Peaks of the Balkans Trail | Valbona to Theth, Albania

- After spending a relaxing night on Komani Lake, we made our way to Valbona for the very popular Valbona to Theth hike, a one-day trek that takes you between these two charming villages.
The hike took us around 9 hours and we enjoyed every minute of the dramatic terrain of the Accursed Mountains. The mountains are rugged and breathtakingly beautiful!
We stayed for a couple of nights in Theth and did a day hike to the beautiful and bone chilling cold, Blue Eye. We both went for a (quick) swim and it was most certainly the coldest water we have ever been in before!
This area of Albania was probably what we were most excited for in the country and it still managed to exceed all of our expectations!

Albania, who knew? Absolutely stunning scenery.
Myles, if/when we go to the Blue Eye we will keep 30 euros in our pockets, just for that taxi ride!
Hahah definitely recommend the taxi ride back!! At least during the heat of mid July!

As much as I'm happy for my fellow Americans to explore the beauty of Albanian Alps, the country I was born and grew up - yet I know the tourism will explode and I pray to God the nature doesn't get destroyed and that Albania doesn't become another tourist trap

Thanks for watching, we use Maps.me or Windy maps and download the offline version in case we don't have cell service. :)
Though I have been there twice, I still watch the videos in youtube. Each time I go back I stay longer. I will try to do a 3 week hiking stay if I manage it to go back.

So you put this up in October. But what time of year were you in Theth? My daughter is getting married in Theth in October. Will I need winter clothes or fall clothes? You guys are dressed for summer.
What month did you do this hike? Is this still possible in mid November?
We were there in July.. I do think for parts of the year it is closed due to snow.

Yes I did and it was the last ferry trip to Valbona that season. I met two other hikers from the ferry on my way to valbona but I hiked alone the next day. Valbona-Theth trail was still not covered in snow last year but it’s better to double check with the locals in Valbona. You need to check the availability of the ferry to valbona too. Other option is just to hike on Theth side only.
