"The Lark" was originally No. 10 of a group of twelve songs that Glinka wrote in 1840 and entitled "Farewell to St. Petersburg". Mili Balakirev, born 1836, got to know Glinka in 1855 and admired him deeply. Glinka stimulated Balakirev to start composing. He has paraphrased several of Glinka's works, "The Lark" being the most famous of them. This work owes to Glinka the exceptionally beautiful and sad melody, and to Balakirev the wonderful flowing figuration.
