This being educational content is exactly what i was thinking. It would be awesome if Mat had a 2 torso's per gun large enough to do damage so we could see the damage it does, and see what would be done unprotected. It would also illustrate the damage of caliber vs speed. Would like to see Matt put a torso point blank and one as far out as he can, bring a guest who can hit extreme long range, and see how they compare between calibers, say 556, 308, + at 1000, 1500, and up as far as they can.
The people attempting to silence/censor this type of education are the same people who want to take your firearms. Interesting that they want to disarm you AND stop you from know the effect of body armor has on your body when saving your life

Keep in mind, it would really depend on the muscle mass of an individual. Also, Live tissue is much more resilient than ballistic gel, this would be absolute worst case, as if a big toddler was wearing this...
@@DOA220 yeah plus no clothes to cushion the impact (wouldn't really help but counts for something), it being fixed in place so the bullet is not being able to transfer the momentum the target and the target itself being hit dead centre. Still it would fuck you up and probably quick way to being marked KIA unless it's a graze.
Also keep in mind the amount of pressure from the muzzel blast if a .50 bmg is insane. It would likely not have exploded like that if the barell wasnt inside the ballistic torso
I've been wanting to see this exact type of experiment. We've all seen body armor stopping bullets, but how much damage is still taken? I think we need more data. Can't wait for the next video.
The result is what we expected: ouchie, but not ded, but now we know how ouchie it is, and what will happen if the plate were hit by a rather obscure cartridge, the manufacturers won't be bothered to test their plate with flatnose 700gr .500 S&W after all.

strange that even the low caliber transferred enough energy to break the sternum. I've watched videos of a guy taking a 7.62X51 point blank while wearing armor and it did nothing to him.

Finally!!! As someone who's worked in a level 1 trauma center, I wanted to see the effects a stopped bullet has on a body. I've only seen bullets go into the body...
I work in cardiovascular surgery so I have seen several gunshots and what they do to a healthy body but it is fascinating to see what an armored plate does.
As an EMT in the field the penetrating wounds looked fairly accurate to what we've had happen, but like he said I was watching to see how much energy was actually absorbed by the armor and how much was still transferred into the torso. Awesome video Matt!!!
@@TimSzabo it didn't bend upward, he racked a bullet into it. So the barrel in this gun pushes up in the front when it racked a round in. Think the barrel stays straight but is cocked in comparison to the handle

Fascinating that even with a a Class IV *plate*, you get a broken sternum and internal bleeding from a 10mm. Broken sternum isn't something you just brush off - every time you move it hurts. (motorcycle foulup. the ribs still ache years later...)
Even if the bullet hits the armor, it still could be really dangerous. The force of the bullet pushes against the vest with it against your body, causing all the force to be put into the vest. It causes severe bruises and could puncture your lungs very easily. This video is a very good example of this.
I have something for Matt to try out AND it's actual science, make bullets with a neodymium magnet and shoot them in a copper pipe at different lengths to see how much pipe is needed before Lenz' Law stops the bullet, upvote so Matt can see this !

There's a reason why big sticks (bo staffs, etc) were still heavily used during medieval times. Blunt force trauma gives no fucks if you're wearing a helmet, you'll still die from a good thwack.

5:16 why did the barrel bend upward?
@@TimSzabo it didn't bend upward, he racked a bullet into it. So the barrel in this gun pushes up in the front when it racked a round in. Think the barrel stays straight but is cocked in comparison to the handle
@@TimSzabo it's a floating barrel, it helps smooth the feeding of the round into the barrel. :)

Fascinating that even with a a Class IV *plate*, you get a broken sternum and internal bleeding from a 10mm. Broken sternum isn't something you just brush off - every time you move it hurts. (motorcycle foulup. the ribs still ache years later...)
Even if the bullet hits the armor, it still could be really dangerous. The force of the bullet pushes against the vest with it against your body, causing all the force to be put into the vest. It causes severe bruises and could puncture your lungs very easily. This video is a very good example of this.

I have something for Matt to try out AND it's actual science, make bullets with a neodymium magnet and shoot them in a copper pipe at different lengths to see how much pipe is needed before Lenz' Law stops the bullet, upvote so Matt can see this !

Better than saying “I looked this up. I know how to do this.” Someone got a broken arm with exposed bone, and some idiot tried wrapping it with plastic wrap. EMS was not happy when they showed up.
This is something I've wanted to see for a long time. I'm surprised nobody has done this sooner. Like this is a true body armor test. Yeah we know that it'll stop the round, but we all know that energy still goes into your body.
I would like to see such a model of the human head and then testing ballistic helmets with it

Yup. It’s there to save your *life*, not protect you from serious injury and pain. Honestly though, it’s amazing how a 5 pound plate can protect so much!
There's a reason why big sticks (bo staffs, etc) were still heavily used during medieval times.
Blunt force trauma gives no fucks if you're wearing a helmet, you'll still die from a good thwack.

Now you break out the Cudgel, Mace, Shillelagh, Hammer, Morningstar, (basically anything with a head or heavier front end to concentration the weight and force)

Your brain is going to be shaken around quite a bit
