This is exactly the kind of content I've been hoping to find as I prepare to start grad school next semester. Your eloquence shows that you clearly know what you are talking about on a deep level much like 3b1b and the like. Thank you for championing intuition focused content. It is often overlooked but it is an important complement to rigorous study. I can't wait for more!

I like the visual and auditory style of the video. The handwritten look of it is particularly nice, and I like the combination of scribbles and traditional animation. It's a nice contrast to the dozens of other maths channels which have a much more formal and computerized look, which can sometimes feel alienating.

15:17 So the key is "What is the indexing set A. It is an undefined object. I.e. it is _induced_ by the topology you choose. It could be any set of ordinals, for example. So a toplogy on any set X defines a set A of ordinals? Are they "ordinals induced by X"?

I think your visual introduction is terrific! However, at 5 min you have a jump discontinuity in your visual presentation where you introduce the text-based, formal, technical definitions of open sets and continuous functions (which is also beautiful). Just a suggestion, but perhaps, instead of describing these definitions as "unintuitive" and immediately putting off the reader on the technical description, you might say that these definitions can also be introduced in a more visually intuitive and satisfy way (as certainly can be done), which you will do at later time.

Actually homology is one of those subjects that when I first studied I was like: "Well, that's exactly how I would have done it".
Then there are always mathematical details to be fixed, but the idea behind mathematics are always intuitive for me; less so is physics.

    • @k_meleon

I think it's because mathematics are in some sense made to feel beautiful, and their formalization is done by men for men. Consequently, mathematics often appear elegant. On the other hand, physics are mostly discovered, which is the reason why they sometimes feel so arbitrary and obscure.

To me the most beautiful thing is the precisely the interplay of mathematics and physics. I like how the sweetest bits of maths have a way of coming around at the most unexpected of places in nature and physics. Like this very topic: I vividly recall the way our former Algebraic Topology prof. turned up all excited one lecture in 2016 just after the Nobel prize had been awarded telling us that she was still abuzz because she never thought she'd live to see the day her studies would apply to "the actual world out there"! :D

The problem is that a classification of all topological spaces would include a classification of any subset of topological spaces - and one type of topological space, namely 4-manifolds, has been shown to be unclassifiable, because a classification would solve a problem in algebra that is known to be unsolvable. So you've got algebra (specifically groups and coordinate rings) on one side, geometry dual to it on the other, analysis to break it all down into points and numbers, and topology as its "synthetic" complement that patches it all together? (also synthetically in the sense of being invariant to charts and triangulations.) Homology is dual to co-homology.
Continuous (topology) is dual to discrete (quantum).
      Homotopic equivalence = duality.
Points are dual to lines -- the principle of duality in geometry.
Null homotopic implies contraction to a point where as non null homotopic requires at least two points (a line) or duality.
The big bang is a Janus hole/point (two faces = duality) -- Julian Barbour, physicist.
Topological holes cannot be shrunk down to zero.
      Union is dual to intersection.
Injective is dual to surjective synthesizes bi-jective or isomorphism.
Convex (convergence, syntropy) is dual to concave (divergence, entropy).
Syntropy (prediction, projection) is dual to increasing entropy -- the 4th law of thermodynamics!
Teleological physics (syntropy) is dual to non-teleological physics (entropy).
"You must unlearn all that you have learned" -- Yoda.
      Learn is dual to unlearn.
"Always two there are" -- Yoda.
"The Force" = Duality, the Jedi worship duality!
