Same with goalkeepers where footwork is nearly seen as important as shot stopping. Full backs have to be progressive rather than tacking. Crazy.

Build up play has become more important in the modern game.
Modern teams are more compact vertically. Which means the distance between their strikers and their defenders are closer. They defend with 11 players forming a block.
Therefore, you need 11 creative players to break down that block. That’s why modern defenders and goalkeepers are required to be so much more technical on the ball.
In the past, being a goal hanger isn’t that big of a trade off, because your team could still be able to create through a 4 men defence. But nowadays, you can’t afford to be one man down in the build up process because you are facing 11 defenders.
This is why modern football has become more “TOTAL”. A striker’s job is not just finishing, but also defending and creating. Otherwise your team would be in a numerical disadvantage in the defensive/build up phase.
The same applies to defenders and goalkeepers. Being “TOTAL” not only means you are not in a disadvantage in other phases, it allows more position swapping opportunities to break down those low blocks, hence more tactical flexibility. This is why serving the system has become so much more important in modern football.

Yes it has changed and strikers have to be able to do more as you have brilliantly explained.
But I bet if you could offer a prime Van Nistelrooy or Michael Owen to any PL team other than City they would bite your hand off for them despite what they lose out in build up.
In the change of player development into total footballers who can play comfortably in a variety of positions and are technically more comfortable in possession you have less players that hit that absolute top echelon level in specialist positions like CF and CB.
Not saying they don't exist, there is just less of them compared to 20-25 years ago because they now have to devote so much more of their development in all areas rather than focussing their development in one particular discipline.

I agree and disagree. I see Roy's point but if Haaland is scoring insane numbers then it doesn't matter. If City are destroying teams, it doesn't really matter. Look at Hoijland at United, same age and huge potential but can't get the touches or goals. Peps teams have usually utilized a false nine and have picked teams apart. When Haaland was signed for City I was skeptical he was going to thrive in that system. He does when KDB is on the field with him because he plays to Haaland strengths which is turning players and running in behind, not playing like Kane and dropping deep to play another in. I feel with Haaland, City struggle more to unlock a low block team because he just occupies the box and the CBs can just sit on him, unlike if Aguero was there the CBs would be pulled out and stretched. Kinda like when Klopp had Salah/Mane/Brazilian(name escaped me).

However in football they are two positions where can accurately measure how good a player is , these are being a goalkeeper and Striker.if you wanna know how good a good a goalkeeper is look at his stats and this matters more for strikers .
Klose overall was a bang average striker when you consider his club record as well . Haaland is a good striker . Also people forget they are different types of strikers . Haaland is probably closer to Robert Lewandowski and maybe Harry Kane . When he peaks he won't be the Brazilian Ronaldo nor Henry in terms of playing style . Neither will be like Suarez or Benzema .

Haalands strenghs have been weighed, measured and neutralised. His all round play isnt PL standard and without the goals he provides little. Without service on a plate the goals dry up and analysis shifts to his build up play which weve just discussed... Big Donkey...... Nunez will be the better striker very soon

Roy keane is the player that almost stripped the fun out of football.
    He isn’t a football player , he’s a butcher.

Haaland is just a goal hanger. He is a massive liability in the build up.
So his team will have less and lower quality of possession, ball progression and chance creation, which will eventually reduce the total number of goals his team can score.
Three times against Arsenal this season. Haaland is invisible, and registered an extremely low xG.
If ManCity had played a tekky/creative false 9 instead, Arsenal would not be able to defend. Because ManCity’s tiki taka play would be so much more dangerous, it’s like they have 16 players on the pitch.
