    🚩 Duke William (1027-1087) is an emblematic figure in the history of Normandy, best known for his conquest of England.
    However, his turbulent youth is rarely spoken of. His father, Robert the Magnificent, died and left an eight-year-old boy in charge of the Duchy. A number of barons refused to obey a “bâtard” and brought civil war to Normandy. The young Duke narrowly escaped death and was forced into hiding. When he reappeared in around 1040, new revolts broke out.
    William is about to live through a defining moment of his life, which, though ignored by many people, will be of great importance to him - and others: the Battle of Vas ès dunes. On the outcome of this battle will depend not only the future of Normandy, but later, as we know it, the future of England and France.

      Hello HistoryMarche,
      I loved your video but I have some questions. Mainly what are the sources you used for information about Williams early life and how did you find and gain access to these sources? I recently attempted to do a symposium topic on Williams early life but was frustrated by a lack of general information from any kind of source! I have been wondering how you go about finding information for this topic in particular?

    During William's campaign in England. There was a town he besieged who taunted him for his illegitimate birth by hanging cow hides on the battlements as way to mock him for his mother being the daughter of a tanner. After William captured the town, he had several people from the town skinned alive.

    • @ChrisDynamo
      @ChrisDynamo ปีที่แล้ว

      The commentary's horrendous. He can't even say "William" correctly! He's saying it like he's from Scotland ('Will-yum'). No Englishman pronounces the name like that, and saying it scores of times only emphasises it. It's the same with "rebellion", which he pronounces 'rebel-yun'. He's not Scottish so it doesn't make sense. No effort in pronouncing French towns correctly either. Why this channel discarded a far better narrator for this guy, I don't know.

    I enjoy these vignettes of ancient and medieval battles, especially the more obscure ones. In this case I could figure out which way the battle would go, but it was exciting nevertheless.

    Nearly all his supporters and allies died. His rivals and their mothers were trying to kill him. And even the French king was moving against Normandy. But they all made one mistake when dealing with William the (future) Conqueror: They made him MAD.

    Quick correction, the French were still called the Franks at this era it was much later (300 years later) that the shift between "Franks" and "French" started to occur.

    • @TemplarX2
      @TemplarX2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There is literally no difference between the name French and Frank. French is just a corruption of Franc (which literally means Frank). Even Francais (French) means Frankish. It's like the name English which basically a form of Angle.

    • @tonyhawk94
      @tonyhawk94 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TemplarX2 Yes there is a difference but it is minor.
      Philippe Augustus started to shift from king of the Franks to king of France, in order to mark the fact that he reigned over a geographic area not a people, it was in the context of the war against the English when he needed to assert his legitimacy over the regained territories after the battle of Bouvines.
      But still the French remained called "francs" long after this event.

      @@tonyhawk94 The terms "franceis" and "France" are attested in the Chanson de Roland so a French identity already existed especially among the nobles
