Catan may not be the best game in existence, that's not what I'm saying. But it's becoming "cool" to rag on it these days! Well I got a bunch of the game/expansions and I'm here to give a general guide on what they include, which I reccomend and talk about why I still enjoy Catan.

Played Catan for the first time last night and had a blast! We played at 4 players with Seafarers expansion.
Fantastic material (as usual!). One of the main reasons for enjoying your work is quality which You deliver Luke and other is Your "grumpy" enthusiasm for the hobby!!! Keep going and don't change!!!
This video actually got me thinking about Catan... Never played it. I got myself Star Trek version of it but as we all are getting sucked in to playing new games, somehow it got "left behind". Recently I started going back to some classics which I own or can play in my club: Carcassonne, Chess, Pandemic... and I just realised that I never played base version of the game. Definitely agree with you that we cannot get sucked in to kult of the new. Especially this days. That is why I added Catan to my collection. Trick is... Basic sounds bit too basic. I like what You said about Explorers & Pirates hence if I would be the lucky one: that would be my choice.
This is an awesome video. Thanks for promoting and defending this amazing game. As a fan myself, I approve of this general explanation of the Base Game and its 4 main Expansions.
Curious why you say not to get the 5-6 Player Extensions though, you kinda just glossed over that fact.
One thing about E&P is that is CAN be combined with C&K. It even has limited compatibility with with T&B. Though E&P + SF is a resounding NO. All other combos are on the table, the website even has instructions to help.

5-6 players is just too long and chaotic a game. This is meant to be a quick 60 minute affair, I've seen 5-6 player games take 2+ hours easily.

I only played Catan for the first time a couple of years ago so I was certainly late to the party. I loved the game and went out to get myself a copy. I recently got the 25th Anniversary edition as well. I have got Seafarers but I haven't played that expansion yet. I also did get Starfarers which I do love. I would really like to get Cities & Knights
I'd love seafarers, no matter how many new board games I introduce to my Wife, she always requests more Catan! Totally agree it still fills a role other games don't.

Had base catan for years and still love it. I think explorers will add enough to bring it to the table more regularly.

Grew up playing Catan and Seafarers and Cities & Knights. Very helpful figuring out what expansions I want now as a friend of many non gamers I think I’ll go Seafarers then maybe Traders.
Hello. I've only be gaming properly for just over a year and I've already got myself a nice collection going. Took me a while to take the plunge on Catan but I'm glad I did. It fast became a family favourite and I'm glad I got the 25th anniversary edition. Out of the ones you have I would like either seafarers or cities and knights. I've always been reluctant to buy an expansion for Catan as worried how it will affect the game play we enjoy as family so much but this would be an excellent opportunity for us try one and who knows, might lead us to buying them all. Thanks for all the great content. Peter
Catan is still a great game! Would love to add the Seafarers expansion, i like the idea of the water and boats and big random maps! Great video Luke.
Roll dice, get random things based on the roll, trade things you've gotten with other players, collect sets through that trade to build things to improve your position.
I've just described... Monopoly.
But people actively try to ignore the trading in Monopoly ;-)
Love Zatu, can highly recommend. Would love to try Traders and Barbarians. Fisherman variant sounds fun.

Unfortunately, I've only played Catan once, and while I liked it a lot my wife didn't like it (hoping she will like Rivals for Catan and I can use that as a gateway back to the full game w/ 3+ players). Explorers & Pirates looks the most interesting to me with all of the varying types of additions.

Luke and Zatu make me winner! For me, I'd have to go with Catan the base game. Reasons, it's a catan - strophe that my family have never played it. Not sure how this has happened as we've tried many family titles, play games weekly with our own gaming group and regularly buy games (usually one a month). I think as we watch many reviews before we buy a game, this one has always gone under the radar. Oh well, if we're not lucky this time it looks like this is the one game we are destined to miss out on, let's hope this never happens... finger crossed 🤞. Thanks for an interesting overview of Catan and its variants. For me Seafarers seems like the obvious expansion to refresh the game without adding too much complexity and take full advantage of the flexibility of the he's map.

Look Luke - I love your love for this game. I sent this link to my daughter in Germany, because she loves Catan even more than you! My first and only play was a miss for me, BUT I made a conscious choice of falling in LOVE with Catan's time-brother (or sister) Carcassonne. This sits in my top-10 (with all its expansions) next to more modern games. I love your show as always

I own the base game but don’t play very often since you need 3 players. I would like to get Explorer & Pirates expansion that can be played by two and by your description it sounds very interesting.
Castles and Knights would be my choice. We have the base game and also Seafarers but we are now looking to expand. Castles and Knights is the natural next choice. I love the idea of the extra complexity.
Traders and Barbarians please! Thank you for the video Luke, I enjoy Catan too - it was my re-entry to boardgames 10+ years ago and have found it to be a reliable game to hook new players.

Cities & Knights is the one expansion I want as it's the only expansion I don't own - And I think more rules is what I would want from the game at this point! ^^ I actually really loved Explorer's and pirates - but yes as you say, complete stand alone but a very fun experience the first time you go through all the scenarios.
I've played the original Catan once with a friend, and it was great fun. Would love to have a copy of it to play with new friends

I've only played Catan once and really enjoyed it. So, I would love to have it in my collection.
I dont own the base game, but am rethinking that and will probably buy it soon. Our gaming group is growing with lots of new people coming in who have never played any board games. Catan is great for beginners. Plus I think it would be a good game for me to start teaching. The expansions make it look a lot more interesting
Our family still loves Settlers of Catan. Yes I still call it that because that is what my boxes all say. We pulled it out again last night and played a five player game. It is has been a staple game in our home for over 15 years and one we go back to a few times a year. My personal favorite is to play with Seafarers with the exploration. CATAN!
Seafarers is imo a necessity, I've only ever played base game alone only once and was teaching 2 of the 4 players and endlessly found myself excusing the problems we had by stating that those problems aren't present when playing with the SF expansion. Also, while I wouldn't recommend playing with 5 or more players I would say that a 5-6 player seafarers expansion is a decent purchase in order to play 4 players on an even bigger map with more exploration possible and more islands to visit etc. For the giveaway I would like Traders + Barbarians expansion to simply add the extra options to expand on Seafarers further (clearly I just like the sea exploration side of things!)

Catan was the first modern game we ever got, after watching an Edinburgh Fringe show about board games. We love the base game but I think we're ready to progress to the next level with the Seafarers expansion.
I would pick seafarers expansion. Funnily enough me and my husband we talking the other day we hadn’t played Catan for ages and thought about diving back in and this expansion looks interesting. Also a friend of ours who has just started playing games picked up Catan but hasn’t played yet so would be fun to play with them.

I would pick Catan! I’ve never played this game, honestly it’s one I’ve overlooked mainly due to the art.. but as a total classic I would love to at least try it. I have a vague childhood memory of seeing this in our family loft, but either we don’t have it anymore or just never played it 😂 Thanks Zatu & Luke 👍🏻

Cities and Knights is next on our list! It will add some more variety but also means we can then progress to Treasure, Dragons and Adventure.
Love Catan. My gateway to the hobby and still loves it, as does the family. Don't get the hate. Catan is the Nickelback of board games. Both get an undue amount of hate, but somehow still continuing to succeed and entertain a good amount of people

Catan is a classic - I love Cities & Knights expansion. We have made it more interesting with some change in house rules and adding bit of new own created scenarios. This is a great game to play anytime and great gateway game.

I actually never played Catan, it requires 3 players, who knows that many people? That's crazy. But Catan Rivals is really good and still holds up.
Question for future giveaways: is it possible to participate if winner, outside of UK, pays for shipping?

I'm in the USA so I'm out. However I actually like Catan at 5. The extra building phase introduces more considerations during trading and helps mitigate those nasty 7 rolls. In order my preferred player counts are 3, 5, 4 then a large gap to 6.
Catan was one of my gateway games and although I have since played other games I like more, I still enjoy it now. I have only played base game Catan but the expansion I am most interested in is Seafarers as it doesn't seem to add too much complexity and can still be taught to new players. I also like the idea that it makes the sheep more useful!
Seafarers is fab (I say this as someone who has only played this expansion as a two-player)

I’d love seafarers, my group absolutely loves Catan - no matter how many new and exciting games I buy they always request Catan at the end of the night. Seafarers seams like the right level of complexity for them
I had fun with the base game on my first play. Then the following games were just no one wanted to trade until there was a clear #1, then everyone wanted to trade #2 to sabotage #1. Definitely wasn't for me, every game felt like it drug on if you weren't in 1st or designed comeback player.
I'd like to win the base game Catan, i have played the game before but not for many years since i was at university. I enjoyed my time with the game especially the trading aspect, also I have never played the expansions but I like how you went through each one, i think id go for seafarers as the first one to get after the base game.

If I'm lucky enough to win, I would very much like to receive Catan (base game) please. Why? Because it's considered a classic, I've never played it and it sounds like an excellent gateway for me to introduce friends of mine to boardgaming.
The base game is okay when you start playing, but soon goes stale. It can be fun, but more often than not is is frustrating for one or more of the players when the dice just don't work for them. I have no idea why it is still so popular. At least in Trek Catan the crew cards add enough spice to make it more fun.

I would like Seafarers. I think adding complexity to this one kind of defeats the purpose of who this game is intended for
I personally think 5-6 is ok with base and seafarers, but beyond that it’s too much. 4 is the best tho. I think Seafarers is the number one expansion to get, next i would say traders and barbarians because it adds a lot of small things that doesn’t make it overly complex. Cities and pirates are both too much for this type of game and I’d rather play something else.
Catan + Seafarers is my preferred Catan. It rounds out the rough edges of the base game while keeping it's core structure intact.
I've never played catan, but explorers and pirates sounds interesting. I think after watching this video that it might be worth giving a try with the Explorers and pirate expansion. Just because it makes it sound more interesting than base catan.

Base Catan just sucks compared to modern games. The worst possible type of randomness, where you get punished and literally can't do anything. Turns where you lose resources because of a roll or do nothing are not fun. Randomness that offers multiple choices like Castles of Burgandy is vastly superior. Catan might be good with expansions but the base game design is painfully dated these days.
Catan is my new Monopoly. Very outdated game. Would rather play something else.
