Fratres is a composition by the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, existing in versions for a wide variety of instrumentations and exemplifying Pärt's tintinnabuli style of composition. Structurally, the piece consists of a set of eight or nine chord sequences, separated by a recurring percussion motif. The chord sequences themselves follow a clear pattern, and while the progressing chords explore a rich harmonic space, they nevertheless appear to have been generated by means of a simple formula.[2]
The first version for string quintet and wind quintet (early music ensemble) was written by Pärt in 1977. Further versions were written over the years leading up to about 1992.
Several versions of the piece exist, some of which are listed below. Each version typically has a duration of seven to twelve minutes in performance. Fratres exists perhaps most prominently in its versions for violin, string orchestra, and percussion and for violin and piano. Similarity to these versions of the others varies: for instance, the versions for viola and piano, or cello and piano are almost exactly the same as that for violin, whereas the version for string quartet is more similar to the cello version.
    The versions include:
    Strings and percussion
    Violin, strings and percussion
    String quartet
    Cello and piano
    Four, eight, twelve... cellos
    Wind octet and percussion
    String quintet
    Wind quintet
    Violin and piano
    Viola and Piano
    Saxophone Quartet
    Guitar, string orchestra and percussion
A performance by the Hungarian State Opera Orchestra conducted by Tamás Benedek, recorded in 1997, was used in the six-part BBC documentary Auschwitz: The Nazis and the 'Final Solution' produced by Laurence Rees in 2005. Another version was featured in the 2007 film There Will Be Blood directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, the 2013 film The Place Beyond the Pines directed by Derek Cianfrance and the teaser trailer for the upcoming 2013 film A Single Shot, starring Sam Rockwell.
Jazz pianist Aaron Parks incorporated elements of Fratres into his composition "Harvesting Dance," heard on his album Invisible Cinema and on Terence Blanchard's album Flow.

My favourite interpretation of this piece. My goodness, it gives me something that I cannot explain. I feel like... underwater.

I love this version! It's a little more "frantic" than some but I think this suits the piece. Excellent!

Meant with the most humble respect: When our bodies decay and disappear this music in the hands of the next master will sing as true as you make it here. This is where this music takes me and feels like it expresses itself.

My string ensemble performed the orchestral version of this piece. As I researched it, I found that the piece has a deep spiritual significance, influenced by Part's Orthodox Christian faith. The meaning of the title, "Fratres" is "brotherhood", similar to a name for a group of monks. The repeating pizzicato sections are reminiscent of the bells which call the brotherhood to prayer. Although the string version is so very different in sound from the violin/piano version, the harmonic progression is the same, making a complete cycle to rest in the same place that it started from. The meaning can be so personal to the performer and listener! The violin part to me sounds like a cry from the depths of one's heart, perhaps in prayer.

The repeating double stops section is heart wrenching and full of longing

Call me crazy but I'd much rather watch a straight performance without all the scenery and special effects. As nice as they are, I think music like this can and should speak for itself.

    • @eaviles1993
      @eaviles1993 8 ปีที่แล้ว

+Shunarjuna I second that; though I appreciate a show when it comes to other genres of music perhaps, for music like this, I prefer to be captivated fully by the sound, whereas visual stimuli is nice too, but in this case it diverts attention from what's truly enthralling here.

Agree, absolutely. This is visually so overdone... the visual interpretation does not add here, it rather takes something away from Part's music....

I guess both types of video performance are valid and necessary in today's. It's needed different eyesight to enjoy these artistic interpretation.

This is like listening to a prayer. One minute it's a fervent anguished cry... and then God's calm response. Then the turmoil boils up again... and billows around like a wind.... and then it is calmed.

Liked the version very much. And contrary to what some have said below, the visual do add something different. In my opinion. I am sooo tired of all those boring performances, always the same, always dressed the same, same environment. Elitist. This IS different and it was intended to be different. I particularly liked the effect of the image of the water mixing with that of the floor.
