Finally: An Honest Board Test | The Greatest Surfboard In The World #2

  • Which surfboard is the best in the world? In this series, I'm finding out.
Surfboard reviews are getting more cringeworthy by the minute. Here's why
1: Surfboard company releases new surfboard model
2: Surfboard company pays media outlet / surfer to review board
3: Media outlet is financially incentivised to avoid honest critique
In this series, The Greatest Surfboard In The World, I have received no financial returns nor do I have a vested interest in any of these top tier surfboard shapes in our test. Thus, I can tell you what I really think about each board.
There are some great surfboards, and there are some lemons.

The biggest skill example I can ever use is that pro's can surf body boards. With no fins. And still shred them.
None of us could do that in our wildest dreams. That's how large the skill gap is.
I still enjoy Stab in The Dark - almost purely just to see the pro's do their thing - but since they did the stupid ass pay portal, I have lost interest in even wanting to watch it. Could care less.
80% of surfers will get more out of Kale, than just watching the pretty visuals of a pro do their thing. Of course, most of us enjoy both. But Stab are really losing the core of their audience - the 80% of them - and Kale is catering to them. Ain't rocket surgery.

It's so hard to give a board a good review in one session though. I was surfing the Pukas Dark 5'10 1/2 epoxy a year ago for the first time and it took me a good 10 sessions to get used to the responsiveness of it. And it now is my favorite board ever.

Awesome round 2... I love the honesty regarding the boards. You are a really good surfer so it is interesting how you are choosing boards that are fun and easy to ride. Like you said... No one is paying you to ride these boards... I think a lot of us choose boards on marketing hype or some other factors that don't take into account our own riding style, ability, and needs.. Just a great lesson for us all that even someone like yourself didn't like what would be considered "Pro" models. Great job Brock. Have a great trip down the coast. Wish that Cohort was FutureFlex but what can you do. Bet it goes sick in the ocean.

loving this series... thank you! One constructive comment... the Red Baron would have felt more predictable/controllable with less upright fins than those MRs - some AMKs (or similar) would have given you a better experience imho whereas the Twinsman is designed to be used with the high aspect twin fins such as those MRs.

Much appreciation kale! But wrong mayhem and pyzel to test in tiny pool waves. You cant compare a fish to a board like the sub driver and shadow! Please compare similar board types next time perhaps the pyzel astro pop and mayhem rnf 96

I reckon the JS would go better with proper keels not the MR twin... They do look like they suit the album shape though

I had a Sub Driver a while back that I was not a big fan of either. I’m pretty sure it has a very low tail rocker and that is what I attributed it to. I also had the standard Driver model and loved that board. Completely different animal.
I bought a Twinsman a few months ago and have been loving it. Not sure if you tried it on the left but I think it also goes great backside which is usually not ideal for a twin.

You have to make a review of the rnf retro Mayhem surfboard with the al Merick keel twin fins

Wouldn't the phantom be the better pyzel to test as a daily driver? I might be wrong but I could have sworn that the shadow was advertised as the more performancy, good-wave version of the phantom.

Hey Kale. Just curious as to your height and weight? Been looking at Album's Twinsman in a 5'8. I'm 5'8 185 lbs and surf mostly beach break Florida not so good surf. I'm an intermediate to advanced surfer/ weekend warrior/ I used to surf a lot better haha type surfer. My normal everyday thruster shortboard is 5'8 32 liters epoxy and floats me fine, but looking for something a little more fun. But looking for an everyday driver that's an easy choice even if the waves get good! Do you recommend going your height, or shorter? What construction is the Twinsman you're riding? Thanks for your great videos!

Kale your videos are some of the best on TH-cam, on any subject.
I'd like to suggest a small tweak for this series. At the end when you give your star ratings if you could include which board it is on your graphic it would be a big help to other stupid people like me!
    Thanks for existing man

Ah sorry Michael! We found it just made the screen too busy with more writing and thought if we did it chronologically after the board’s reaction it would make sense - will see what we can do! Thanks brother appreciate it

Really interested what you think the difference would be if you used the Red Baron with keel fins. The fin box placement on it are designed for keels, not uprights like you used, but even so just interesting if it would feel any better!
