less thing to worry about when he goes to sleep... But honestly, Butch never seemed like that.
Butch understood he was a bad person, but he wasn't psychopathic. Maybe he understood how important his old boss was to the community, or that he'd be hunted down if anyone ever found his part out. It was the best decision, and Butch's ability to think clearly after such a... Uncomfortable experience, certainly redeemed him in my book

It takes a Tarantino movie to have mortal enemies make peace like this. If this had been the real world, Marcellus would've had even more of a motivation to kill Butch (as now, not only did Butch try to rip him off, but he is also the only other person who knows of this little humiliating episode; no way would he trust in the honor system here), and Butch, considering he was already trying to kill Marcellus with the car, would have left Marcellus to his undignified fate in a heartbeat.

There is a code amongst the 1%ers that they all follow.
Family doesn't get involved in any business, period.
No dealings guns or drugs to kids or pregnant women.
      No spousal abuse
During times of peace, all fights and arguments are to be left at the door.
If you harm a kid or rape a woman you're dead.
There's a reason that gangbangers stay far away from 1%ers. They have a strict code they all follow and put up for outsiders to follow. They're also VERY vindictive if you break it. People have been had chains locked to their necks and drug down roads at 80mph because they broke the rules.
