As a metal guitarist myself i cant agree more. I love metal core and old school thrash like Metallica and i think Josh's style is the perfect baby between modern and old school metal absolutely amazing guitarist. His Gallop Riffs are just down right nasty and really shows that even in E Standard you can be Heavy AF.

I've been listening to Sylosis for a couple years now, and they've quickly turned into one of my favorite bands. This definitely has some similar flares to some of their earlier work, but yet still different. If you want to check out some of their older works (which I HIGHLY recommend you do), some of their better songs are Teras, After Lifeless Years, Empyreal, Behind the Sun, Servitude, Mercy, and To Build a Tomb. Kind of a long list, I know, but as someone who's never listened to Sylosis, you've got a bit of catching up to do. I promise, you will not be disappointed.

This is definetly one of my favourite bands, maybe on the 3rd or even 2nd place (Pantera can't be replaced imho).
Sylosis give me goosebumps every time i listen to them, I feel like I'm in winter woods somewhere in northern Europe, expecially in parts like in 5:04, with ambient melodies in background.
and they play ALWAYS in standard E, and they are genius, because they can thorw out really dark and "fake low" chords (they use a lot inverted power chords). And expecially Josh (the lead guitarist and singer) uses a lot of minor scales in the style of Chuck Shuldiner, and a lot of riffs cames from death metal(expecially from Death influence) mixed with trash, groove metal, and i think almost every old styles of metal.
Did I mention how much I love them??

  • @ksteenkamp2466
    @ksteenkamp2466 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I like how you technically analyze the song, but songs also carry an emotional message which is often overlooked and needs to be considered along with the breakdown of the technical aspects.
The song is about separation between two people (Fare thee well my ally). There's anger, sadness and it comes across really well in the music as well as the the way the video editing was done. He walks away from the mike at the end which is a powerful symbolism of leaving someone/something behind who previously meant a lot. Amazing song and Metal Musicians rating and breakdown is spot on!

Saw them on tour with LoG back in 2012 and was blown away! Been a fan ever since. Their song ‘What Dwells Within’ is one of my favorites. Heavy. I would say this song ‘I Sever’ is a solid combination of all of their albums.

Their album Conclusion of an Age, in my opinion, is by far their best. The old singer is doing lead for Heart of a Coward and they rip too!

That solo was up there with the likes of John Petrucci in terms of how cleanly executed it was, Josh is a super talented guy! I also had never heard a Sylosis song before now either, so I will definitely be checking out more of their stuff. Chunky RIffs need to be a thing by the way Nik... Gojira should just about cover the whole series! 👍

Such a sick band! Josh is an insane lead guitarist and a great vocalist as well - his pitched screams are cool. I think he should do more backup vocals in Architects with their future material... it would go great with Sam's voice! I was stoked when I found out he joined Architects, cause Sylosis is one of my older favorite bands, and Architects is a band I came to love much later on. I was also a little surprised because stylistically the two bands are so much different.😂
I first discovered this band like 10 years ago when I was just starting high school. It blew me away to find out all of their songs are in E standard, when I first got into them. Their old album, Conclusion of An Age got me hooked, mostly due to Josh's nice guitar work and the catchy melodies. They had a different vocalist back then, before Josh took on vocal duties. The old vocalist is in the band Heart of a Coward, and they're pretty awesome too.
They are definitely one of the best examples of riffs in standard being super heavy imo (along with Opeth). Lol
I suggest you check out more of their discog! You should check out the crazy sweep section in their song Empyreal!

In their album, Monolith, they did a lot of ambient things. Paulstretchy type things.

So they actually wrote the album in 2016. Then went on hiatus when josh joined Architects full time. Josh is my favorite guitarist. I think you'll enjoy their song, Kingdom of Solitude.
What I love about him is his solid technique in lead and vocals.
Their vocalist actually ditched the band back in the day, and he basically taught himself vocals in like 6 months.
I was thrilled that Josh got to make it big with Architects, but basically got moist when I heard they're back!
Josh mostly plays in E Standard. He has a way of palm usage that just makes it sound like it's not E Standard. I haven't seen a lot of guitarists do that.
He just has a hella solid foundation when it comes to guitar.

Josh Middleton (vox, lead) is one of my biggest inspirations, the guy is crazy good at everything he does. I bought a limited signed print off him a while ago, he handled that nicely. He also popped up to me on facebook to help me out with a faulty download of his solo album (on his birthday), I could talk about how great this guy is for hours.
As for music, I believe their magnum opus is Edge of the Earth, it's a conceptual, proggy album with tons of variety. They don't usually touch on longer songs, but EotE has them and it's amazing. If you like the melodic harsh vocals like at the end of this song, this album is an excellent choice. Can't believe you've never listened to them before

Sylosis have no weak solos. No weak songs, basically. They're amazing live, as well, I had the chance of seeing them in 2011 and they delivered a great performance, just as I expected them to. Awesome band. If I was to suggest what you should to check out next, I'd say Empyreal and Teras first, and then everything else they've put out.
