  • They wanted to call me 'Jonah' and throw me overboard. Everything that could go wrong did on the day I rode with John and Richard in 3488. In fact it even cost me a video camera...

Wow, good footage. The shiny dials and piping just shows you the pride of these railway men. 👌 a lost generation and a heritage that would have been so good for tourism.

I photographed some steam trains at a place in the Karoo one Eastertime. About 1983 . The station was Kraankuil. Fantastic locos and long trains sometime double headed.. Ahh , Johnny Gilberthorpe, We were fortunate to meet and get to know this lovely chap back in the UK about the mid 2000''s and became good friends with him and his lovely wife here in UK. What an interesting entertaining man , what a life story... In today's Britain everyone on TV or in the news is a so called celebrity.. (many are non entities in my opinion) But here was a man with a real story to tell and our opinion was a celebrity , a. sadly departed to 'that great loco shed in the sky' 2.5 yrs ago.. RIP John.

How did things go wrong? Everything seemed to be going good until you dropped your camera!

I can't hear well: Were the train crew speaking in English or Afrikaans? I would expect the latter was used more but the former with this train crew!
