    Okay I'm just going to say it...this is so much better than what the Travel Channel puts out. You should honestly have your own Television station and just play these 24/7.

    What a wonderful adventure you had! My Dad was among the second Canadian contingent of Peaceeepers who went over to Cyprus in 1965. He made some lasting and profound friendships while he was there, and we ended up going to visit in 1971 as a family. It was such an enchanting experience I will never forget it or the people.
    One of my favourite memories from that trip was in a little restaurant facing Kyrenia Harbour. We had Meza - a seemingly endless parade of small dishes that featured so much variety and so many vibrant flavours that I still drool when I think about the experience. Our hotel in Kyrenia showcased rooms that overlooked the ocean, although we were not exactly on the coast. When my Dad explained that the land we saw across the water a loooong way away was actually Turkey! If the air was clear enough it was common to see the coast so far away.
    When we made our way to either St. Hilarion Castle or Bellapais Abbey (sorry, can't recall which, but I was only 11 at the time( as we climbed to the higher elevations, we found a little food kiosk in the middle of nowhere. It was set up in a trailer that was probably no longer used for travel because the axles were there, but no wheels! We had luscious chunks of perfectly char-cooked lamg served on a fluffy fresh pita. The interesting bit was that when it was time to assemble out order, the woman passed a little boy a plastic colander. He dutifully scoured the hillside for perfect fresh greens. The woman washed them, shook them mostly dry, and sprinkled them generously on the sandwiches. I have never tasted anything that scrumptious since.
    The hotel we stayed in was in Kyrenia, and I think it was called the Mandarin Hotel. The hotelier's wife cooked for guests and she made the most sublime clear mushroom broth. I practically begged for it every might at dinner, and they were kind enough to comply. I think the hotel was blown up in 1974 during a period of increased tensions on the island.
    Quick advisory to foolish children lucky enough to visit the island and relish in the beaches like Six Mile Beach near Kyrenia, yes, the sea urchins you see in the shallow water are alive. No, you cannot bring them home to keep as pets. This I found out the VERY hard way! By the time we arrived back at our home in Germany (Dad was stationed there as a soldier) my "pets" had crossed the river Styx and their decomposing remains made anything in my suitcase unsalvageable!
    If anyone has the chance to visit this exquisite country and its food, culture, people and museums, please do not let anything hold you back. Today I am a 60 year old woman with extensive memories of a place and a people I could never forget! Thank so much for triggering some of my most treasured memories from my childhood!

    Just a bit of interesting info ......... Buffavento stands between St. Hilarion Castle to the west and Kantara Castle to the east forming a protective axis in the Kyrenia mountain range of Northern Cyprus. As both of the other castles are visible from Buffavento, it was used to pass signals between them.

    i just can't with the Turkish and turkish-cypriot flags so prominent hanging there. it's just so painful. i hope you guys had a great time but i also hope you tried to learn a bit of the history of the place you visited and had so much fun in. Just imagine someone who's home is Kerinia (yeah this is the right name) watching this video knowing he can't go back there. To that beautiful place he once called home cause Turkey decided it was theirs to take

      Olivia95 yes try to learn little bit of cyprus history ..lm Turkish Cypriot in 1958s my mother and her 7 brothers and sisters were left with no mother and father as my grand parents were slaughtered on their way from kyrenia to limassol. Grand father is still missing,grandmother has been found in now is south Cyprus cemetery with a number and no name...my uncles and aunts were around the age of 6 months to around 14 years old then.....please do not comment if you don't know the history of the Turkish and the Turkish cypriots. .thanks to UN.we find some of my aunts and uncles as they were made orphans. The properties that Greeks lost is no where near our loss.if Turkey didn't come in 1974 we would also have been like my grand parents.

    • @official_sez9624
      @official_sez9624 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bulenterdogan6159 I completely agree! My grandparents were being shot at as they were running away from Greek Cypriot bullets, luckily they weren’t hurt. Cyprus is the Cypriots which include Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots, although turkey saved us, doesn’t mean the north belongs to them, 🙏, like it’s been 45 years, never forget but when do we move on, when do we find a solution yk? 😕

    Google maps is pretty crazy in Cyprus. One time they led us - like you - onto this narrow dirt track. Luckily, after a bit of gunning it up a steep hill, we met up with a paved road. On the way along that dirt road, however, we came across a huge herd of goats with their bells clanking away and the shepherd leading them. It was a pretty picturesque sight. So I guess I can't complain *too* much about Google maps.
    Ohh...Oh that holloumi did NOT look good. It looked pretty dried out. I hope it wasn't. It would be awful if your first taste of that fabulous cheese was all dry and gross. =( It's meant to be moist and squeak when you chew it. =)
    That meatball was.....sheftalia??? Someone correct me on that one...

    Hello Kara and Nate, just to let you know, the majority of the Historical sites were built by the Greeks, as well as the Cities you've been to, like Kyrenia, etc.. Not sure, how much research you've done about the North? It is an occupied territory by Turkey and not recognized internationally. All the new buildings/hotels, etc.. were built for the purpose of trying to attract the tourist dollars from the Greek side. If you noticed, a lot of the Greek Orthodox Churches have been destroyed or converted to Mosques. The Turks are destroyers of others Religious and Cultural identities. On the other hand the Greeks have not only preserved the Mosques on the Greek side but continuously fund to improve and attract Muslims who wish pray there. Turkish Cypriots, want to join the rest of Greek Cyprus, but are being blocked by the mainland Turks. I know the Turks have paid for this stay for you, but you've lost me due to your ignorance.. I guess money talks for you..

    • @official_sez9624
      @official_sez9624 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bruh I can’t bare to read some of these comment! Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots are CYPRIOTS. Not Turks not Greeks, but CYPRIOTS, yes the north is occupied by turkey due to the fact that they were protecting Turkish Cypriots from genocide by EOKA supporting enosis (union with Greece), the north contains CYPRIOTS, it’s their home too. Both Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots lost their homes and their lives up until 1974 when turkey invaded. Both communities were living and working in peace for over 450 years. Yes it’s occupied by turkey, but all the Turkish Cypriots want is safety, independence freedom and sovereignty, something that the republic already has since 1960, North Cyprus is not recognised by the world, is this fair? We once lived together in the same villages my grandparents speak Greek and Turkish interchangeably, it’s a shame that people dont see the similarities between our communities, it’s a good thing that they are bringing tourism in to the north, the Turkish Cypriots need money too, to survive and have a life. If your anybody is so concerned about the north then stop all the hate against the north and be kinder to ur fellow Cypriots show them that we can live together again in peace. It’s not difficult. Stop reliving the past because it’s been over 45 years, we could talk about mass murder and rape all day in Cyprus, the real question is, how do we move on and reunite both communities again and live in CYPRUS AS CYPRIOTS, no turkey, no Greece, no U.K., no USA

    • @official_sez9624
      @official_sez9624 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You’re an extremely ignorant person, Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots are different from people from our motherlands, for over 450 years, do you think that both communities just abstained from having intercourse with one another, baby religion ain’t that strong lmao, Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots share almost everything in common, except religion. Do NOT call Turkish Cypriots Turks because we are NOT! Get ur facts right

And wouldn't it be cool if we go all out and make this prank last for, let's see - 43 years, 2 months and 16 days with no end to the prank in sight!
