The audio diaries of Carrie Delaney are one of the most chilling discoveries in Fallout 3. It tells how a school excursion to these caverns (whatever they used to be) became a shelter for all the children, after first hearing, then seeing the nuclear explosion way off in the distance
Your love for fallout 3 is awesome. It may not be as complex and thought-provoking as 1 and 2, or as action-packed as 4 and 76, but Fallout 3 still stands as one of my favorite games of all time simply because even after 1000 or more hours in-game, i’m still learning new things each time I play.
Personally, I attribute the cave fungus reacting to the "strange meat" the way it does as being a potential sign that it's FEV based either being masses of FEV-infected human cancerous growths capable of surviving and multiplying outside of a human body (which can occur with certain types of real-world cancer cells given the right conditions), just FEV-infected fungus, or a mix of human and fungal cells symbiotically growing together like a lichen that were made compatible through FEV (kinda like how some of the super mutants' centuars were made from multiple creatures mixed together in a FEV vat). I mean, they are growing in water relatively close to a major source of FEV but far enough from severe radiation that the kids can pick it to eat later.
Probably well known, but if you tell Knock-Knock your story at her request, you can hear her telling it to other kids. Of course she changed it a bit, to make it sound more heroic. For example if you tell her you allied yourself with Brotherhood, she will say: Durning his journey, our hero created his own army called Brotherhood of Steel, and they rule on the wasteland.

Cave Fungus was eventually displaced by Punga fruit introduced in Point Lookout as the miracle cure for radiation, but as said, that's not in the base game. I bought the DLCs piecemeal as they were released and I remember being annoyed at playing for so long without access to Punga fruit when I first got it.
People in the 1960s: "Alright, class, today we will be experiencing an atomic bombing in our area. I want everyone in the room to put their English textbooks over their heads. These will prevent debris from falling on you and possibly severing your spinal cord or breaking your neck, and they will also prevent any bombs from disintegrating you in 0.02 seconds upon impact because of the textbooks' high quality shielding technology. Everyone stay calm, while I have another bottle of Jim Beam."

I think fallout 3 was supposed to take place 20 years after the great war, that's why there's pre war food everywhere and places like little lamplight are still a thing
btw the dog in mad max is an australian blue heeler(actually has quite a little heartwarming backstory to him) while dogmeat in fallout is a german shepard

The dog from Mad Max is a blue heeler but Dogmeat, at least in Fo4 is a German Shepherd.

Dogmeat isn't always a german shepherd though, in fallout 3 he's a blue heeler (based on the dog from mad max 2)
