I literally cried for 20 minutes straight during and after the chapter. Mind you Im a big dude in the military with a wife and kid. This backstory is killing me.
One thing I'd never thought would get an explanation is Bonney's piercing and her pirate-name, just such a small detail I'd never really look at it as something important. The rock that is forming on the cheek of Bonney at this time is in the same place where she has a ring-piercing and to make her feel better, Kuma refers to it as JEWELRY which is the name she gives herself as a pirate, Jewelry Bonney.
If oda didn't say the chapter was unfinished I would've thought that it was a creative choice, and and awesome one at that. I think it really captures Kuma's mental degradation and mood incredibly. Oda is the goat even when he pushes out an "incomplete chapter"
Not since Robin's flashback have I cried this much in One Piece. I believe Kuma's death is inevitable at this point, but I hope he gets to see Nika before he dies and I hope we take Bonney with us and let her rain hell upon the World Government. PS. I thought it was really cute that Bonney has her piercing now where she used to have the stones her illness gave her. Still Jewelry Bonney, like her dad used to call it.
This was one of the roughest chapter reads in a good while. I think the imagery works because it starts to degrade around the same part as Kuma's world is crumbling as well. This is definitely the lowest point in his life in my opinion because when he'd finally found his place in the world and a life he was happy with, it was all taken from him. Also easily the most explicit Oda has ever been with Celestial Dragon fuckery. It was implied before, but there's literally zero hope to interpret this in another light. Either way, it's interesting to note that apparently, some celestial dragons carry a disease that makes them weak to sunlight, the sun often being the representation of freedom in this series and the "dawn" of the world being one of our ultimate goals.
The more visible line work almost adds to the dream-like quality of the back story, as though we're viewing these memories as if they were worn VHS tapes. It adds a distance from this story, as though it is too painful to relive what has happened, even from a third-person perspective
It certainly explains why the Marine's are so reserved with her, not only is she actually a child but she's also a celestial dragon. (Or at least half one, I'm not sure how the celestial dragons regard children they have with commoner wives.) I feel like I should have seen this coming considering how um... most of Big Mom's children were conceived, but damn...
I think it was on a lotta people's mind when the kidnapped thing came in but nobody wanted to entertain the thought of Oda actually pulling through with such a storyline
it gets even worse when you add in oda's forshadowing, kumas always asking "if you would go on a trip, where would you go" before sending them & bonny stopping zoro from killing the celestial when he was taking that women to be his wife in sabody, it just makes this hit so much harder! swear the more we learn, every re-read of one piece just hits that much harder, bravo my good sir, bravo!
Btw one of the most painful experiences one can have is coming into contact with the gympie gympie plant, which is (of course) native to Australia. It has also been dubbed the s**cide plant due to inflicting such a harsh pain that people would rather end themselves than continue suffering from it. There even has been a person accidentally using it as toilet paper, and in short, he couldn't stand it. So that would be my recommended way of treating a regular Celestial Dragon.
The Celestial Dragons are so sick they probably forcefully infected Ginny as a failsafe incase she escaped. She probably spent those 2 years locked inside of a dungeon
This chapter was so utterly gut wrenching. So many little things dropped in like how Bonney got her 'Jewelery' moniker, why Kuma asks where you'd want to take a trip, the Bible he carries is the book Bonney read about sky islands. But Ginny's Death is simply not something I'll be getting over anytime soon.
To make it even worse, according to the timeline, the current day Bonney that we last saw getting wrecked on Egghead... is 12 years old. The 320 million berry bounty member of the Supernovas, who is fighting for her life against a Gorosei, is a twelve year old child. Let that sink in. And then throw it at the CDs.
I read a single line of a twitter spoiler the day before, so I knew my darkest fears from last week were on point, so I started the chapter already on the verge, and then broke 2 pages in. could not stop sobbing for half an hour, struggling to continue reading on. 6h laters and I still shatter very quickly just thinking about this chapter, or even recontextualizing the chapters before, or Kuma and Bonney appearances from pre- and post-timeskip. I am wreck. the unfinished art really worked amazingly well, making it even more destructive. and yes, a lot before was more vague, implicit (dark and obvious, but implicit) but this is unmistakebly explicit. oh, I have an idea, skinned alive, and carefully chopping pieces off of them and force feeding it to them. (no, that is not from me, but the skinning alive part reminded me of Rammsteins Mein Teil, which in turn is inspired by the Cannibal of Rothenburg)
I also cried, genuinely during this. Kuma's childhood with his parents dying had me tearing up but this actually got me sobbing. So many theories on whether or not Bonney was a clone of Ginny, or if she was born off screen, but to know that Oda took the darkest route, and had Ginny be, ehm, non-consensually impregnated. Just holy shit. Makes it all the more tragic, but the fact that Bonney was adopted by Kuma plays into the found family theme all the better. I think this is the best chapter of the timeskip.
I want to add, just to make the Celestial Dragons worse. They may have infected Ginny on purpose. Like, make their "wife" into a living jewel by exposing her to a dangerous disease and when she is genuinely damaged by it, just toss her aside like a used toy? That sounds like Celestial Dragon behavior to me

Remember Kuma sent himself away from Mary Geoise some chapters back after Akainu took off his leg and half his face (sans white beard). Oda is going demon mode on the feelings and I can see Kuma teleporting to Egghead, absorbing his memory bubble that vegapunk has kept and regaining his humanity for just a few minutes. One leg, half a face.. he smiles weakly at Bonney and uses the last of his strength to do the Nika dance his father did for him when he cried….. Bonney sobbing as Kuma uses the last of his life force to send Bonney and everyone away on the Sunny towards Elbaf as he gets finished off by Saturn.
The nika dance would absolutely ruin people. Oda loves to surgically destroy our hearts and souls with the feels 😭 Also it would be the perfect inversion to Sabaody because last time Kuma sent the entire crew separate ways until they were strong enough to stand a chance. The inversion being they are strong enough to fight the WG now and sending them away to elbaf on the Sunny but this time they’re all TOGETHER! It’d be a perfect ending to egghead where it’s not technically a loss but still a tragedy.
When you spoke about Bonney thinking she would be free to explore the world at age 10, you made me realize that she was a rookie pre-time skip at age 10. Also it recontextualizes when she stopped Zoro from killing the celestial dragon on Sabaody and transforms into a child that we might have actually seen her true form right there. She essentially fulfilled this “plan” to get out there and see the world when she turns 10.
Oh the trauma will stop when he hears the drums of liberation at egghead and see the sun god kick Saturn’s hind so hard that he crosses escape velocity and gets launched towards the sun and dies while his whole body burns and melts 🤬

i feel you, i was so mad at work reading the chapter people thought i was possessed or something, people were wondering why the hell i was crying kuma went from me not caring about him at all to him being my second favorite character in just a few chapters, this is easily the most emotional backstory
I honestly wasn't invested enough in Ace as a Character, Marineford to me had the most impact through Luffys perspective of consequent loss and trauma. Kumas Flashback just hit different. (maybe also cause marineford has been such a long time ago)@@booksandtropes
i would like to theorize that Bonney's illness has something to do with her fruit just like Law. I think with her fruit she can change to her future self that has not that disease. And it all will somehow connected to Vegapunk. Maybe Kuma become Warlord in exchange for curing Bonney's illness by meeting Vegapunk

I have read the chapter probably like 10 times already. I have yet to make it past the panel of Kuma trembling while holding Ginny's lifeless body without at least one tear streaking down my face.
Its just adorable that the moment she started ranting about her plans of murder and destruction that the Cat decided to perch on her lap. Either because it sensed her distress or sensed the killing intent and wanted in on the fun... you never know with cats.
Something I thought after this chapter Re: Saturn saying Bonney is just a child. He likely only cares that she's a child because she's half Tenryubito... The Celestial Dragons and Five Elders have not shown particular restraint for children in their massacres and slavery...as if you needed more reason to hate them.

I saw a comment on Twitter that broke my fucking heart but when Ginny called Kuma and the Revs, she did not ONCE mention Bonney or even having a child. She loved Kuma so much, she didnt want to tell him that she had a child with another man, even if it was because of the worst circumstances, so she just wanted to tell him she loves him and only him. Like she feels guilty. I am revoking Oda's Kuma privileges.

Poor Kumachi and Ginny did nothing to deserve any of this. In chapter 1084 pag 2 Sabo says to Bonney about how he heard Kuma has a daughter, what if Kuma told Sabo about her. Reading that again made me cry just like this chapter.
Oda apologizes for not being up to his own standards. And I get it, yes, the lines aren't as crisp as we're used to. But heck, if there were any places in the entire manga to put rough edges, it was a few of these scenes. Kuma engorging himself in war without Ginny and not looking quite whole just fit.
What I need from Kuma right now is to fly in and extract all of the emotional and physical pain he has endured throughout his life and shove it right into Saturn's piehole to save his dear Bonney. Forcing one of the Five Elders to feel what they've put others through. That would catapult him to favorite character number 1 in an instant.
This chapter was absolutely heart-wrenching. Makes me wonder if the lack of detail in the panels was because Oda just could not finish such a sad, sad chapter about a character we all love while crying 24/7. Oda is a father too right? 1098 is a chapter that really invokes the heart of what humanity is, and elevates Kuma to the divine saint he has always been. Also seems suspiciously coordinated that its released right after we're all still crying from the end of AoT. Talk about a harsh start to the month, the holidays won't save us from our tears at this peak.
Im in tears every week cuz of this backstory. Ive had kuma as my favorite character for so long and its just fulfilling having his life be shown even if im broken emotionally reading it. I really cant wait for chapter 1100 knowing Oda its probably the end of the flashback and a big reveal or when kuma will land on egghead and disaster happens.

When Kuma’s g flash backs chapters gets animated I am seriously going to have a whole mental breakdown 😭 I was really crying a bucket of tears when I knew that he was actually protecting Luffy’s crew and thousands sunny.
There is plenty of manga that have great villians but One Piece is the only one (that I've read) that evokes rage in me and makes to want to hurt fictional characters.

Why is it the more I reread this chapter and watch people react/review it that I tear up? I don't think I'm emotionally prepared for when the anime gets to this chapter.
I kind of think Oda is going to make Saturn the father, tying Egghead to the flashback even more. I don't know if I have a "every celestial dragon needs to be burned alive" sense, but more "I hope Kuma extracts all of his own pain and Saturn gets thrown into the pain bubble" sense. If Saturn is the one who did that to Ginney. He's definitely related in some way to this entire tragedy. His fruit power / animal is based on a creature known to cause uncurable diseases. Kuma likely (in my opinion) extracted the disease and became a robot over time as his body started being destroyed by the sun.
I thought the heavy use of lines and pencil like shading was an artistic choice. Every time Kuma's world was falling apart felt so much heavier with the art being like this.
Something I saw pointed out was the sun pattern in the Cross at Kuma’s church has a very similar pattern to the Kozuki crest and the Sky Islamd symbol.

By the time the actual chapter came out, I was already caught up with all of the spoilers, the full summery and all of the raws. Reading the chapter proper STILL brought tears to my eyes. Just thinking about it as I'm typing this now is making my chest quiver like I'm at the beginning of a breakdown.
Oda's ability to make you love a character and hate another with all your guts is lowkey kind of scary. This remind me of Fisher Tiger and his deep hate for human after being enslaved by CD. I think I would choose dead too over accepting CD's blood.

It's like Kuma was built just to take the full blunt of one piece trauma. I didn't expect a life full of unending tragedy. It's usually just the childhood. Didn't even mention how he's had to suck up to the government only to be turned sacrificed and turned cyborg losing his willpower.
I slightly disagree. Unlike Robin, who suffered throughout her whole life from Ohara's downfall until she met the Strawhats, Kuma at least had longer periods of happiness in between and found allies to support him early on.
I think those are valid points absoluetly. But I also think Kuma lost consistently more and more as time went on. When you spoke about Bonney thinking she would be free to explore the world at age 10, you made me realize that she was a rookie pre-time skip at age 10. Also it recontextualizes when she stopped Zoro from killing the celestial dragon on Sabaody and transforms into a child that we might have actually seen her true form right there. She essentially fulfilled this “plan” to get out there and see the world when she turns 10.
Oh the trauma will stop when he hears the drums of liberation at egghead and see the sun god kick Saturn’s hind so hard that he crosses escape velocity and gets launched towards the sun and dies while his whole body burns and melts 🤬
I think the biggest character thing about Ginny in this chapter is her love for her child truly unconditional love for Bonney

Someone brought up the reason why the Celestial Dragons are wearing their suits is because of the Saphire Scale disease they have in their blood line.

kuma went from me not caring about him at all to him being my second favorite character in just a few chapters, this is easily the most emotional backstory

i would like to theorize that Bonney's illness has something to do with her fruit just like Law. I think with her fruit she can change to her future self that has not that disease. And it all will somehow connected to Vegapunk. Maybe Kuma become Warlord in exchange for curing Bonney's illness by meeting Vegapunk

I have read the chapter probably like 10 times already. I have yet to make it past the panel of Kuma trembling while holding Ginny's lifeless body without at least one tear streaking down my face.
Its just adorable that the moment she started ranting about her plans of murder and destruction that the Cat decided to perch on her lap. Either because it sensed her distress or sensed the killing intent and wanted in on the fun... you never know with cats.
Something I thought after this chapter Re: Saturn saying Bonney is just a child. He likely only cares that she's a child because she's half Tenryubito... The Celestial Dragons and Five Elders have not shown particular restraint for children in their massacres and slavery...as if you needed more reason to hate them.

I saw a comment on Twitter that broke my fucking heart but when Ginny called Kuma and the Revs, she did not ONCE mention Bonney or even having a child. She loved Kuma so much, she didnt want to tell him that she had a child with another man, even if it was because of the worst circumstances, so she just wanted to tell him she loves him and only him. Like she feels guilty. I am revoking Oda's Kuma privileges.

Poor Kumachi and Ginny did nothing to deserve any of this. In chapter 1084 pag 2 Sabo says to Bonney about how he heard Kuma has a daughter, what if Kuma told Sabo about her. Reading that again made me cry just like this chapter.
Kuma did tell Dragon and others about her, so its quite possible that Sabo just learned from them

Oda apologizes for not being up to his own standards. And I get it, yes, the lines aren't as crisp as we're used to. But heck, if there were any places in the entire manga to put rough edges, it was a few of these scenes. Kuma engorging himself in war without Ginny and not looking quite whole just fit.
What I need from Kuma right now is to fly in and extract all of the emotional and physical pain he has endured throughout his life and shove it right into Saturn's piehole to save his dear Bonney. Forcing one of the Five Elders to feel what they've put others through. That would catapult him to favorite character number 1 in an instant.
This chapter was absolutely heart-wrenching. Makes me wonder if the lack of detail in the panels was because Oda just could not finish such a sad, sad chapter about a character we all love while crying 24/7. Oda is a father too right?
1098 is a chapter that really invokes the heart of what humanity is, and elevates Kuma to the divine saint he has always been. Also seems suspiciously coordinated that its released right after we're all still crying from the end of AoT.
Talk about a harsh start to the month, the holidays won't save us from our tears at this peak.
Im in tears every week cuz of this backstory. Ive had kuma as my favorite character for so long and its just fulfilling having his life be shown even if im broken emotionally reading it. I really cant wait for chapter 1100 knowing Oda its probably the end of the flashback and a big reveal or when kuma will land on egghead and disaster happens.

Yes Oda broke our heart again.😢💔 And I already hated the celestial dragons but I hate them so much more then I already did. I agree with you they do need to die all a slow painfull death. And the kids need to get educated on how to treat people and do better then their parents.

I kind of think Oda is going to make Saturn the father, tying Egghead to the flashback even more.
I don't know if I have a "every celestial dragon needs to be burned alive" sense, but more "I hope Kuma extracts all of his own pain and Saturn gets thrown into the pain bubble" sense.
If Saturn is the one who did that to Ginney. He's definitely related in some way to this entire tragedy. His fruit power / animal is based on a creature known to cause uncurable diseases.
Kuma likely (in my opinion) extracted the disease and became a robot over time as his body started being destroyed by the sun.
I thought the heavy use of lines and pencil like shading was an artistic choice. Every time Kuma's world was falling apart felt so much heavier with the art being like this.
Something I saw pointed out was the sun pattern in the Cross at Kuma’s church has a very similar pattern to the Kozuki crest and the Sky Islamd symbol.

By the time the actual chapter came out, I was already caught up with all of the spoilers, the full summery and all of the raws.
Reading the chapter proper STILL brought tears to my eyes. Just thinking about it as I'm typing this now is making my chest quiver like I'm at the beginning of a breakdown.
Oda's ability to make you love a character and hate another with all your guts is lowkey kind of scary. This remind me of Fisher Tiger and his deep hate for human after being enslaved by CD. I think I would choose dead too over accepting CD's blood.

It's like Kuma was built just to take the full blunt of one piece trauma. I didn't expect a life full of unending tragedy. It's usually just the childhood. Didn't even mention how he's had to suck up to the government only to be turned sacrificed and turned cyborg losing his willpower.

I slightly disagree. Unlike Robin, who suffered throughout her whole life from Ohara's downfall until she met the Strawhats, Kuma at least had longer periods of happiness in between and found allies to support him early on.
I think those are valid points absoluetly. But I also think Kuma lost consistently more and more as time went on. From his parents, to the love of his life, then his pacifism, then almost Bonney herself. And I expect we will be shown that he will have to give up his own humanity to keep Bonney.@@TEG13
