Judging from the title , as I was watching the video I thought for sure at any second there was gonna be a deep catch with the tool breaking and shrapnel flying. Glad I was wrong. Thanks for the cool video
Thanks Frank. Glad you enjoyed it man 👍🏻
Ive turned aluminum, rass and bronze without issue. Super sharp tools, go slow, and keep the tools as cool as possible.
And pitch, and run out, and harmonics, and.....
Cool to watch tho. But surely a mini lathe could do same without making me fear for my life the entire time....
Exactly!😅
Beautiful! 💥 🇦🇺
Those metal shavings would look good in a vase or lamp. Thanks for sharing.
Can't wait to see what you do with all the shavings
You may want to use a lubricant like "cool tool" or a light tapping lubricant or maybe even good-old WD-40. It doesn't take much just a little bit to make life easier for your tools and reduce vibration. You may also want to keep the Tool rest nearer the work that will also tend to reduce vibration and give you a better finish. Have you tried mounting up an actual metal turning tool bit (or carbide insert) in a cross slide mounted to the lathe bed. You might find that it works better for "precision turning" of non ferrous metals... Most of all take care and be safe...kunk
Appreciate you sharing knowledge my friend but if it was about the most effective was of cutting metal I’d just use my metal lathe. This video was about turning metal in the way we turn wood. 👍🏻
I would never have thought too, until I saw this thumbnail....
Fascinating turn. Thanks for sharing ❤❤❤
Good job Jack beautifully made well done
Very beautiful Jack.
Absolutely totally super love this piece! The lid makes it amazing! Really really super great!!!
Another winner Jack.
Another delightful surprise!
Very pretty work - it reminds me a bit of the designs during my childhood in the 1960ies. Love the colour contrast.
Hey, those noises would be great for Halloween!
Beautiful little dish!
Well that was entertaining and really enjoyable to watch. It’s beautiful. Well done you talented incredible artistic and clever person. 😊
Great work!
Pretty! I watched Nick Zammeti's video where he turned a chunk of brass. Pretty cool!
Hmm, don’t you mean the where I turned a chunk of brass? Like a year ago?
Awesome job.
That was really interesting to watch and turned out so nice ❤from 🇦🇺
That was scary - I kept waiting for the blood. Very nice work. That top sure looks like wenge and not walnut, though.
I never wood have thought of that! (pun intended)
😁👍
I love it!
Great work. I've turned an aluminium finial before, now for a box. 😊
Very cool 😎
Cool!
Nice work👍🐝🌞
Perfect 👏👏👏👏👏👏
A lot of people claim there is no skill in turning wood using a CNC milling lathe designed for metal. Do you have one handy to prove them wrong? I've always believed that the skill is in how the woodturner applies their knowledge to what is creating the work, whether by hands using tools, or by instructions fed into a computer program.😁👍👍
I think you’ll find that people who say that will likely lack the skill to perform either i operation.
Howdy pardner😊. Say, would (wood lol) it be possible, or worth doing to turn a couple of other metals like copper and brass.... whatever might be really cool done in the same manner, but different woods too? Just a thought for a great lookin' set. Nice looking metal acorn ya got there Mr. Jack. oooooOOOOOoooooo, look 👆, shiny! Grin 😁.
COOL 😎.
Good work.
It came out nice :)))
Well Jack 🤩 I love these little trinket boxes. I've collected them for years. Interesting and one of a kind. 😍 It.. be well always good man!
There’s an idea for a future vid…add all the metal shavings into resin and turn a cool vase or bowl. 😊 Thanks for another great vid 💜🇦🇺🦘
Oh, that chatter! Like music!
Thanks 👍
That’s cool 👩🏻🏫👏🏻🥰‼️
Very nice. Something different for once👍
happy holidays
That was a cool idea, I actually thought it was going to be a pet urn at first! I know id put one of my fur babies in something like this but, much bigger.❤😊
Very Ultra Modern/ Jetson like.
I think it's pretty "Thinking Outside the Box".
Sincerely 🤠 Mr Severance,
"The Cake 🍰🎂🥳🎉 Man".
Hi Jack you are very talented and clever, you can turn your hand to many things. You always put alot of hard worrk into your pieces you make. This Metal Trinket box with a wooden lid is magnificent and unique. Well done thank you for a great video I always enjoy your videos. Take care, Merry Christmas from Amanda xx
My teeth are on edge!! Lovely article though. Prime
Next week is a sponsorship of Lethe tools 😅
Interesting! I didn’t find metal as aesthetically appealing to watch as wood turning but appreciated the skill here. The metal shavings would however be an interesting addition to incorporate into future wood projects. Maybe added to the resin!
Aluminium oxidizes and becomes looking dull gray. Dural (duraluminum) doesn't, but it's a bit harder stuff for turning.
I've had chisels bite in and sent flying when using them for their intended purpose. Can't even imagine what would.... Couldn't be good.
One thing to note: Many metals can become dangerously flammable in the form of dust, chips, or shavings. Combine that with the heat generated in turning the metal and there is fire potential. On this scale it's not a very large hazard, but not small enough to be waved off, and worth bearing in mind from a safety perspective.
(Some metals also become highly toxic when finely divided, but I kinda doubt you're going to be turning things like beryllium, lead, or uranium. 😁)
A unique treasure created by Jack. Love the different content 'spin' !!
❤❤❤❤
It is possible to polish aluminum to a chrome like finish. Quite easily actually...😅
I want to hook that lathe up to a pickup and run it through some reverb and effects. That would make for some freaky ass ambient music.
What track is that at the end? Love your work and that music...
Great video. What type of aluminium do you have, that is so easy to turn?
All metals that are softer than the steel of my gouges can be turned
With the right 'bits', can carbon steel or stainless steel be worked on a modified wood lathe?
Depends on the modifications I guess. There is a reason metal lathes are built the way they are. Are you a woodturner?
Wow!! That is cool 😎. Didn't know that could be done. Are those metal shavings sharp enough to cut you? Maybe I should hush till the video is over, maybe you will say. Have a wonderful holliday .
👍👍👍👍👍
🎉🎉🎉
Can you make a block with resin and the shavings then tuen that?
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
What are you going to do with those really cool shavings?
The heat! How are you dealing with the heat?
Great!
Are there different tools between metal and wood? I suppose that wood gauges and chisels are slightly less hard, thus less expensive than their metal counterpart?
It looks to me as though he's using both wood turning chisels and metal lathe turning tools but from what I remember from my high school metalwork classes you don't used chisels for turning wood on metal or metal lathe tools to turn wood but this video proves me wrong
OK! @@brianwebster1705
your tools were probably just crying out begging for some lubricant lmao
Ive yurned brass and aluminum. carbide cutters of course.
Now put all those filings in epoxy and turn that!!!
I wish i could try
Make steping on surface😂
Sorry
lol little did you know, you also made scotch bright pads!
This isn’t the first time turning metal on the wood lathe, there was another I recall…
Yes, I did it over a year ago with brass. 👍🏻
Goodbye tools? Wouldn't this do a number on your cutter tools?
No. Aluminium is far softer than my hss tools 👍🏻
@@JackMackWoodturning good to know! I don't know much if anything about wood turning. So, I figured using them for metal purposes could cause problems. So, I had to ask, and thanks for the reply!
I love it, and it can be a luxury weed holder😂! I swear it's a work of art, and all of my smoker friends would be fascinated! Nice work 💯
That’s its exact purpose. A Xmas gift for a friend. 👍🏻
Am picturing that phrase in manuals, "Do not attempt" 😅
Challenge accepted.
Why do you say not? It's fantastic!
Don't touch the danger streamers!
As he turns metal on his wood lathe...
😂
Is this how tinsel is made? :p
I don't thnk the problem is so much with the lathe as treating the material as if it were wood.
The problem??
@@JackMackWoodturning If you don't think it's a problem you probably shouldn't have called it "Do NOT turn metal on a wood lathe"
That’s just a disclaimer for the idiots out there who’ll blame me when a chunk of metal takes out their teeth…
If I’d called it, what’s the problem with turning metal on a wood lathe, then you comment would make sense.
Saying as I didn’t call the video that, I ask you again … the problem??
@@JackMackWoodturning The problem NOW is how aggressively defensive you have become so I will unsubscribe and you need never have anythng to do with me again. Mind how you go.
It’s working?
well, it is basically what watchmakers used, just with the wrong cutting tools and chuck. the tool rest is just a larger version of a watchmakers lathe tool rest. note that its possible to turn parts of quite high precision using a hand held cutter only.
I for one do this on my clock makers lathe semi frequently, especially when turning rounded parts for which i don't need a perfect radius and don't feel like grinding a form tool. It dose take practice to not break the tip of the cutter / chisel, as its a very fine polished point.
Try adding a bag of sand to dampen vibrations with alluminium, hanging it on your gouge>
That is called machining and there are carbide tools for that.
Holy buckets, this needs to be said?
Where's the coolant?
That makes my teeth hurt just watching it...
Forbidden tinsel.
Right you are about turning metal. Now and again I see how your lathe shakes when you are turning wood. These lathes are much too light; a metal lathe can weigh several tons.
My metal lathe weights less than my wood lathe.. the weight of the lathe doesn’t affect the performance of balanced work.
@@JackMackWoodturning I suppose your metal lathe weighs less than industrial ones :)) I meant any machine should be used to do the work it is designed for.
I find your tools amazing, they appear to be made of a very good steel.
why the hell not? you're clearly having a good go at it and I don't see you being dead or anything..
Not like this, no. This is risking your face. You mount a milling vice on your lathe, and secure the tool in the vice using the same securing blocks used on a metal lathe, so it can't slip out due to the tapered lock. Then you can easily switch between metal and wood by just removing the "custom toolpost"
Where’s the fun in that?
what wood is that? it look like wenge 🤔
It is wenge 👍🏻
ohhh i bet that was annoying to pick up
😳 а что так можно было 🤔.
Nice cocaine bowl 👍🏼😎
why "Do NOT"? Clearly it's possible
Horrific finish. Get a metal lathe if you want to turn metal
