In my musically uneducated opinion, Rich is a more impressive drummer, but Krupa's drumming is somehow more "musical" to my ears.
I’m loving Buddy’s Rogers kit. Krupa was FIRST rock star! 👍🏻 But Buddy was probably a better drummer, and quite possibly the GOAT. I liken it to Neil Peart being a superior technician to Bonham (and ultimately a better drummer), but I still love Bonham’s playing and feel he is one of the greatest rock drummers.
Krupa was dating Marie Allison and he pointedly asked her who she thought was the better drummer of the two. She reluctantly admitted she thought Buddy was better. Not long after, she started dating Buddy and became his wife in 1953.
I'm not qualified to judge between them. I'll say the audience won.
Although both drummers were my idols growing up and learning to play and both were great drummers, Buddy definitely took this one!
The thing is that the battle was slightly unfair. Buddy Ritch, in an interview, said Gene is a good friend of mine, and I had to dumb down my playing in order to not just blow him away.
Personally, I think Buddy Rich is better at drumming, but Gene Krupa is the better drummer.
Gene was older in this performance and had slowed down quite a bit because of heart and other health issues. Buddy was always a technical drumming icon, and Gene was more of a musical, swinging type of drummer. Each had very unique talents, but Gene was definitely not at the top of his game for this performance.
If this was a battle of fiddles for a soul against a fiddle of gold
Krupa would be the Devil and Rich would be Johnny
When you get to a point of excellence, the question "who is better" becomes moot
Fortunate enough to have seen him perform seveal times. Neal Peart from the band RUSH ranked Buddy as the greatest drummer of all time. Rich could not read music, never practiced and didn't even have a set of drums in his home. This info from the book Traps, The Drum Wonder written by his good friend Mel Torme.
In a drum battle between Gene Krupa and Sammy Davis, I'd go with Sammy! GK IS NOTHING!!!!!! He's a nice guy, but he can't do anything. Buddy Rich had to tie one arm behind him just to talent-down to Gene Krupa's level, and Buddy STILL whipped him!!!!!!!!!!
Sammy Davis Jr was a very capabel drummer too
🥁Gene … Is and always be “ King of the drums . Listen & Dancing 🎉 …. If it wasn’t for Gene putting the drums out in the front, Buddy Rich might be … still fighting with Tommy Dorsey 😮
For soul GENE, for technical , BUDDY,both great drummers
I prefer Krupa, I think he’s more musical and a great showman. Buddy is probably better and faster with his technique. Rich had some great big bands going into the 70s, but he was kind of an AH. He demanded perfection, but he wasn’t very nice about it. Some of Fletcher’s character in Whiplash is Buddy Rich, lol.
Sammy is a very good drummer as well. That's Sammy Davis Jr in the background.
Buddy won that battle, but I think whoever goes 2nd wins. You know what it's going to take to win. A lot of the old timers were good drummers. Johnny Carson , Sammy , naturally Gene and Buddy. I'm still hanging with Joe Morello.
Buddy was the best and always let everyone know.
Buddy Rich is a much better drummer than Krupa even though Krupa built a reputation himself. Sammy Davis Jr up there was awesome also!!
Krupa was King man but Mr. Buddy Rich was what all Kings strive to be. Times were sure different back then but still amazing to watch.
To bad Krupa didn’t unleash more tricks he had up his sleeve!
Buddy Rich is the best but Gene Krupa was around before and led the way.
They both are very good the only difference is that Krupa apart hitting drums he still kept melody while Buddy technically went ahead but kind of lost music/melody
Buddy was an excellent drummer but he also conducted and wrote the music. He was quite the perfectionist and performer.
My jazz band instructor used to play alto sax for Buddy back in the day. Cruz Velasco. Rip. He would describe some of the rehearsals, if even one note or one time signature was messed up, they would all pay the price of late night rehearsals until it was perfect.
A true musician, perfection or nothing for that man. He was brilliant!
Sammy Davis JR was in the backgound
Considering this Gene Krupa’s signature song…LOL. But they’re apples & oranges.
Buddy wins on speed but Gene on musicality
I watch this and always notice how Buddy doesn't really get much applause. Gene Got it with his performance.
Love em both!
Even had a chance to meet Gene a long time ago.
Buddy rich took that hands down!
Gene Krupa for cryinng out loud!
Buddy will never be beat. 😮😮😮😮
Both great.
Gene was a much nicer guy, Buddy was a far better drummer.
Gene Kruger my favorite
Yeah yeah right that's why you say Kruger instead of his real Lastname, which is Krupa
For me, Buddy Rich is clearly the better drummer in terms of technique, but Gene Krupa has a better sense of swing rhythm and timing. I listen to and watch Buddy Rich in awe, but I enjoy more listening and tapping my feet to a swinging big band with Gene Krupa leading the rhythm section.
That being said, as good as Gene Krupa was as a swing drummer, I think he is second to Chick Webb.
In the 1930s, William Henry "Chick" Webb became one of the best-regarded bandleaders and drummers of the new "swing" style.
Buddy Rich cited Webb's powerful technique and virtuoso performances as heavily influential on his own drumming, and even referred to Webb as "the daddy of them all."
In the 1937 Battle of the Bands at the Savoy Ballroom in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City against Benny Goodman's Band, and in the 1938 Battle of the Bands against Count Basie's Band, Chick Webb's Band won.
After the battle, Goodman's drummer Gene Krupa said "Chick Webb had cut me to ribbons." Count Basie said he was relieved to come away from the contest without embarrassing himself.
Unfortunately, Chick Webb died in 1939 from tuberculosis of the spine (aka Pott disease) at the age of 34.
It would be great if you did a reaction video to a video of Chick Webb's drumming.
I don't think you can compare the two. They were both the greatest for over 3 decades, The styles are very different. From a rudiment aspect. Buddy is the best. But Gene had the entertainment aspect, you could literally watch the music flow out of him. Gene had the ability to become one with the other instruments. You see why Buddy was so pro classical grip? It gives you access to so many more drumming points.
These were never truly drum “battles”, and fortunately these two greats had a tremendous amount of mutual respect.
Krupa had his own style, and pretty much single-handedly created what we know as the “drum set”. Whenever the two got together like this, Gene was basically trying to keep up with Buddy and emulate his style - such as the right-hand rim shot followed by a string of left-hand singles. Buddy’s speed was and is unmatched; Gene had his own thing, which was VERY catchy rhythm and an uncanny knack for supporting the other members of the band with dynamics. In short, I don’t think there was a “better drummer” here, only a faster one and a slower one. Two all-time greats. Love them both !
Oh, so nice to see this drum battle again. Buddy Rich took this one with his power, energy and speed and also his big smile! I recall sometime in the late seventies seeing a drum-off with Carmine Appiece? and Buddy Rich. Carmine had tons of drums and was all over the place on his solos,, but everything Carmine did on his big set Buddy could do + on his four piece set! I’ll never forget it, a great inspiring moment for me, then a young beginning drummer!
Although I love Krupa - No comparison - buddy Rich
yeah, thanks I like this content. well, of course buddy rich won because he's is the better drummer,,, better techniques, better dynamics, better timing, more musicality, more diversity. he learned from listening to Gene Krupa, Louis Belson, Art Blakey etc. AND developed new styles by himself as crash cymbal runs and much more. Buddy's technique incoorperates paradiddles, flawless single stroke rolls etc. which he never stopped practising. // My favorite drummer still is Dennis Chambers on -> Victor Bailey + Dennis Chambers + Mitch Forman + Chuck Loeb + Bill Evans - PETITE BLONDE // or John MacLaughlin 'The Heart of Things' -> unreached concerning complexity of rhythms chords and melodies
Buddy wins on technique, but Gene is my all time favorite drummer. He puts the swing in Big Band music.
Gene was a great showman with moderate skill and I love watching him play. Buddy, however, was also a great showman as well as the GOAT.
Love both. Both are legends, but I prefer Krupa’s style and music slightly more.
Bernard 'Buddy' Rich was s Jewish kid who grew up in Sheepshead Bay Brooklyn and started playing when he was 2.
Buddy
In past performances with each other, Buddy would hold back a little in order to not thoroughly embarrass Gene. Not this time, however.
I've seen separate videos of the two and noticed they both had the same design on their bass drums, a shield with their initials on the inside. Why was this? Did they both used drums from the same manufacturer? I know at sometime they both played Slingerland drums but I also saw Buddy use Ludwig drums with the same logo.
Buddy was definitely the better drummer . He had the fastest hands and in all the years of watching drummers he is still The King
I have been drumming for 60 years I have been fortunate to see both live Buddy several times
My Uncle Bob likes Buddy Rich more than Gene Krupa.
Comparing Gene and Buddy is like comparing apples to oranges.
GENE is the better showman.
BUDDY is the better drummer.
The Gene Krupa story is fabulous, but buddy was the trendsetter.
Buddy Rich easily the winner, hands down !
buddy es de otro planeta
👌🏻
Krupa is less clinical. He’s more organic.
Rich! then Gene Neal then Danny
Who wins? The audience!
I wish the double bass pedal was available for them. I bet Danny Carey enjoys buddy hitting the underside of the crash as I do.
Believe me, two bass drums are better than a double bass pedal
I'm not a mathematics professor but I think they only have one bass each.
Buddy!! Always#1!
Buddy Rich hands down.
Buddy's good friend and fellow drummer, Ellis Tollin, convinced me to buy Rogers. He co-owned Music City in Philadelphia at the time and demoed a set in the store's basement. Best set I'd heard after having shopped around at other music stores listening and playing Gretsch, Slingerland, Ludwig, etc. Also showed me the difference between the Powertone and Dynasonic snare. I spent the extra $50 and loved it.
Buddy took this battle.
Yes. I'll take a lesson from either of them.
Gene
Buddy Rich is a master drummer!! Awesome!!
You forgot Sammy Davis Jr. who definitely had more overall talent than both Krupa and Rich combined and may have been a better drummer than both. Watch this clip and YOU decide.

Gene is an amazing drummer but Buddy could literally beat him with one hand.
I grew up with Zeppelin. John Bonham is my favorite drummer. I feel he was rocks greatest drummer. But I feel the goat of all drummers was Buddy Rich
Gene and Buddy were the best drummers in their generation and probably our generation also
