2020 Honda Odyssey Roof Rails and Cross Bars Install for models 2018-2020 | DIY roof rack

  • Our previous 2007 Honda Odyssey came with roof rails from the factory, and I added on the crossbars when I bought the storage topper. Now they don't even come with a roof rack. When I bought the new 2020 Honda Odyssey the dealership quoted me almost $1,000 for the add-on. I said no thanks and decided to figure out how I could get it done cheaper. But the installation turned out to be more involved than I anticipated. In this video, I will walk you through what I had to do to get this installed. In the end, I still would have bought it myself.

    Looks like it doesn’t need “cutting”. The mounts rest above the rail… not between the cuts… so I just drilled holes matching the male mount bolts and attached the base that way. With blue locktite… was a bit easier that way, I feel.

    • @CarolinaCowboys

      OEM is usually high quality and guaranteed to fit right. I usually haul a lot of weight on top and the worst thing that could happen is something fails and everything goes flying off the back. I would suggest buying the OEM rack and bars then add a Kayak roof mount which will connect to the bars.

    • @CarolinaCowboys
      @CarolinaCowboys  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      So far it's been great, we've already been on a few trips. The top things I like are the 10 speed transmission which helps on the long trips when you're going over hills it doesn't shake the whole van when downshifting, and the brakes are way better than previous years.

  • @danhd.8313
    @danhd.8313 ปีที่แล้ว

    Man... everything went great until last crossbar. 2 of the holes for the bolts started spinning with the bolts so I could no longer tighten or back out the bolts. They are both for one side of the crossbar attachment. The 2 on the opposite side tightened just fine. I always thought there could be a chance that the bolt strips but didn't think the connector in the hole would be the problem. Not even sure how to address this as I don't want to return everything and start over.

    • @CarolinaCowboys
      @CarolinaCowboys  ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh wow, yes it sounds like the welded nut on the inside of the housing broke off. All is not lost! I have a few ideas. If there is enough of a gap you can hack saw the bolt in half and let it fall on the inside, even if you can't hack saw the bolt you could drill out the head. But then use an expansion bolt instead which is a bolt that will expand inside and tighten it up good. Another option is you can leave those 2 bolts in place and then drive some self tapping screws in between the 2 bolts though it won't be pretty.

      @@CarolinaCowboys I called the dealer I purchased from and they said bring it in to show them. I'm going to try that first and maybe a technician can help. I'm worried if I hack the bolt and let it fall inside, wouldn't it be moving around in there making all kinds of rattling noises? The dealer I purchased it from said for me to bring it in and show them the problem. Hopefully, they are willing to help me with the issue, since I'm calling it a defect on their part. Will keep you posted.

      @CarolinaCowboys  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@danhd.8313 ok if you bought it from a local dealer that’s good news, they would much rather help you get it fixed than return everything. Regarding the bolt, perhaps it would move some, you could always spray some expanding foam in there to fill the void.

    Do you still own this van? We have been debating between a new odyssey or the sienna. Honda allows an 8 passenger in the elite trim, but Toyota limits the trim with an 8 passenger configuration. Thoughts?

      I think you're still going to want to use it. Part of the issue is putting too much weight in the very back creates a weight distribution issue for vehicle handing, as well as very uneven wear on your rear tires.

  • @Watchman999

    well right now I have learned that the tailgate control module is fried and it might be water damage. It lives kind of down gradient from the roof channel on the drivers side and I had Honda stealership install the roof rack. I’m suspicious that the stealership installer damaged the sealant in that channel and water is getting inside. It’s a disgusting mess and I’m pretty unhappy.

    • @CarolinaCowboys

      Have you started looking for wet spots? It could be as simple as weather stripping. Or if they caused an issue, they may have drilled a hole in your roof, maybe they stripped one of the OEM holes, the only way to know is to take the roof rails back off to see.

      Thanks! I ended up using tin snips also b/c of your comment. Took 1hr on the first side, then 45mins on the 2nd. Didn't use a tape measure on 2nd side either. Just placed the trim next to the mounting bolts and cut about 1" on either side. Really easy once you install the first side - you see what you're playing with. Tip for using tin snips: cut the bottom metal first, then bend it up and cut the top. This avoids smashing the channel.
