    I already knew most of this but what surprised me is using hair spray as fixative!! Also, you did say you could colour over the hairspray which is pretty interesting....I will have to give this a try. Thank you and I have all but one of your books and I love them!

    This is a big help. I love colouring since I was a child but only now do I start really learning about this stuff. I also didn't know what I would do for backgrounds. I'm finding it hard to color in the background using pencils so the technique using chalk pastels are a great help! thank you so much! Hope you make more videos about coloring techniques. :)

    I just love to color in your books Johanna...they´re a delight...and so are you...I already knew all these terms but just enjoy to watch you talking! but...I thought monochrome means just using one color with all its tones, tints and shades..? :) Thank you! :)

    You should, if you know how to, add a correction text to the spot where you say that a monochromatic scheme is black and white. That is incorrect. Monochromatic means that the palette is composed of 1 single color, in different tones. It can be, for example, an entirely blue color palette, but with a sky blue, a navy blue, a sapphire blue and a cobalt blue.

      But black and white is still recognised as a monochromatic colour scheme even though technically there isn't a base 'colour' being altered by the addition of black or white.

    I'm just coming to the end of the skull picture in Lost Ocean and the pastel effect would have been fab for the background. Oh well, I really enjoy watching your videos though, they're very informative and easy watching. Thank you! 😊

      +Sarah Addicott You can still use pastels for the background by very carefully covering your colored portions before putting down and moving about the pastel. Just be thorough with covering the part you don't want pastel dust on :)

      +papersteven thanks for that. I decided to use pencil crayons just because I thought I'd done it in the wrong order but I appreciate the advice :)

    Thank you for these tips. So nice to have them layed out in short videos. Is it absolutely necessary to use a fixative for chalk pastel backgrounds? If you lay a sheet of waxed paper or parchment paper over it when finished , would it keep from smudging or transferring onto the facing page or do you need the fixative to prevent smudging during coloring?

    Can using hairspray be used as a protector on the JB canvasses? Unfortunately because of my lungs it was an ordeal to complete the canvass due to the fumes from the pens (Alcohol based). I am having to give away the pens despite the expense of buying them as I won't be able to do any more. I don't want to fork out £5-8s on the official UV fixative spray just to use the once.

    may i ask the difference between chalk and soft pastels?

    • @ellabougher3226
      @ellabougher3226 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ming Xin Jian Xing Chalk pastel is basically like a stick of chalk, just more pigmented. A soft pastel or oil pastel is like a waxy crayon with lots of pigment. Oil pastels are VERY thick and can be pretty messy.
