    Darnold has not been in these ultra high pressure situations at any time in his career. If getting beat like this is what it takes to get adjusted to the big time games, I'd much rather have it happen in the regular season than in the playoffs.

      Excellent point & kudos for having a realistic & patient view in sports! Too many folks mistakenly believe that people are born with a certain amount of motivation, intelligence & talent, and nothing can change how much they have. This leads to the sort of reactions we see all too often, where athletes are written-off immediately after one bad game or one bad season, students are told they will never succeed in a certain subject, musicians are supposedly all washed up after a disappointing performance/album, etc., etc. Instead, the truth is that success & 'greatness' involves a ton of skill development & refinement, which requires persevering when it gets tough & learning from one's own mistakes. Tom Brady, Shohei Ohtani, Michael Jordan & Wayne Gretzky were not born with all that 'greatness' in their sport of choice, they earned it through ridiculous amounts of hard work & determination.

    *There's one thing I'd like to add re KOC & his contribution to the embarrassing play of Darnold and the Offence in general.* *I will suggest that Aaron Glenn used KOC's mindset to psychologically manipulate KOC to the Lions' advantage.* *Here's how Glen pulled it off...*
    *1.* Everyone knows that the Lions' secondary is not very good at pass coverage AND the Lions' front seven is fast & aggressive. Everyone also knows that KOC loves an aggressive pass game. So, in all likelyhood, as the week of preparation progressed, KOC decided that the best way to beat the Lions was to frequently attack their weakness with deep throws to JJ, JA, TJ, Speedy, etc.
    *2.* What Glen did was devise a game plan that suckered KOC into that game plan. By playing press coverage & a very physical man-on-man coverage, he dared KOC to call slow-developing plays that asked Darnold to hold on to the ball & wait for receivers to come open deep.
    *3* Glen also got extremely aggressive with shutting down the run & blitzing as often as needed, This enabled the Lions to destroy the Vikings' weakness on offence, namely the Vikes' weak iOL & the O-line's problems with picking up blitzes
    *4.* With KOC locked into playing 'long ball', and the Lions getting a lead in the game, KOC naturally chose to stick with his game plan, rather than adjust at half-time. To ensure this, Glen also kept on dangling the carrot (via man coverage for the rest of the game, rather than using zone more often).
    *5.* The added benefit to Glen's approach was to minimize the wear & tear on the Lions' banged-up, short-staffed front-7 by tempting KOC to give up on the run game & go for deep passes.
    *6.* I believe that this, in part, explains why
    (a) KOC/Phillips did not go to a short passing game in the second half, and
    (b) since the O-line did not get any better & KOC/Phillips stuck with their game plan, Darnold was forced to function in the same scheme in the 2nd half that he failed to execute in the first half.
    So...if I my hunch is correct...kudos to the Lions' DC, Glen, for his successful psychologically, strategically & tactically sophisticated game plan! From a Vikes fan's perspective, it sucks, but this Vikes fan will give credit where credit is due!
    Feel free to share your feedback re my 'theory'. SKOL!

    • @geeleeskolvikes
      @geeleeskolvikes 18 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Excellent analysis Derek. I would add that on the offensive side of the ball, Dan Campbell got us a couple times with everyone "knowing" his tendencies (always going for it on 4th down with the same cadence), and then he went the opposite and used that to his advantage, like the hard count that Goof got us to jump on 4th down and picked up the first.

    • @derekbaker3279
      @derekbaker3279 18 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@geeleeskolvikes Thank you! And your point & example is a good one! The Lions certainly were trying every psychological angle they could find, and they knew that when an athlete gets fatigued, he/she is prone to mental mistakes.. At that point in the game, the Vikes defence was getting worn out, so they chose the right moment. This reinforces the fact that the Lions are very good at finishing off an opponent once they get ahead.
      Whether we like it or not, Vikes fans must accept that the Lions do deserve a lot of respect....although I still believe that they can be defeated IF their opponent plays good football, and they're not a lock to make it to the Super Bowl!

      Back to the Lions, they do deserve respect. They kicked our butts and we were out coached. I agree, they are not a lock for the Super Bowl. Anyone of the remaining teams can beat them IF they play their best game. Let's hope that KOC figures it out for the Rams... and hopefully we get a third shot at them in round 2 or round 3... SKOL!!

      I agree 100% that KOC, Wes Phillips & Josh McCown have to take responsibility for their failures in that embarrassing loss. They did not devise a game plan, or make the necessary adjustments that would have put the Vikes players on offence in a position to succeed. Having said that, a lot of players on offence & special teams just did not play well.

    Darnold obviously missed some of his throws, but watching some of the replays that NBC showed from behind offense, it didn't look like our guys were even getting open half the time, making Sam hold onto the ball longer than normal. You have to score in the red zone. Getting the ball on the 7 from a turnover and coming away with 3 points…. Demoralizing for the team. Typical Vikings let down… this is going to bleed over into the rams game.

    • @derekbaker3279
      @derekbaker3279 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I agree with everything except your last point. IMHO, it is not inevitable that the poor play of the offence will 'bleed over into the Rams game'. If the coaching staff & players don't accept responsibility for the embarrassing performance of the offence & special teams, they will not learn from their mistakes & improve...and that will make it more likely that the Vikes will suck again when they play the Rams. However, one thing that brought about 14 wins this year is the fact that the coaches & players DO learn from their mistakes, so I am optimistic they will learn from Sunday night's debacle.

    Our defense held up well considering what they had to carry I thought. Detroit would have dropped 50 on a bad defense if their offense was doing the shit we were doing. We have to hold our own so that the defense isn't spending the entire game doing everything, and then finally the Lions just bust it open and we can't answer. That is dejecting for ANYBODY, even the strongest people. We figure out what the Lions were doing, we can beat them. We have to be able to hit them in the face offensively. Our defense hit the Lions' offense in the face plenty of times, but our offense looked WEAK.

      EXCELLENT points Steve! I have watched NFL football for 50+ years, and it is true that there always has been a lot of bias/intentional incompetence among some officiating crews. Furthermore, just as you described, NFL officiating crews generally prefer to influence games by what they do not call, rather than what they choose to call. BTW, this was totally the case in the NHL too (*), although IMHO refs in the NHL are no longer as biased as they used to be & with two refs, more infractions behind the play do get caught.
      (*) for years & years, clutching, grabbing, bullying, plus constantly breaking the rules and daring the refs to call all infractions, etc., etc. were all intentional strategies employed the Philadelphia Flyers, Boston Bruins & some other teams which did not have a lot of skill on their roster...and unfortunately they did get away with it.

When it comes to the iOL, I believe that if Darnold had been given good pass protection last night, he would have gotten his head screwed on straight and returned to the level of play we have seen from him in most games this year. IMHO, the absolute priority for Kwesi A-M during the draft & the free agency period is to really upgrade the talent for the iOL...a minimum of two studs for C and LG (or move Risner back to LG & find a stud for RG)

    This is why you trade JJ or Darnold. They need a top CB. Try to get Travis Hunter.

      According to Andy, there are some really good free agents available for the positions that Kwesi A-M desperately needs to upgrade, AND there will be enough cap space, even if we bring Darnold back. So, there should be the money to find two free agent studs for the iOL, a free agent stud for the iDL, and a free agent stud for CB. Then Kwesi A-M can supplement our depth with a few good draft picks.

    Lions fans are getting disrespectful, during the moment of silence for the New Orleans tragedy before the start of the game they were getting rowdy and I heard a "Vikings Suck" from the crowd on live TV. No class

      They played all their back-up players. Very few starters were on the field in that game (which I am sure really p*ssed-off the Bengals, who were hoping the Chiefs would win!)
