I would epoxy the edges of the step plates so water can't get trapped between the step and plate and cause more rust.

Willie, you should use the ‘top down’ method for stacking and lighting your log burner. It not only heats up the chimney fast but you just stack it up with logs and kindling at once. Two logs on the bottom first, laying in some ash from last fire, then 4 or 5 kindling sticks stacked on top of the logs like jenga then in the middle of the top kindling add a natural firelighter or your screwed up paper. Light from the top and it’ll gently burn down to the logs and heat up the lum faster and create a good draw so there’s less or no blow back! Nice firewood by the way! Kiln dried hopefully as there’s way less chance of creosote on your chimney and burns hotter.

That’s the way l build my fire, works really well. We always have a good two inch layer of ash in the bottom, since that’s our main source of heat all winter we burn about 3 full cords each year.

I married a carpenter, and likewise I never hired out for any household repairs or builds. Fortunately, my dad (also a blue collar guy) taught me how to use tools and I was my husband’s apprentice because my husband had a stroke 8 years ago. Now I use the tools, and he’s my instructor/assistant. Folks who know how to do handy work need to teach their sons AND daughters. Cheers from warmer than normal Illinois.

Cracking job on the Landrover steps, they should last for more than a year now. However electrolytic corrosion between the aluminium plates and the steel base is very likely to hasten metal munching. You could delay it for a while by painting the top of the steel and the bottom of the aluminium with a layer of bitumen paint. I am looking forward to seeing more of Jack Spaniel in your next video.

Another video that makes for a relaxing Sunday, thank the three of you very much!
Several years ago I watched a TH-cam video by artist Jessica Henry Gray wherein she painted an owl in watercolor. Afterward she held a drawing and gave it away and wonder of wonders, I won! It's a lovely painting and I'm very happy to have it, so I understand how you felt when you won your prints. Congratulations!
You could post half an hour of Jack sleeping in front of the stove and I'll bet people would watch it. It was snowing here again when your video popped up on TH-cam and that intro bit of Jack and the fire was very welcome. ❤

You can steep chamomile or elderberry flowers with the horse chestnuts and that will add a light scent without adding a staining agent. We use horse chestnut soap to wash linen because it is effective at cleaning but not harsh on the linen.
On the Land Rover steps, you might want to grease those hinges with marine grade grease with a really low freeze point. Those hinges are going to seize up as it gets colder and they ice up.

5:15 So cute and cozy! ❤😊 Can you guys just record Jack and the fireplace for a while so I can put it on loop while I study? 🥰🙏
You bring us such great variety! Love to see you guys cook, fish, hike, build and gather. Now I want to see you guys sow, plant and harvest on all of that beautiful land you are blessed to be able to own! Who knows what amazing things you guys can do up there. Maybe you can build a teeny 1 bedroom log cabin for an air b&b! You can make a steady stream mostly-passive cash while all of those others things, like crops and animals can be worked on- if that’s the direction you want to go in.
I would think you would be doing these things, anyway, regardless of filming, because living in such a remote and harsh environment can leave you stranded without your own herbal remedies or sustenance. That’s why I know you guys will be so successful on your property. You are thinking long-term.👍
I really enjoy watching bush-crafting, survival, homesteading and prep for these reasons, so Sarah, I love that you make your elderberry cordial and laundry detergent. 14:28 The spoiled detergent is basically vinegar, which is extremely important to keep on hand at all times, in large amounts, as it is multicidal and also a preservative. Simple baking soda and vinegar makes amazingly soft and fresh-smelling clothes. The vinegar cuts grease, cleans, kills germs and softens the clothing, and the baking soda lifts the organic matter and cleans and deodorizes, as well. All you have to do for soap is plant hyssop or yucca, or a plant that has saponins. Hyssop is hardy and not only provides a very perfumed/fragrant smell with soapy lather, but it can also be used for dyspepsia.

3 things - 1) If you'd kept the green outer shell too, you could have made gorgeous natural chestnut brown dye with them. Sally Pointer may have something on her channel showing you how. 2) Science;: Suds have little to do with how clean your laundry is - (unless there's excessive suds, in which case, your laundry won't get clean). Surfactants adjust the surface tension of the water, act as a wetting agent for the fabrics & adjust the adsorption & absorption levels to ensure a balanced chemistry (liquid, gases etc) throughout the wash. 3) I've used various alternative detergents for years & my main observation was that I couldn't remember to use the home-made liquid in time, so I just used some nuts in a little cotton bag & hung it to dry after, so it wouldn't go mouldy. Next is that under 55s won't get much out of them because most don't know how to launder clothing anymore. Since schools stopped teaching HE etc, most people grew up slapping stuff in a washing machine with toxic chemicals then in an even worse dryer. They don't know that the laundry process includes examination & treatment of stains or odours before washing & that hanging laundry out in the sun is part of the disinfection, bleaching & stain/odour-removal process. A stained or malodourous item should not be added to the wash without pre-treatment, as it can contaminate other pieces; it should be treated immediately & soaked if it cannot be washed directly. Laundry chemicals are dangerous too, & not just for the environment; multiple times I've had to stop ppl from adding bleach to a detergent-filled laundry load - there are cryptic warnings on packets but since they don't learn HE at school anymore, they don't understand they're making Chlorine gas & that it can maim or kill. Alternative detergents are fine for ordinary lightly-used laundry if you consider all of the other processes required for your particular load, & adjust them accordingly. We even do most of our laundry in cold water here, but you may need to turn your heat up or soak etc. If people are prepared to put the work in, they're fine, but if folk have stained, stinky or heavily soiled laundry that they aren't able or willing to pre-treat, or if they're coal miners or whatever, they might need to think about alternatives. Historically, a copper cauldron was used for boiling whites on the fire & with an early relative of laundry soap - ash from the fire mixed with stale urine LOL.

So great to have Richard around, from his assistance, his skills, his supplies and his salty friendship. A real bromance for you two. Sarah, the conker detergent is amazing, especially as you did not pretreat the elderberry stain. Of course, it was a recent stain, but still. You do not need to have suds to make a cleaner, Saponins do not always suds up, but they do clean. Too bad about losing it due to not refrigerating it. Great new art. You three, well four with Richard, are really moving now with your life. Kudos to you all. Thank you for your lovely videos. I truly look forward to them each week. 💜💜💜💜

I have a wood burning stove of a similar size and during the winter months I use more than your stock pile folks. Maybe I’m doing something wrong. It will keep me watching LTSL til at least March !😅

That art you won is gorgeous and the frames you chose look so good against that white wall. Lovely contrast!
The steps on the Defender are awesome, it's honestly incredible how (comparatively) little effort it took to make them look so good again.
Happy belated birthday, Willie, and congrats on the seven fish you caught. At least the lobsters will get a feast before you feast on them!

Wood burns so quickly! They’ll easily get through that lot in a six month winter. It’s not a fossil fuel, of course but wood smoke is a heavy pollutant and they certainly would not be allowed to burn all that in a built-up area!
What is the alternative? I’d go for solar panels. Get enough of them should meet you needs. And once installed it’s a lot cheaper when you factor in a cost for the time fetching and carrying all that timber

I am so impressed with the conkers. I have allergy to many detergents. I would absolutely use it. Thank you so much. The steps on the Jeep came out gorgeous. Looks incredible, Willie. Wow. Well done both. Thanks to Richard also. Great one. He is very handy. He is a good friend. The prints you won from Lily are amazing. Very nice. Great video.

Willie, maybe you should have put some paint on the rivet holes in the step before you added the rivets? The bottom of the step will be exposed to water and will likely rust at those spots again over time. - oh well... looks like you gave them a second life anyway. - enjoying the Defender progress.

Jack was scarce in this one! I was a little worried but then I saw him near the end of the video. So now I've got my shot of Jack Spaniels for the week and I'm happy, phew! 😅🥃🐶

One tip, Willie - don't use the same grinder discs for both steel and aluminium. The dusts, when mixed, are very flammable (think thermite!). I'd also be tempted to run a bead of sealant around the edge of the chequerplate to stop water getting under it.

I w no idea on conkers, because we don’t have them; but I used “homemade” detergent for a while, shaved naptha, borax and soda. It was ok, but after a while I just didn’t feel like everything was clean, so I started alternating, which was slightly better. Now I use a sheet. Which I’m fairly happy with. I’m all for natural homemade if it works!
