- Our journey through the Greek islands in the Ionian Sea lasted about two weeks.
It began on the island of Corfu and concluded there as well.
Every day, we visited different islands and ports, striving to immerse ourselves in the local culture, connect with the people, savour the local cuisine, and, of course, indulge in the local wines.
I must admit that the local and most basic cuisine, consisting of fresh local vegetables and fruits, local olive oil, feta cheese, and olives, is simply delicious.
Overall, it can be said that nearly all the restaurants were fantastic, and the food was served with flavor and in generous portions.
I'd also like to mention the ice cream. It was fantastic everywhere, and our friend Marek seems to have developed a Greek ice cream addiction.
We visited places like Apollonioi, Lefkada, Preveza, Sami, Petriti, Fiskardo, and many other wonderful locations. Everywhere, we felt expected and welcomed with a smile.
Each place we stopped at was different and very interesting, but perhaps the most beautiful three places were Fiscardo, Paxos, and Kioni.
Unfortunately, I must emphasize one significant drawback of this expedition. Fishing is one of my hobbies, and I brought my own equipment along with baits. Sadly, apart from one substantial-sized tuna (which, of course, was superbly tasty), we couldn't catch anything else.
I spoke with local fishermen, and they confirm that this entire aquatic area is overfished by large trawlers, and even they struggle to catch fish. It's a shame because it also alters their way of life.
On a positive note, besides the picturesque villages and ports, we enjoyed numerous beautiful views and spent time on many gorgeous beaches whose memories will stay with us forever!
Thank you, Greece!
Thank you and farewell!
We will certainly return, and I highly recommend the Old Town of Corfu with its beautiful, character-filled streets and smiling people.
