This duet by these two beautiful ladies, sadly we've lost one, takes me back to a time I truly enjoyed. A time when anything seemed possible. Why not? We were very young yet with more years to come. But now sadly I fear we're losing the England I wanted to visit and enjoy the joy's of youth, Carnaby Street and Swinging England. But it was not to be. The Marines and Vietnam awaited me first. The years have flowed like rushing water and now from what I see and read, that England doesn't seem to exist anymore. Oh well memories remain fresh and unchanged.
What a Magic Moment, Cilla and Mary singing .together. what a miracle! And yeh, I'm from the US. Britain had some of the world's best female singers from Vera Lynn to Adele. Just marvelous.
hen I hear the two singing, I am both happy and sad at the same time. Glad that they sang this together, sad that we are now so old, I was born in 1951 and had a crush on Mary very early on ... great woman and sitter
I could hear the song all day, it reminds me of a great love that never had a changse, but after almost 50 years it is still there like the first day we met
A wonderful song, with a wisdom that has often helped me when I felt really bad again, then I watch this video, with two charming ladies with great voices. The problem is still there, but I am feeling better and I am trying to implement this wisdom. So far it has always worked. Thanks a lot for this !
So delighted to see first time two of my favourite 60s British singers together performing a great Joni Mitchell song Both Sides Now. Lovely. Thanks for posting.
Both Sides Now was recorded by Judy Collins in 1967, but it’s a Joni Mitchell song. It’s a toss-up for me who did it better. Joni’s recording may be a little more sorrowful. Mary H’s version is also gorgeous.
For a voice with bells in it (but without blasting [though she could!]), I always go to Judith Durham (mostly with The Seekers). Not sure if she ever did Both Sides Now, though; anyone know? Mary's is nice too; and Cilla, though very different, makes for an interesting duet - when they harmonise in particular.
Thanks PhiPhi! It wasn't until TH-cam that I even knew these two phenomenal talents existed! I of course remember their hits, and Celia's hit too with Alfie. I just didn't know who sang "Alfie" but loved the song. This duet with "Both Sides Now" is of course a big favorite. This is very special and thanks PhiPhi for sharing this! I've seen at times the numbers, very similar, rolling. Does that mean this came from some television station archives? I think in 1974 video tapes existed, and forgot what they were called, precursor to the VCR tapes.
I hope in the two years since you posted that that you've found and enjoyed plenty of other clips by them! Mary of course plenty of others - Those Were The Days being the best-known of course, but other styles - Knock Knock Who's There I think might have been Eurovision. Cilla (not Celia!) Black (real name Priscilla White!) was very big in the 1960s and '70s - she had her own show (from which this is taken), and there has been a TV series dramatising her life. As well as Alfie, You're My Wold and Anyone Who Had A Heart were big hits, but she sang many others. Yes, by 1974 videotape was in common use by TV companies: if you're trying to remember names, AMPEx and UMatic were comon ones.
Robert I wouldn't agree who was better, Cilla was vastly more experienced, both have unique qualities, I prefer Mary's voice but she couldn't have sung songs like "Anyone who Had A Heart" with the power Cilla had for sure
Robert Clatworthy ~ Obvious? Not to me. In this particular comparison, it isn't about who's voice is better, it's who's singing you prefer. Cilla had every bit as good a voice as Hopkin, a bit stronger in fact, but we're looking at two vocalists with different styles, and that's what it's truly all about.
I was listening without watching, and at times thought it was a poor and trebly recording or that it was a young and off key Mary Hopkin - then I realized that all the parts that were making my ears bleed were sung by Cilla Black. It is indeed obvious that Mary Hopkin had the infinitely superior voice.
She is 69 and quite reclusive but her daughter Jessica Lee Morgan sings and performs her songs th-cam.com/video/oYQEQfavlgc/w-d-xo.html This was her a few years ago
i love them both, but, mary has the better voice for this song, i think...and, her calm presence seems to have rubbed off on cilla, who's expected shreaky personality is toned down a grateful notch or four lol
Can you picture Mary Hopkins had she had the benefits today's young female singers have, fancy clothes, super song arrangements and hair and make up including a full set of porcelain teeth...back off Taylor Swift.... Katy Perry....
This song is nice.I have listened to this song for for going on 43 years now.
Why is it that everytime I hear Mary's voice, I feel tears well up inside me? Could it be a certain beauty that is forgotten on the new generation?
I get the same feeling from her and i think that is the reason, We dont have people like this anymore.
Aside from her beautiful, angelic voice, her calm ideation of the beautiful lyrics of the songs she sings, is contagious.

Vow,very first time have heard this duet, very good performance,Mary is Mary, who is still one of my favourite artists of all times
Mary made this sad world a better place
She did 👍🏻
A reminder of what real singers and songs were!!!
What a treat, Mary with the beauty of a Pre-Raphaelite goddess, and voice to match.
I love to hear Mary's voice. My favorite song of Mary...Those were the days.
Any song she sings has a unique beauty to it.
She has always had that "Renaissance" air of music
about her that brings about "timelessness." ❤✝
Pure Angel with a awesome voice to match thank you Mary beautiful music
This is folk music at its best,Someone once said about folk music that it will get you in the end
Mary has an amazing voice.
What a Magic Moment, Cilla and Mary singing .together. what a miracle! And yeh, I'm from the US. Britain had some of the world's best female singers from Vera Lynn to Adele. Just marvelous.
For me the best line up was in the 60s. Dusty Springfield, Sandie Shaw, Petula Clark, Lulu plus Cilla of coz. What a fabulous time.
@@rjleslee Polly Brown from Pickettywitch?
THANK YOU FOR THIS. This makes me so very happy.

Sitter?
What a treat.Thank you for posting this for us. (I miss you, Cilla.)

What a beautiful woman. These are Very nice versions of these songs.
A wonderful song, with a wisdom that has often helped me when I felt really bad again, then I watch this video, with two charming ladies with great voices. Thanks for this Gem !!!
So delighted to see first time two of my favourite 60s British singers together performing a great Joni Mitchell song Both Sides Now. Lovely. Thanks for posting.
It would have been better with Sandy Denny. Cilla Black has a tendency to force her voice and shout instead of singing... :-(
I have been waiting 40 years to see this video on TH-cam
Just Beautiful!! Thanks for sharing!
WOW that is lovely--such a wonderful tribute to the Judy Collins number

Hermosa mujer con hermosa voz, irradia alegría optimismo, e esperanza, amor. Mary is love.
A beautiful soul.
Lovely!
The clear pure voice of ringing bells.
For a voice with bells in it (but without blasting [though she could!]), I always go to Judith Durham (mostly with The Seekers). Not sure if she ever did Both Sides Now, though; anyone know?

She has such a Beautiful voice.
I like her..Mary Hopkin
Love their rendition of Both Sides Now but it seems incomplete without the final "I really don't know life at all" verse.
Beatiful woman , perfect lady and voice.
Such a lovely English Rose, don't make em anymore...
Irish, I think.

Mary Hopkin kuuluu maailman parhaimpiin laulajiin. Laulutaito vertaansa vailla ja miellyttävä lauluääni. Siinäpä ne tärkeimmät avut.
bellissima ballata folk
Love them both!

Beautiful unique and powerful vocalist...
It was quite obvious that Mary had a far better voice than Cilla and it really proves it with this recording.
Robert I wouldn't agree who was better, Cilla was vastly more experienced, both have unique qualities, I prefer Mary's voice but she couldn't have sung songs like "Anyone who Had A Heart" with the power Cilla had for sure

Oh Mary!
Cilla was good....but... MARY was incredible.
Porque no mencionaron este dueto antes. Joya, diría yo, de la musica de esa decada.
Great stuff
Wow!!
Great
She has that beautiful Irish lilt. Although I have no idea of her heritage.
Scottish female voice with charm.
Mary is from Wales...

I hardly recognize M.H. with her hair like this. I wonder what she looks like now? Will have to search to see if she still performs.
She is 69 and quite reclusive but her daughter Jessica Lee Morgan sings and performs her songs

Mary and Cilla... Can it get better than this?
Mary without Cilla?
beautiful voice GUESS what her teeth had to do with her

Mary would have been far better harmonising with the Lettermen.....wonder if she ever heard their wonderful sound?
zematis acoustic pretty rare guitar
RAISIN HELLIN

Two great singers... but, I think, not suited to sing together.
