  • Since they like the NET/PBS logos, I decided to update the NET/PBS History. Includes rare versions. All Credit and Video Courtesy of PTVhistoryproject, Joe B, NETNetwork, JohnnyL80, mcydodge919, MegaMoneyMan99, among others. I do not own anything. Enjoy!

    The 1989 ID is my favorite. It reminds me of my childhood so much, seeing it after “Sesame Street,” “Mister Rogers,” “Reading Rainbow,” among others. There’s just something about it that brings nostalgia.

    I always was a bit scared of the 70's PBS sign after Sesame Street, Mr. Rogers, and The ORIGINAL Electric Company, but that was what I remember watching PBS as a kid

    Fun Fact the PBS 1998 and 2004 logos would show your local PBS Station's call letters and local affiliate name rather than a generic logo. for example it would say....Your watching PBS KVIE 6 Sacramento Stockton Modesto as the generic logo gets plastered over.

      I came across the very rare color NET Logo (with words) when I watched a 1968 episode of "Black Journal" here on TH-cam. It was posted from someone in the UK, who got a copy from the Library of Congress (I think). I informed NETNetwork, and he was able to post them here on TH-cam. youngleader610 then got the footage from him. I found the second "NET Carpet Logo ID" on a 1962 documentary about computers that was made by KQED San Francisco, California, and was posted at, I think, the DailyMotion web site (which is a Canadian-based competitor with TH-cam). I told NETNetwork about it, and he posted that ID video footage on TH-cam. Finally, I came across a multi-part series on an Indian Philosopher that aired on NET in 1966 here on TH-cam (with Spanish language subtitles added to the original footage). It had a different kind of black-and-white NET House Logo ID, with white shaded words, instead of dark shaded ones seen on the black-and-white videotapes of "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" from 1968. Once again, I told NETNetwork about them, and he posted the footage on TH-cam as well.

      NET was started up in 1952 as a clearing house for educational films to be aired by university-owned/operated television stations. In the late-1950s, The Ford Foundation provided a major source of funding, and the organization decided to form a separate television network. But by the time The Ford Foundation renewed their funding for NET, they (NET) were limited by how they could grow the network, by how they could take advantage of the changing technology of videotaped programming, and live "via satellite" programming, and by how they could obtain additional funding. NET was deep in debt, and the Ford Foundation was going to cut back greatly on their funding for the network by the early-1970s. NET ended up going to the US House and US Senate for funding. They were reluctant to fund NET, but President Johnson saw a future for public broadcasting. President Johnson was able to cut a deal with the US House and US Senate to create the Corporation For Public Broadcasting (CFB) in 1967. When President Nixon was elected, he did not like the documentaries that aired on NET that made the US Government look bad. He established PBS in 1969 to compete with NET, and to "keep NET in line politically", with the threat of being shut down in favor of PBS. NET management did not listen. In 1970, NET aired a documentary about the deceptive business practices of large US banks, and President Nixon essentially shut NET down by the Fall of that year.

    • @Zapruderfilm1963
      @Zapruderfilm1963 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      PBS was born out of NET. PBS was essentially a name change from National Educational Television to Public Broadcasting Service beginning in 1970.

    • @LaptopLarry330
      @LaptopLarry330 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      juliajuliagenevieve From what I have read on the Internet, there was a two-year period, in 1969 and 1970, when NET and PBS ran parallel with one another, and both funded by the Corporation For Public Broadcasting. Nixon was responsible for phasing out NET, because he did not like their programming content. The way PBS was set up, the Federal Government had more control over the programming content that was broadcast on the network.

      @Zapruderfilm1963 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Larry Ressler
      Hi Larry, yes you are correct about what you have read. You will see a multicolor PBS logo that just reads "" Public Broadcasting Service"" in the same three primary colors that the NET logo was using at the same time. This was the phase out period. You are also correct concerning Nixon's views on funding a national network. Good comment Larry. :O)

    • @LifeinAnalog
      @LifeinAnalog 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not exactly. It comes from an episode of "Square One TV." It was only used when that particular episode aired, it carries on from a sketch that featured on the show.

      +Gal Mordechai The first two NET "Carpet" logos are the same. The only difference is in the announcers for the network IDs. In the December, 1963 episodes of the 3-part NET miniseries, "The Fuller World" (starring Buckminster Fuller, an architect and futurist), they feature the only NET "Carpet" logos seen on a videotaped program, and feature a third announcer for the network ID. This gives me the impression, that NET gave the network affiliates the responsibility for doing the voiceovers for their own programming made for broadcasting by the network. If the production was filmed and/or kinescoped for network affiliates to broadcast at their discretion/leisure, NET would provide them with stock footage of the NET "Carpet" logo, and the NET station would use one of their employees to do the voiceover work for the network ID.
