The historical references in this movie are wonderful. The scene in 25:10 references the very well-known legend of The Women of Weinsberg. In 1140, when King Conrad III defeated the Duke of Welf and placed Weinsberg under siege, the wives of the men in the besieged castle negotiated a surrender which granted them the right to leave with whatever they could carry on their shoulders, with the permission of the king. Leaving everything else aside, each woman took her own husband on her shoulders and carried him out. When the king's people saw what was happening, many of them said that that was not what had been meant and wanted to put a stop to it. But the king laughed and accepted the women's trick. "A king" he said, "should always stand by his word."
I saw this movie for the first time in my 30s. The historical references and many other things, such as the production value and the beautiful storytelling, make this one of my most appreciated movies.

@@whitenoisereacts i don’t think you guys were lying at all, you can have a good time with a movie and it can still not be your thing. I would just like to take the opportunity to talk about how society devalues anything women related and how romance is supposedly something for women. Objectively, an action movie is not better than a romcom for example. What makes a movie good is not the type of movie, but the writing, the acting, the cinematography, etc. Yet, a romcom is often seen as automatically silly and action movie as something cool. There are definitely some biases that influence how we appreciate movies. There isn't a problem with her birthright. The daughter of a Baron and a Comtesse is technically a member of the gentry. She's just not in a position to assert that birthright as she controls none of her father's estate.

This takes place before Napoleonic law. It's one of the few things that happened after the French Revolution that has stuck. Now, when the head of an estate passes away, it is passed half to the spouse and the other half split among their children. I'm from Louisiana and to sell my grandfather's house my grandmother and all six of his children had to sign off (my dad asked my brother and I if we were interested, we were not, and yet he still debated making both of us sign off rather than him.)

OHHH This is honestly one of the good Cinderella adaptations in terms of making Cinderella a more independent person whilst fitting into the narrative constrictions. Takes the most time to develop their relationship, takes the most time to establish why Cinderella can't leave and how abusive her situation is. Many of them either push too hard on the girl boss narrative or never really invest in matching the world-building to the characters and their storyline. Or don't try anything new.
Cinderella Man would be cool on too

It’s the reason why I once said that Cinderella is the moral of resilience through “Kindness” as most or nearly everyone would be jealous of her because she is what most people cannot find in themselves.
I guess that’s why I’ve found something so special in Cinderella since I was young, because I found and truly understood that even when she was going through her breakdown and moment of burnout for finding a reason to basically keep living and finding a reason for hope in herself and in patience for others, I found that she has always been my role model and I have always been sad whenever I couldn’t be like her in times that I really got frustrated and found it hard to forgive when I felt betrayed again and again and rejected to a point where I felt like the hope I was given was just beginning to be just me trying to believe people I wanted to change, would change. But I believe that through it all, kindness is one of the most purest things you can ever come across and it also comes in many forms, but in Cinderella’s case, it was her innocence and resilience that shows her self preservation as she remains true to herself and won’t change for anyone because she knows that’s what she believes and wants which takes COURAGE. To put aside your pride even when you could seek revenge or injustice. That’s why I love this version as much or more than the Disney, as the Disney one isn’t representing Cinderella to be desperate for someone to save her, she had been trying to save HERSELF using her belief in KINDNESS and her relief and hope and award happened through her struggle to be her happiness which was love from a Prince who helped her escape her circumstances that she didn’t deserve.
People need to understand that people do not live alone, but receive help and support from others whether it’s intentional or not in whatever situation. Life is made with multiple circumstances and people give each other what they need together, so even if it took a Prince to save Cinderella, it’s much more than the unobserved label for rags to riches complex that she “needed” a man. She needed love and hope. And love was her reward because time compiles all her good deeds to determine her as a person throughout and not just the outcome of her award. Life is a hard test, so let’s see if you could compare yourself to Cinderella and see how much you know yourself with self forgiveness and forgiveness for others and to learn and be kind. It’s not easy.

    • @speedracer2008
      @speedracer2008 ปีที่แล้ว

Not only that, but the accusation that she just sat around waiting for a prince to come around to save her from her abusive home, instead of taking action to leave herself, just comes off as victim blaming.

Just finished watching and gosh...real shame you didn't enjoy it more James lol. 😝
This movie when it came out was a very nice and enjoyable version of the Cinderella tale. I loved the aspect of Leonardo Dr Vinci was slid in there as a added supporting character. For the time period, it felt more of a "real" actual telling of Danielle's story from her GG Granddaughter. And all the places they used for filming, esp. that wonderful castle was just a feast for your eyes. The actors were good in their roles, though....sigh yes, not many Americans can do a really good British accent. That's pretty much a given. I had forgotten that it was an early- Toby Jones movie, he was in 2 of the Capt.America movies if you remember. Anjelica Huston is pretty much film royalty in her Grandfather and Father were very well known actor/ directors. Her Father was - John Huston, and her brother is also an actor who's been in various films for years. ( He plays- Stryker in : X-Men Origins: Wolverine.) Anyways, this movie is loved by many girls and women who are very much Romantics lol.

(Hence the reason the first step-sister is like the mother.) 4) definitely better than the dark telling of the story. And 5) getting to know the person through out the story, is better dynamic of the Prince and Daniella.
And the last one within my books is the actual location for the feel of the movie. Which is strange to have actual location for those outdoors scene.

growing up this was my favorite version of cinderella because of how they both made this true to the cinderella story but also how dimensional she felt and relatable. That she's not just a character of fairy tale, she feels like many strong women that we admire in our real lives as a child. I had hoped that when Disney decided to make the live action films of the cartoons that they would've gone with something closer to this.

My Folklore and Mythology class in college spent a quarter on Cinderella. There are thousands of versions from every era of every region of Europe. There is no 'original' as it derived slowly from multiple sources slowly becoming recognizable and then diversifying out into new stories slowly dissolving back into the collective unconscious. Folklore and Mythology are the social scars of trauma, and the stories the mechanisms culture learns to cope with change. Letting them dissolve back into new stories, as much as it seems a travesty to purists, is the healthy way humanity deals with life, collectively.

One of my favorite movies, though Drew's accent is really awful! I think "Nine" got the context in history. James has to get out of the 21st century and learn a bit about how life worked in the past. Arranged marriages, class divides, duty. Of course this movie messed with that in having "Danielle" be so independent, and the Prince as well. The only let-down of the film is when she doesn't allow the Prince to rescue her. But this is about a film and not a lesson in history. Thanks for watching it.

... Yeeaah the way female-aimed movies are still shit on and downplayed even when they're amazing... lol. I'm not going to hate on these guys because a lot of men feel the same way (for obvious reasons) but sometimes I have to ask what an already great romantic movie has to do to be seen as valid by some people.
I guess I get it though, I also feel adverse to movies that I view as too testosterone-packed despite how objectively good they are.

It kinda has nothing to do with that. It wasn’t my kind of film, doesn’t have to be a women or man thing. It’s the same as someone not liking an action movie

@@whitenoisereacts Saying it's not your "kind" of film definitely comes off as you just can't tolerate a chick flick and all those gooey feelings. I thought you guys weren't that immature. Bummer.

about her dad - one of the first symptoms of a heart attack is some pain in the arm, usually above the elbow. Just strange sudden pain, look it up, it varies. it's a great interpretation on how he could've died. In the story his death is sudden, just while he is leaving the estate, so the heart attack is really good modern and reasonable take on it. I like this movie because of how it interprets magic and how it covers "plot holes" of the tale, without making it stupid or exaggerated like all new disney remakes did with their source material))

The Cinderella story type is really old there's soooo many versions, the first version comes from China, Cinderella is called Ye Xian it's from around 850CE and her fairy godmother character is a goldfish!

As a french, I think they showed very well how was the life in old times.

You should react to non Disney fairy tale movies, like Peter Pan 2003, Alice in Wonderland 1999, The Slipper and the Rose, Beauty and the Beast 1946, Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow, Snow White a Tale of Terror, and The Company of Wolves

Imagine this: your husband died so for the sake of your children you need to marry somebody immediately they can be handsome or not, they just need to have a good money to support the children, other than one day after barely meeting him he dies and you’re stuck with his children and your children alone, a single parent to raise. That’s what the Baroness had to go through that’s why she’s like this, she tried her very best to find the prettiest a daughter she had to marry the prince to support.
This is not me supporting her, but that’s just the situation of how it was like back then

I LOVE this movie!!! Definitely my #1 favorite remake. My 2nd fav is probably the 2015 Disney live action. Those are the only two I’m thinking about right now. But ether way I love this film and it’s definitely my #1 and will always be me #1 favorite. I love fairytale medieval type of movies that take place in the past. I think this version is based more off the actual story I think I remember seeing that online or hearing that somewhere, I could be wrong though. Love the videos!

  • @PPfilmemacher

    My absolute favorite cinderella adaptation
And the main reason are Drew Barrymores and Anjelica Hustons excellent Performances
Especially Drew Barrymores portrait of the main character Danielle is the main reason why this movie worked despite all the Major historical inaccuracies and the really shallow writing including the extreme cheesy love story as the main the main story arc
instead of Focusing on Cinderellas miserable life (being the actually main story in the disney animated movie and in the original fairytale from the Brothers Grimm fairytale books) caused by her incredible cruel stepmother and stepsisters but also her unbreakable ability to not get dragged down by this live and becoming also a miserabel person instead she was being able to keep her main character feathers of pure goodness loveliness and kindness in contrast to her whole life being degraded to a worthless house slave forced serving horrible people in her own families property stolen by her stepmother
I really believe Drew Barrymore acting Carries the whole movie to the end and i cannot imagine any other actress of the mid 90s wich also have being fill the role like Drew have done and without her the movie would probably being the sane tremendous Trainwreck like the currently released new Cinderella remake produced by Amazon wich nobody asked for and with almost everyone going in to this version with already pretty low expectations, the movie have been managed surprising everyone the even the lowest expectation was still to high for this hideous abdomination of a Cinderella story retelling owned by Amazon
