Growling, if done properly, doesn't actually use the vocal chords...it's the area around the vocal chords that vibrates. There's a video of Lauren from Once Human at the throat doctor that describes and shows what's happening when she does it.

@@madddog6790 that's 100% correct! Actually there are two tecniques of the so called voiceless screaming, fasle chord and fry screaming, the differnce is that the vocal chords that flapper/vibrate when speaking or clean singing are either fully open ore completly locked toggether.
Alissa does fry screaming while most people do false chord. Both techniques, if done properly, don't hurt the voice, I can do fry screams and/or falso chord for two hours or more with out even getting rough.
Switching between clean singing and voicless screams takes practice but if you've done both enough to get muscle memory you basically only have to remember when to change
