Five years ago I built a 40' X 60' X 16' high pole building with (3) large over head doors and a full second story walk in loft with stairway to access, full concrete floor, and roof trusses on 24" centers due to the loft, and it was $60K. This past year I built a 32' X 50' X 16' high with no second story loft, roof trusses on 48" centers, concrete floor, and only (1) large over head door and it was $60K (same price). Thats how much labor and material has gone up over that 5 year period. Both built be same contractor.
I'm converting a barn/warehouse into a livable "barndominium." The bones of the building are great from the slab to the roof, but the cost to renovate is ridiculous. Permits alone will cost me $20K. Bringing electricity to the panel, $15K. Gas, $8K. The original structure is a 30 year old building that I built 35 years ago for $5K. If it weren't for mandatory compliance with state and local authorities, this renovation would be affordable and easy. They want blood.

You got a lot of square footage and value for your money even though costs to build have gone through the roof. I would assume you live somewhere without much red tape involved in building like i do. I'm currently building a 40x80x16 with a 10x80 porch and 20x40 apron/approach. My concrete is being poured tomorrow, 6 inches everywhere at a cost of 34k, which is pretty painful but actually quite a good deal here. The building itself was 70k, but that includes premium black windows and doors ($4k more than white) and the 24x40 loft. The single 14x14 black commercial insulated door with windows and heavy duty opener is 7k itself. Excavation was 13k. I pre-plumbed it myself for a 12x16 bathroom over the weekend for under $600. The costs just keep adding up. It's going to be 26k to have the builder insulate and put metal walls in the 56x40 shop section. Ill probably have at least 5k in having an electrician wire the whole thing. Then, i can get to finishing all 1840 sq ft of living space myself. Once I get to the bathroom ill have to have a 15-20k septic installed. Im going to be eating ramen noodles for the next 10 years to pay for it, but it should be worth it.

I know that slopes don’t show well on video, but looking at the grade on the end of the building looks really steep. If so, you will save yourself some major headaches by bringing in more fill dirt to soften the slope. I’m in complete agreement that the cost of these barns have gotten so expensive.

@@MarquithLegacyAcres yes sir I hear you loud and clear. Is wasn’t what I wanted to spend 12 years ago 12k for 505 ft well on my 11 acre property, but glad I do it then. Doesn’t do any good to complain about price, it may go down a small amount but it’ll still cost more ten years from now. It’s what you wanted and dreamed of so just enjoy it. I’ll keep biting my tongue over the 15k for buried wire so I can maybe get a building someday 😤😤😂😂 that’s just the power co pulling wire and setting transformer and pedestal, not the digging, permit, or conduit 😮💨😮💨😮💨. Have a good one y’all.
I know that slopes don’t show well on video, but looking at the grade on the end of the building looks really steep. If so, you will save yourself some major headaches by bringing in more fill dirt to soften the slope. I’m in complete agreement that the cost of these barns have gotten so expensive.
Thanks for stopping by. I totally agree that I need to backfill some and soften the sloping. It is in the plan, just need to get to it. Appreciate your feedback.
Be nice to put up a smaller version to store our motorhome in. Around here the cost of land is outrageous though.
We always want more land and more buildings. Thanks for stopping by!
She's got the numbers!
Yes, she does great job with the finances.
I think you got this size of building and related work done on the less expensive side. Im checking on costs for same size in nebraska, and its looking like $150k.
Thanks for confirming! It does appear from comments that we did okay. Appreciate you stopping by and commenting.
Where are you from? Im a contractor and believe that would run closer to 90k around here. I think you did real good.
@@Raised-Right Western Kentucky. Glad to hear we did OK.
Well done.
Thank you, I appreciate your comment!
Nice project! Would cost 3 times that currently in western CO.
Thanks. We are enjoying it. Thanks for joining us.
Mountain West is beyond expensive, for anything.
I am doing a 20x26 concreate 4" pad for a shed and it is almost 10k
Yeah, concrete is really expensive in some areas.
Nice thing folks if you ever sell you will get plus back if not you got a great building
@@Robert-n4p1g Always trying to invedt in the future. Thanks for stopping by!
Great job
Anyone built one of these with full brick veneer? I live in a neighborhood with HOA. Wondering if this would be a better option than stick and brick?
The price is right. Mine is larger and cost a lot more but we are very happy with it.
Thanks for confirming. Appreciate you stopping by.
Refreshing to see someone on TH-cam who didn't pay 200K for a pole barn shell. It's doable.

Lookin to build a 60x126 18’ walls .. concrete alone quote over 100k
Wow, that would be out of my budget. Good luck with it!
@@MarquithLegacyAcres our plan is to eventually turn into a barndominium …thing is..here in wisco they charge out the ass n don’t like callin back..can’t call back I can only imagine work ya doin n if sumthin wrong then ya won’t answer for that either..its hard out here..I will put barn up myself with a few friends but concrete I don’t do..tried n not my thing..leave that to the ones that do every day n learned the do’s n don’t’s 😉
Just signed a contract to have a butchery built and I think I got a good deal too
@@RhondaFike-hopefuldrag Great to hear. Let us know how it turns out!
Not that bad of a price in my eyes. Mine was 40x64 and I had put 2 12’ insulated doors, and 2 10’ insulated. Mine was around 70k 5 years ago.
@@stevedenoyer5956 Thanks for the feedback
I live in Minnesota and planning on building next year. Haven’t gotten an estimate for the steel yet but a GC said to me concrete with frost fooding for a 40x60 will be around 30k…. I was shocked! I’m gonna try to do the foundation myself if possible to save at least 50% on that. I think too something like this shouldn’t be more than 50k to just putting it up, no offense to construction workers, i appreciate hard labor.
Concrete is definately a big portion of the costs. Thanks for stopping by.
You have your flag up already, good man.
@@Northernman68 It was one of the first things. Thanks for commenting on it!
Will they come up to New York for that?
@@evancobuilding I doubt they would go to NY, but it doesnt hurt to ask. Thanks for stopping by.
I built a 30 x50 architectual block/ 2x6 walls 16" high mezzanine 16 x 15.
3. 12 x12 insulated doors . 15 years ago. 65k. Probably cost 100 today.
@@johnw4590 Thanks for sharing.
$15k for the concrete was a bargain! My 30'x40' pad, at 4" cost me $12.5k, and that was the least expensive quote I got. The shop looks great!
Thsnks for stoppjng by and commenting.
$10 per square ft for 4" is what concrete is running here in SE WA state.
Looks awesome. Price seems fair to me.
Thanks. Appreciate you and your input.
Very interesting
Thank you my friend. Always appreciate you!
How strong is it compared to a regular stick built home
I really does not compare to a stick built. Instead of studs every 16", they have a post every 10 feet. This is a less expensive alternative that should hold up, but not as strong in my opinion. Thanks for stopping by.
Good job
@@banjobenson9348 Thank you!
I've been talking to a builder about doing a similar project. He was talking about insulation, to combat "sweating". Is this something you talked about or is it BS?
We put a light insulation - with vapor barrier on ours. I think it is a good idea to at least have a barrier, but that something that is personal preferrence. Thank for stopping by.
@@MarquithLegacyAcres Thanks!
Great place. Sounds like a fair price for that
@@ScottyLo Thanks. Most viewers agree with you that it is a good price.
I was looking at a 16x52 Portable building, but by the time I payed for it, it would have cost the same so now looking at pole barns again in a different lite.
I hope the video helped a little. Thanks for commenting!

Does that cost include the interior of the house?
No, just the framing, shell, doors, windows, etc
