      I recommend any site using images taken by others (whether legally purchased or not) talk to a lawyer first. I follow DMCA standards and registered with Safe Harbor to avoid big copyright issues. By having a simple DMCA takedown process and complying with them, I'm able to make sure my site only has images that creators actually want on it. 99.99% do in my case. It's great exposure for them personally and professionally 👍

    For the images used by very big magazines like Cosmo, I don't think it was necessarily vetted by their attorney as "you can do that", but more as a "your liabily per image in case of a lawsuit would probably be around $XXXX", and then it's just risk management. They just figure they're probably never gonna get sued for that, and even if they do, and if they lose, it's still gonna be profitable.

    Great interview, thanks for sharing! can you elaborate on the technical side? Are the photos in the carousel from multiple creators, and do you include links to their profiles within the carousel itself?
    Do your photos primarily feature people or just products? Considering liability, wouldn't featuring people be riskier?

    • @tonythill
      @tonythill 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      We download the images. The source is credited by adding it next to the image with their name and a link to their social media profile 👍 Sometimes creators put their own watermark on the image. Which I think is smart and good practice. Because there are a lot of shady sites out there who use their images without attribution.

    hey! thanks for interview! Very informative. one question regarding carousels, why? Why exactly carousels? They might slow your site and sometimes google might not index them properly. Can you share some info how to use carousels properly?

    • @tonythill
      @tonythill 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      You bet! Carousels... I tested this as well as normal vertical scrolling and at least for my site, user engagement was much higher with carousels. Plus when you have vertical scrolling, ads are always in the way as you have to scroll passed them to see the content further down. With carousels the ads are fixed and don't break up the flow of view images. All the content is on the page. The carousels use javascript and CSS, so it has no issues with indexing and ranking. Split test it on your site and see which works best for you.

      Yeah I don't know who made that up. I say test it yourself and see how many you can do each day before you start getting diminishing returns. In my opinion, Pinterest doesn't care how many pins you're pinning each day as long as you're pinning great images and linking them to a high quality and helpful page. Yeah. It seems like just one big copyright strike away from damaging their revenue because it is still not their photos and they are making money from them. Personally, I would not do this for the main websites. Maybe an experimental website willing to lose everything.

    • @tonythill
      @tonythill 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@krod16I recommend to everyone to talk with an attorney about using others images. That’s what I did. There are some US laws that protect people who create and post original images on the internet and US laws that protect certain entities who use those images. A small entity can get full permission in writing to use an image and still get sued and go bankrupt in court costs to prove their innocence. It’s like that in any business or niche, whether it’s a copyright issue or anything else 👍

    • @krod16
      @krod16 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@tonythill Sure. More power if that can be done. But small entities typically won't get sued because there's not much money to extract. Once companies become a little big they can become target to get some free money. And in this case it would be valid if there are copyright issues. Like you said it's a grey area and it's just personally I prefer to stay away at least for a business that would be my paycheck. It's fine for any experimental business that one is willing to throw away maybe.

    Gael - have me on the show. I've been hammering away at this since 2012. Hit me up.

    Gael is microdosing mushrooms, you can see the glow, while his guests are boring and unenthusiastic

      @@tonythillhey Tony great chat. Can you provide the name of one of the big magazine sites or other sites that use the same technique. I know you mentioned it but don’t have time to go through and find that part again. Thanks mate

      I see he mentioned cosmo, Birdy and glamour. But the sites I found don't show a carrocel with ads bellow. I am confused. Would you please send me a sample of page like that, even if not from the three sites above? Thank you
