It also implies that the sandworms need water to mature which is also raises a couple of possible problems.
there's plenty of water in the ecosystem as a whole - but almost ALL of it at any one time is trapped inside of the sand trout. Yes, they do need water to mature - sand trout soak it up almost instantly.
It is implied in the first book that water is incredibly rare on the planet surface but exists in pockets below the surface that only the worms could access and the often borders the Fremen caves. More importantly, the character Duncan Idaho comes to the conclusion that the worms are not actually native to Dune, in their native planet they would never grow bigger than the Sand Plankton but on Dune they can become the monsters we see them as, hence the animal terraforming the planet. But yes, it is incredibly rare and there will be no more spice once the worms use up the water, the Spice was a metaphor for oil in the Middle East and how countries fight wars over a resource that will eventually disappear
This is not accurate. Dune describes plants and birds, mice, even small game. It does describe a dish the fremen give paul that is some native bird drenched in spice and wrapped in a plant leaf. There is water on arrakis but most of it is trapped in the small polar capped reigons.
Sorry but you missed the point. Dune does have water, plants and animals - all are just uniquely desert adopted. It’s actually explained in the book about the planet ecology in detail.
