As a person who doesnt live to far from there i can assure you its not the height or lack of it that makes our tiny mountains dangerous, its the weather, the pub up there has saved more lives of unsuspecting tourists and hikers than you would ever believe. It changes in seconds.

Very interesting view of the stone walls and the reason for constructing them, Thanks, Rick!

Not only in Cumbria , come to Scotland and you’ll see them everywhere , it was also a way of using stones from the fields after ploughing .

There's a really good old pub on Kirkstone Pass, one of the highest in England. It's a former coaching inn. I hope you stopped by!

Reminds me of the thousands of miles of stone walls in the northeastern states of America.

I lost a rear view mirror on one of those stone walls. those roads are really freaking narrow, especially when there's another car coming toward youy.

Road is so narrow in UK !

That is actually quite wide for a rural road! In rural areas, there are plenty of narrow roads where there is only room for one car so you have to reverse back if you meet another car!

The “Inclosure Act” had controversial aspects as well. Rich landowners were able to take over, by force if necessary, what was previously public common land leaving poor people with nothing.

I can't imagine riding a bicycle on this road but I guess people do it.

    • @Beery1962

I spent a year and a half riding on roads just like this throughout Europe. It's perfectly safe. It's not like America where motorists and speed are prioritized. In many places in Europe, if a motorist hits a cyclist, the motorist usually has a lot of explaining to do. Unlike the US, you can't hit a cyclist and then expect to get off with a warning. So drivers tend to be a lot more careful.

They certainly do. I have a friend who helped pull a car up there once too, for charity. Ouch.
