      You may find in life that these things are never so simple. Guilt is a pain that one can never escape wether it is true or not. In truth we cannot cast judgment for we can not see into her heart nor his. Only she can know.

    5-19-20 on my birthday I lost an amazing person to cancer. A guy that made a huge impact on my life for the better. Looked up to him like family. Used to fly a plane to Nantucket island every morning, & night, and worked with him every day. He was my mentor. After work we would drive back to the plane jamming to this song. He would catch a ride with me back to his house after landing, we would smoke a fat doobie and play music in his studio.. This was our song. Listening to this now brings tears of joy, and precious memories we shared. He was one of the best people I knew. And he was so musically talented. Never forget.
    RIP ARTY THE ONE MAN PARTY.

    When I was young I knew everything
    And she, a punk who rarely ever took advice
    Now I'm guilt-stricken, sobbin' with my head on the floor
    Stopped a baby's breath and a shoe full of rice, no
    Can't be held responsible
    She was touchin' her face
    I won't be held responsible
    She fell in love in the first place
    For the life of me
    I can not remember
    What made us think that we were wise and we'd never compromise
    For the life of me
    I can not believe we'd ever die
    For these sins
    We were merely freshmen
    My best friend took a week's vacation to forget her
    His girl took a week's worth of valium and slept
    And now he's guilt-stricken, sobbin'
    With his head on the floor
    Thinks about her now and how he never really wept he said
    Can't be held responsible
    She was touchin' her face
    I won't be held responsible
    She fell in love in the first place
    For the life of me

    What made us think that we were wise and we'd never compromise
    For the life of me
    I can not believe we'd ever die
    For these sins
    We were merely freshmen
    We tried to wash our hands of all of this
    We'd never talk of our lacking relationships
    And how we're guilt-stricken sobbin' with our heads on the floor
    We fell through the ice when we tried not to slip we'd say
    Can't be held responsible
    She was touchin' her face
    I won't be held responsible
    She fell in love in the first place
    For the life of me
    I can not remember

  • @andrianblangit
    @andrianblangit 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    In 2001, Brian Vander Ark explained what the song means to him:
    "When I was young I knew everything" - We all think we know everything at a young age. I thought I did. I realize I didn't know sh*t until I was 36.
    "And she, a Punk who rarely took advice" - How many people do we know like that?
    "Now I'm guilt-stricken, sobbing, with my head on the floor" - Something happened that caused this reaction, but I wouldn't want to give that away this early in the song, so let's throw in an some ambiguity:
    "Stop a baby's breath, and a shoe full of rice, no" - First of all, forget the NO. Stop a baby's breath is just that. Abort the baby. A shoe full of rice is a result of a wedding. So - stop a baby's breath AND then you stop a wedding. She's pregnant, get her to abort, and then there's no wedding. And you know what?
    "I can't be held responsible, cause she was touching her face" - When I wrote this song, The Divinyls had a song out called 'I Touch Myself.' The TV was on, she was touching her face in the video. Very sexy. So, I can't be held responsible because she was trying to be sexy, trying to seduce me, etc.
    "I won't be held responsible, she fell in love in the first place" - I didn't tell her to fall in love.
    "For the life of me, I cannot remember what made us think that we were wise, and we'd never compromise" - What was I thinking back then? Who am I to put a girl though that? Why was I unable to compromise? Guilty feelings.
    "For the life of me, I cannot believe we'd ever die for these sins, we were merely freshmen" - We were just kids, let it go, we all make mistakes, etc.
    "My best friend took a week's vacation to forget her" - He needed to get away because of what happened.
    "His girl took a week's worth of Valium and slept" - This is why this song is not that strong literally - it's confusing. HIS girl is MY girl. The same girl that had the abortion has now killed herself.
    "Now he's guilt-stricken, sobbing with his head on the floor, thinks about her now and how he never really wept he says" - He has the same guilty feelings that I do about the abortion and death.
    "We tried to wash our hands of all of this, we never talk of our lacking relationships" - We rarely spoke after the incident - we just tried to forget it. We never spoke of her or the fact that we can't have a decent relationship with anyone since then.
    "We fell through the ice when we tried not to slip" - No matter how careful you might be, there are other perils out there.
    The girl is real, the abortion is real. The death is not. It's poetic license to make the story more interesting.

    As a child I use to fall asleep in the summer with the clock radio on. One morning, I had a dream that I was in the bathroom of my elementary school(which I was still attending at the time) and was being attacked by bullies and other, nondescript, mean people with pots and pans of all things. loI. Suddenly I noticed a pool of water, and jumped into it to escape them. As soon as I splashed into the water, a cool, soothing feeling came over me and this song, The Freshmen, started(On the radio and in my dream).
    The beginning coincided perfectly with me hitting the water. Underwater I had no trouble breathing, and as the song played I explored what I realised was the Simpsons' (Matt Groening's) house, flooded. There were sharks swimming around in circles so I had to avoid them, like it was a video game.
    Despite the sharks (which were easy to avoid) it was a very peaceful feeling dream, with this song playing in the background. Ever since, I have always liked this song. My advice to you all out there is to leave your radio on when you go to sleep, because it will compliment your dreams in beautiful ways.

    @nabs005 Actually if you listen to the lyrics, "Stopping baby's breath, and a shoe full of rice.." it's about the guy not wanting to get married and therefore wanting the girl to get an abortion.
    He even begs off responsibility with the line, "Can't be held responsible she was touching her face" she seduced him, and, "Can't be held responsible, she fell in love in the first place". The whole relationship was unwanted.

      As a woman, I'd say she was ultimately responsible for her own body but for him to not take any responsibility for their relationship is absolutely wrong and unacceptable. This whole song to me is him trying to bury his own guilt.

    "Shoe of rice fell" is the correct lyrics

    • @IAmFromTheTop
      @IAmFromTheTop 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    • @judyfisher67
      @judyfisher67 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@IAmFromTheTop Thank you for that explanation. I have goosebumps all over. I never knew thats what those lyrics meant. The rice part I assumed something about a wedding but the baby's breath I thought he was talking about the flower. Which is used a lot in weddings. 😪

    • @blueblank8287
      @blueblank8287 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s probably a deliberate double meaning - choosing “baby’s breath” because the wording also fits with the wedding imagery.
