During sword and shield era, I saw people say the only thing worth collecting is xy era or older. Now the scarlet and violet is here, it’s the only thing worth collecting is sun and moon or older. So yeah, I’m pretty sure that after these sets are 5-10 years old they will be going up in value pretty much the same as every other collectible. What Pokémon needs to do is. Release another movie every generation with the biggest names at the time (like they did with Ryan Reynolds) to keep interest with kids up

Hey Rudy, I listened to your whole video and for me personally finances have been much tighter in the last couple of years and last year there was some major opportunities (not just Pokemon or tcgs) that I unfortunately missed out on simply due to a lack of resources. I don't have regrets because it is what it is, and when you got a family to care for it just takes priority. BUT, if I had resources I would have bought (and likely continue to buy) a number of different things. I have some Pokemon products/singles that I have had to let go of to help pay for things at times in the last year or so and I looked through all my options and selected items I was willing to let go of that had appreciated in value for the most part. Some things I ended up taking a small loss on, but that's just life for you.

I couldn't sell my chilling reign booster boxes on ebay for even $130 shipped as of June this year. Even if I could have, $90 buy in, then $130 on ebay, then $8 shipping, then 13.25% seller's fee, and I'm looking at a true selling price of $104.78, or 16% return over two years. 8% return per year. I'm getting more than half that with no risk from my online bank account right now. I also can't take advantage of economies of scale like you can. 2. cryptocurrency.

Rudy you ran your original sale 2 boxes at $249.00, 5 boxes at $599.00. The only time you had another sale on those was NEW YEARS DAY 2022. If you're wondering why no one bought it: You did eventually put it on the monthly list for the same price 3/$284 @ $94.66, 6/$539 @ $89.83. But didn't buy because... you weren't the cheapest price and those places didn't need me to commit to buying 3-6. Smoke and Mirrors had it for $79.99 and that was before they charged state sales taxes. That's why I personally never bought any of them after the initial sale.
Also vintage Pokemon cards are taking a dive... like average down 60% across the board and 20-30% down on vintage booster boxes, except for super rare sets like Skyridge.
I'm holding everything I have until it makes the news again. In the meantime I'll piece together the sets I have, and continue to pick up anything on sale.

S&V and Paldea is being sold at a ton of places for below 105 and seen as low as 90 a box. Y trying to sell at 109 is tough when it’s available for a lot less

I am a patron and I bought one of your two sales of chilling reign but I’m not sure which one. Honestly missed out on the other sale because I was running out of storage space for all the Pokémon/MTG I have bought from you.
I really do think a big part with the shift was the backlash the scarlet and violet video games got. Literally some third grade effort graphics and bad designs hurt the reception of the new era. Also the change in rarities for me was very strange decision becasue nobody really asked for it and just caused confusion at first at still is for most.
In the games it’s also the first that had the more”western” censorship and “ESG” elements in story and character design. I know a percentage of people also dropped it due to that even in Japan.
Pretty spot on, only X factor is Pokémon that owns the printer now and have put more in circulation. How much more compared to the collector/player base idk. How much will it effect the appreciation?

I didn’t catch on to what Evolving Skies would be until it was too late. Even if I had, I could have only afforded a couple cases. So… I think only a handful of investors can afford a 600k investment, and many of us just don’t have the financial cushion to take these long term risks. Sword & Shield in my eyes is only the best because of what kind of time it was in. the Covid-19 pandemic, everybody was either remote working or isolated, thats when the megafans came out (nothing wrong with being a megafan) and decided to come out of the woodwork and buy up everything while they had the time to do it.

16:22 I look at the value of the singles over a couple of years and then I'll buy. Resources are always going to be a factor for the avg collector/investor, and that brings around more filters on the scanner. I don't like that almost everything is open to reprint... dilution hurts the market overall and only truly benefits the manufacturer. That being said, I'm long Pokeballs and Magcians.
I'm much more of an operator than an investor, I just don't have the elemental makeup to hodl. So it's really difficult for me to buy sealed and keep it sealed, or even to invest in single speculations and hold them. I like to either buy and open or buy collections and break them down, so most of my resources goes into that. Which means I usually don't have a big pile of cash ready to sink into a relatively small potential return like sealed cracking arbitrage, even at your prices Rudy. Thanks for what you do though, keep up the good work.
Hey Rudy! I am patron, personally I was going through moving expenses so thats why. I am actually doing something you disagree with. Been buying the old psa 9 holos. I know you don't like looking at pokemon singles but its the equivalent of buy raw alpha mtg, or arabina knights mtg. If you ever get a chanse of buying psa 10 neo, team rocket holos, etc. You should consider it.
The reason I don't buy new Pokemon is that I only collect first generation pokemon cards, meaning nothing printed after 2000. Not even reprints of the old cards.
I'm having so much fun with FAB right now. Market is crazy, it's getting harder and harder to find the older stuff already, stocking up on newer stuff now need to make a more modern FAB deck now.
Pretty sure the speed of the recent spikes were debt fuelled (greed) and now everyone (including some of the big stores) are doing a firesale. And given they now have cashflow issues and debt service charges coming up, they have to liquidate at bad levels. So lets those people take the losees on their inventory and after the fire sale the price will normalise and start growing again. No point chasing the bottom with those that have obligations if you dont have the same obligations.
Started holding a box of every set in xy. A case of each in sun and moon. 5 cases of each of swsh. Plan to do 10 each of scvio. I figured it this way...my money in a bank..not growing very fast..my money sitting in cardboard, it's raising without doing anything to it. It's a no brainer
Former Patron but around the time you were selling chilling reign at 89 a box i was buying cases around 500 shipped over facebook when several people were liquidating it. bought about 3 cases and still holding to this day.
I can't speak to pokemon, I only collect a tiny bit of vintage. But in regards to seeing Pokemon & MTG taking big hits, I think magic is a lot more than just rising cost and economic factors. I'm 100% out of buying new MTG after 20+ years of collecting and playing. There are always ups and downs in the market between years but what has me concerned for the longterm viability of the game is their policy around powercreep. They used to ban cards that were overperforming in a format, but they've changed that with LOTR. Their messaging around cards like the one ring is its fine because it's colorless and fits in all decks (another auto-include in some formats like sol ring in commander, removing player choice) and in regards to Orcish Bowmaster destoying 1 drops, even top tier cards like Ragavan, their response is they're designing more 2 toughness creatures. There has always been some powercreep over the years, but it feels like they care less and less about it now so long as it sells new product. In fact it feels like they are using it to sell new product, If they continue to push forward down this path, it's going to destroy the viability of most of magics most historic and iconic cards, and ruin the power and value of peoples decades old collections in the process. They want a future where everyone feels pressured to buy the newest thing to stay relevant, and it's going to push out most of the eternal format players because of it, including commander, the most popular format in the game.
Your exact video is what I’ve been trying to explain to my friends for months. I keep telling them, if you can get a booster box for like $90 now (which is close to what paldea evolved has been at) you can hold for 4 years and even if the price only hits msrp, that’s still almost a 50% investment return before figuring in fees, shipping etc. That’s a lot higher return than most stock or bond investments over that period of time. Multiply that by like a case of booster boxes and it cuts down on shipping and other fees
To answer your question - at the time the people on the intrawebs were saying there was big print quality issues - also every cardboard pusher was dumping their CR - it was everywhere - I think CR was the cheapest i ever seen a BB. Also ES was the next set up which also went unnoticed in lieu of celebreations a month or so later. celebreations seem to run forever and when it was fading ES got noticed and CR was forgotten. i don't know if the above is right, or care, but sounds about right.

I pick and choose my collectibles based on what I personally like. Don't like Pokemon, don't like MetaZoo. They can go to the moon but I'm just not interested. Hopefully someone reads this. I would've loved to be able to buy all SWSH era booster box cases. However I am young, broke and cannot do such a thing. I am not taking using credit to make purchases, and as a result had to budget and make plays wisely. By the time I had enough money to buy multiple cases of chilling reign, the sale had ended :( . Now, as I believe in the strength of SWSH era, I look to purchases Japanese high class sets in bulk. I am interested in SV Era product, and I'm hoping they do not rise in price significantly any time soon, and that within the next 12-18 months I can purchase a few cases.
I didn't buy any chilling reign because I don't need more bulk pokemon cards. I would end up spending more money on sealed product than I would spend on the singles I want. I think people were hoping that booster boxes were going to get opened by stores and prices on singles would come down.

If you think about it, keeping a box bought at 90, that box will eventually build in value. Prices usually go up about 3% a year, which os why you should get at least a 3% raise. So just holding them for several years, the price of the box will rise. Even the worse set in magic, Fallen Empires is at 500 a box now. Back in the day you could have bought it for dirt cheap.
Yeah but the difference is if you spend money to wait on something to be worth more money and it takes years to do it unless you can buy a warehouse full of cases like this guy is really not much money in it when you compare it to the amount of time it takes to accrue versus how much money you can make using that same amount of time doing something else

I want team up and xy / sm / swsh booster boxes because i don't have cards in there. I have multiple master sets of scarlet and violet - every set so far is too easy to pull everything. Why would someone pay $400 for a booster box of SV in the future when the cards are essentially all bulk?
It was garbage pull rates for the first couple sets. The market value of the hard to pull cards started to raise in value. There was then a higher demand for these sets to chase the high value cards. Pokémon interest is still there, more Pokémon content creators than ever. People wasted a lot of money opening products chasing these alt arts and are spending a lot of money pre-ordering pokemon 151. SV base, Paldea and obsidian flames are the sets stuck in the middle. It’s more timing then anything.

With so many sets of mtg plus new card games...if I don't have enough Intel I'm not blindly buying. Every mtg box I bought ( besides like 3 ) in 5 years I put in my closet or pantry. I'm not addicted to open nor to stay. I'm indifferent. Futher note I had grad school. So I casually bought, but not opened. Pokémon I'm not versed in the game. I surmise most your viewers are not either, but buy not relying on Intel or knowledge but HOPE ( keyword ) for investment. That's my answer man.
I like the heavy bags in S&V. I had to it easy on Mr.P simply bc of obsidian and 151 was fast. But if i knew about you prior I would went broke on 89 shipped CR and live in poverty til it climbed
For me I just didn’t have the funds. I was buying FAB and Metazoo and MTG. Pokemon for me, left a bad taste in my mouth when it came to 2020-2021 people raising the entry price. I wanted $99 boxes of Pokémon and at launch it was $150 for a lot of pre orders.

Wasn’t a patron at the time of CR release but did just buy up SV base at 525/case shipped and PE 540 shipped. Not enough resources to buy another if you offer them. 😢

I am a patron and I bought one of your two sales of chilling reign but I’m not sure which one. Honestly missed out on the other sale because I was running out of storage space for all the Pokémon/MTG I have bought from you.
I really do think a big part with the shift was the backlash the scarlet and violet video games got. Literally some third grade effort graphics and bad designs hurt the reception of the new era. Also the change in rarities for me was very strange decision becasue nobody really asked for it and just caused confusion at first at still is for most.
In the games it’s also the first that had the more”western” censorship and “ESG” elements in story and character design. I know a percentage of people also dropped it due to that even in Japan.

So… I think only a handful of investors can afford a 600k investment, and many of us just don’t have the financial cushion to take these long term risks. 16:22 I look at the value of the singles over a couple of years and then I'll buy. Resources are always going to be a factor for the avg collector/investor, and that brings around more filters on the scanner. I don't like that almost everything is open to reprint... dilution hurts the market overall and only truly benefits the manufacturer. That being said, I'm long Pokeballs and Magcians.
I'm much more of an operator than an investor, I just don't have the elemental makeup to hodl. So it's really difficult for me to buy sealed and keep it sealed, or even to invest in single speculations and hold them. I like to either buy and open or buy collections and break them down, so most of my resources goes into that. Which means I usually don't have a big pile of cash ready to sink into a relatively small potential return like sealed cracking arbitrage, even at your prices Rudy. Thanks for what you do though, keep up the good work.
Hey Rudy! I am patron, personally I was going through moving expenses so thats why. I am actually doing something you disagree with. Been buying the old psa 9 holos. I know you don't like looking at pokemon singles but its the equivalent of buy raw alpha mtg, or arabina knights mtg. If you ever get a chanse of buying psa 10 neo, team rocket holos, etc. You should consider it.
The reason I don't buy new Pokemon is that I only collect first generation pokemon cards, meaning nothing printed after 2000. Not even reprints of the old cards.
I'm having so much fun with FAB right now. Market is crazy, it's getting harder and harder to find the older stuff already, stocking up on newer stuff now need to make a more modern FAB deck now.
Pretty sure the speed of the recent spikes were debt fuelled (greed) and now everyone (including some of the big stores) are doing a firesale. And given they now have cashflow issues and debt service charges coming up, they have to liquidate at bad levels. So lets those people take the losees on their inventory and after the fire sale the price will normalise and start growing again. No point chasing the bottom with those that have obligations if you dont have the same obligations.
Started holding a box of every set in xy. A case of each in sun and moon. 5 cases of each of swsh. Plan to do 10 each of scvio. I figured it this way...my money in a bank..not growing very fast..my money sitting in cardboard, it's raising without doing anything to it. It's a no brainer

I can't speak to pokemon, I only collect a tiny bit of vintage. But in regards to seeing Pokemon & MTG taking big hits, I think magic is a lot more than just rising cost and economic factors. I'm 100% out of buying new MTG after 20+ years of collecting and playing. There are always ups and downs in the market between years but what has me concerned for the longterm viability of the game is their policy around powercreep. They used to ban cards that were overperforming in a format, but they've changed that with LOTR. Their messaging around cards like the one ring is its fine because it's colorless and fits in all decks (another auto-include in some formats like sol ring in commander, removing player choice) and in regards to Orcish Bowmaster destoying 1 drops, even top tier cards like Ragavan, their response is they're designing more 2 toughness creatures.
There has always been some powercreep over the years, but it feels like they care less and less about it now so long as it sells new product. In fact it feels like they are using it to sell new product, If they continue to push forward down this path, it's going to destroy the viability of most of magics most historic and iconic cards, and ruin the power and value of peoples decades old collections in the process. They want a future where everyone feels pressured to buy the newest thing to stay relevant, and it's going to push out most of the eternal format players because of it, including commander, the most popular format in the game.
The only thing stopping me from collecting as much as I'd like to is money 😅

Your exact video is what I’ve been trying to explain to my friends for months. I keep telling them, if you can get a booster box for like $90 now (which is close to what paldea evolved has been at) you can hold for 4 years and even if the price only hits msrp, that’s still almost a 50% investment return before figuring in fees, shipping etc. That’s a lot higher return than most stock or bond investments over that period of time. Multiply that by like a case of booster boxes and it cuts down on shipping and other fees
To answer your question - at the time the people on the intrawebs were saying there was big print quality issues - also every cardboard pusher was dumping their CR - it was everywhere - I think CR was the cheapest i ever seen a BB. Also ES was the next set up which also went unnoticed in lieu of celebreations a month or so later. celebreations seem to run forever and when it was fading ES got noticed and CR was forgotten. i don't know if the above is right, or care, but sounds about right.
3yr Rudy Patron here. I didn't buy Pokemon cause I don't like Pokemon. I'm not a store, I don't need to tie money into every dip that comes along. I pick and choose my collectibles based on what I personally like. Don't like Pokemon, don't like MetaZoo. They can go to the moon but I'm just not interested. I can and do make money without a problem playing with products I actually like

I would've loved to be able to buy all SWSH era booster box cases. However I am young, broke and cannot do such a thing. I am not taking using credit to make purchases, and as a result had to budget and make plays wisely. By the time I had enough money to buy multiple cases of chilling reign, the sale had ended :( . Now, as I believe in the strength of SWSH era, I look to purchases Japanese high class sets in bulk. I am interested in SV Era product, and I'm hoping they do not rise in price significantly any time soon, and that within the next 12-18 months I can purchase a few cases.
Idk, I just can't play the TCG market like you, only thing that did worked for me was my old comics.

If you think about it, keeping a box bought at 90, that box will eventually build in value. Prices usually go up about 3% a year, which os why you should get at least a 3% raise. So just holding them for several years, the price of the box will rise.
Even the worse set in magic, Fallen Empires is at 500 a box now. Back in the day you could have bought it for dirt cheap.
Yeah but the difference is if you spend money to wait on something to be worth more money and it takes years to do it unless you can buy a warehouse full of cases like this guy is really not much money in it when you compare it to the amount of time it takes to accrue versus how much money you can make using that same amount of time doing something else

I want team up and xy / sm / swsh booster boxes because i don't have cards in there. I have multiple master sets of scarlet and violet - every set so far is too easy to pull everything. Why would someone pay $400 for a booster box of SV in the future when the cards are essentially all bulk?
It was garbage pull rates for the first couple sets. The market value of the hard to pull cards started to raise in value. There was then a higher demand for these sets to chase the high value cards.
Pokémon interest is still there, more Pokémon content creators than ever. People wasted a lot of money opening products chasing these alt arts and are spending a lot of money pre-ordering pokemon 151. SV base, Paldea and obsidian flames are the sets stuck in the middle. It’s more timing then anything.
I'll answer your question near end of video, I didn't buy bc I didn't have enough Intel on the product. With so many sets of mtg plus new card games...if I don't have enough Intel I'm not blindly buying. Every mtg box I bought ( besides like 3 ) in 5 years I put in my closet or pantry. I'm not addicted to open nor to stay. I'm indifferent.
Futher note I had grad school. So I casually bought, but not opened. Pokémon I'm not versed in the game. I surmise most your viewers are not either, but buy not relying on Intel or knowledge but HOPE ( keyword ) for investment. That's my answer man.

For me I just didn’t have the funds. I was buying FAB and Metazoo and MTG. Pokemon for me, left a bad taste in my mouth when it came to 2020-2021 people raising the entry price. I wanted $99 boxes of Pokémon and at launch it was $150 for a lot of pre orders.
