      I think it may be because they were using well known examples or may be trying to be more modern (hopefully the former). Though I will certainly be coming back for this list because I have a hard time with judging the pacing of a movie.

    I still maintain that Back to the Future is one of the tightest Hollywood scripts ever written. It's a setup and payoff master class.

      It was one of the best -- if not the best -- scifi/ family movie of the 1980s.

    • @robertporter8524
      @robertporter8524 5 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Absolutely, hands down, one of the best movies ever written. And not just because it's fun and likable, but exactly as you said - it's a master class in story structure; setup and payoff. You could teach an entire first year screenwriting course just by studying the plotting of this film.

    • @robertporter8524
      @robertporter8524 5 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      Rene Cantu “Payoff” in regards to how screenwriters introduce some sort of story element earlier in the script and then bring it back later in a more effective manner.
      Examples in BTTF would include Marty riding his skateboard around and hitching onto cars in the first act then using that as the basis for the awesome chase around the town square in the second act; also that he dreams of being a rock star and bombs out for the talent show auditions, then blows the roof off the school introducing everyone to rock and roll; also Lorraine reminiscing about how she and George fell in love, then Marty interrupting all of that, which became the second-biggest plot motivator of the whole story.
      Bob Gale did an amazing job of making use out of all the exposition in the film and turning it all into crucial plot action later. That’s the basis of narrative “setup and payoff.”

    Arriving at Rivendell/The Council of the Ring is what a lot of screenwriting books describe as Sequence C. The first (but failed) attempt by the Protagonist to resolve the central conflict. Frodo thinks he’ll be able to go back after this point but he’s dragged farther into the being away from where he’d like to be.
    Gandalf’s Death is the Midpoint, the twist that upsets the positive progress of Sequence D.

    For me. Watching these videos is like going to film school. It teaches you how things work, so later i can use that information to better understand the medium. Thanks for all the knowledge that you've given me Cinefix. Keep up the good work.
    Oh and could you make an entire video on why Citizen Kane is the greatest movie of all time.
    And Then later one of Godfather, 2001, Pulp Fiction etc.

    Good to see The Matrix on here. I think people forget (or are too young to remember... man I feel old...) just how mindbending it was to find out the entire world was a lie.
    Now, I know people will disagree with this, but the film that came to my mind when I read this topic was Memento. I've read criticism that says Memento is a film with a brilliant structure but a humdrum plot, but I really, really disagree (about the plot, anyway; I do think the structure is brilliant). The plot is the perfect, heartbreaking Sisyphean struggle of futility, and for me the key plot point is right at the end (or at the midpoint chronologically), where Leonard makes the conscious decision to embrace the futility and willingly sends himself down a false path by implicating Teddy.
    Damn I love that film.

      I do remember and I'm not young enough, but Matrix wasn't mindbending at all since the idea that the world is just a lie has been around for at least six thousand years.

    Why are people actually comparing a well-produced, well-explicated film analysis channel to a mediocre Top 10 channel? It'd make more sense if you compared it to Nerdwriter but Cinefix and Watchmojo aren't in the same lane.

    I like how every first honorable metion to each new plot point, was The Fellowship of the Ring. I was expecting this to lead up to something. Like having it be the fifth plot point, but no... it never happens...
    What a twist! Maybe this was planned, maybe there's a sixth plot point, and that's the "twist ending". The twist ending was that The Fellowship of the Ring never made it into the video. It was always just out of reach ;(
    I might just start calling the narrator "M. Clint Shyamalan".

  • @Leto85
    @Leto85 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I like this approach to watching and judging videos. This is something entirely different than the usual favourite bad-guy or worse sequels to movies.
    I think my favourite plot point would be the Inciting Incident, it's the moment of anticipation for what will happen now we know the character and now we know the character will venture out, willingly or forced.
    Obviously it depends entirely on how the plot point is being executed, but purely from a structural perspective, this is my favourite.

  • @shadu11
    @shadu11 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Excellent as always.
    How about doing a list of the top Ensemble protagonists?
    This would be movies like Breakfast Club, Lord of the Rings, excetera. This would not include movies where there is a group of people however one or two are really the main characters and the rest supporting characters.

    My favorite plot point of all time is from my favorite film of all time, E.T. When it is revealed that Elliot and E.T. have a connection with each other. It's introduced in the hilarious frog scene, it becomes a smart conflict when E.T. and Elliot get sick, and then heartbreaking when Elliot gets better while E.T. does not. My favorite part about is that there is no explanation for why this is happening. Instead of having an awkward exposition scene explaining it, we are forced to view it from the kids' perspective, who are met with confusion and awe.
    I would have also mentioned the twist in Arrival and the epilogue of La La Land for recency cred.

    I think Back to the Future makes use of derivations of its theme better than any movie in history. It's already supremely iconic, but they slide it in there at every pivotal moment as sort of a chime for when shit's hitting the fan and I love it.

    maybe it could be on an other list, like character devellopement plot points, but in Drive: right after the driver kills two gangsters in the hôtel room. He no longer"just drive", he's taking drastick actins. You even see him realizing it, face full of blood, eyes wide open, backing down slowly out of frame.

    The Wizard of Oz and SOTL were the _really_ only Films with *unpredictable* Plot twists in that list.
    The others you knew some screwup was coming, like the Alien popping out, it makes it a 💩.
    🅿
    You didn't include The Cell, or did I blink and miss it.
    It opens with a weird Plot twist that tells you little or nothing, followed by a series of literally insane twists (like Rotisserie Intestines) that rivet you and make everything seem unresolved. It adds up in the end.

    • @babotond
      @babotond 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you didn't just blink, you slept through the whole damn video.
      It isn't about plot twists, it's about plot points, the structure and key elements of any story, that is supposed to work, with or without any twists.

    Sometimes I think, “shouldn’t clarice have just left the house?” You know, and wait until backup? Then I remember, no. Her CO was like an hour away and who KNOWS if bill had an escape plan. She had to go in to his basement. I try and put myself in that place in my head.... and I have panic attacks think about it.
    It’s a hell of an ending.

    • @davedanger9839
      @davedanger9839 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Even more important than Bill's potential escape plan was the fact that they were racing against time to save the most recent victim and she was in that basement.

    Now that you mentioned the mid-point, one thing I notice is that it always comes at the middle of the movie. And I mean dead center middle. Try pausing the next movie you watch when the midpoint plot device appears. It's usually between 49 and 51% of the way through. Does this every single time!
