  • Schindler MICONIC lifts, with some camera synchronising.
    Quite unusual to have floors using the alphabet A-Q, but love the way the floors are prepresented using the Schindler 'star-burst' LED displays, where you cannot QUITE get the proper letter shapes!
    Notice how careful I was with pronouncing "FLOOR Q"...!!? :D
    A MASSIVE thank you to George Peier who spent considerable time and effort arranging this.

    This is neat, I love how the controller user interface has that 80s home microcomputer esthetics. As for the resolution, the characters have a 8x8 pixel resolution, with two columns and one row of pixels used for character spacing. There are 32 characters in a row, which gives us the 256 pixels of horizontal resolution, and 24 rows, giving us 192 pixels of vertical resolution, but since it can't do graphics (it's using special characters for car position, etc.), it's more appropriate to call it a 32x24 character display. The output looks to be monochrome composite video, so either that LCD has a composite input, or it's runniong throught a converter box. They keyboard looks to be a generic industrial ASCII keyboard, hard to tell if the communication is parallel or serial, since I can't see how wires are in that cable. This is what I can see as a retro computer enthusiast and IT professional :)

    An awesome elevator system with the microprocessor controller and CRT display plus KB. Just amazing the CGI showing the elevator cab moving on each hoist way, massive geared traction machines and the larger ones for moving beds. Likely 440-480 VAC 3 phase on the controllers. MrMatt filming at a hospital somewhere in the German-speaking part of the world? Interesting.
    But there's more interesting here - the floor numbering, which I have never seen in this part of the world using letters, the keyboards for the lift controller using a QWERTY layout, which is also not common where German is spoken (and therefore also not where Schindler are from).
    I really like the visuals, even if this is certainly newer than the good old days of relays. It looks like the Commodore 64 I always dreamed of getting, but my parents would never buy for me...

    Hi mrmattmrchay I see that you have also seen these beautiful installations located in a hospital that I was also able to see but I did not film them.
    I would like to point out that in many Swiss hospitals the floors are marked in letters rather than numbers which is therefore not so rare in the country.
    At the base these were elevators installed by Schlieren and they probably had the Aconic controls originally, we can still recognize them with their typical Schlieren brand landing doors not to mention the winches (without the motors) which are still original.

    Nice lifts! I wonder, why the floors are not acustically anounced for handicaped people.
    In Linz, Austria, there is a ecclesiastical hospital with such announcements.
    The standard word for floor used by Schindler is "Geschoss", which also means "bullet" in German. So they decided to be peaceful and exchanged it with "Stock" - another word for floor with only a harmless 2nd meaning (stick).
    But now the anouncement is gramatically incorrect declined: 1st floor is announced "ErsteS Stock", correct would be "ErsteR Stock", because German has different endings with different sex. "Geschoss" is neutral and needs ersteS, "Stock" is masculin and needs "ersteR". 2nd = zweites/zweiter, 3rd = drittes/dritter...
    That's similar to English 1th, 2rd, 3nd, 4rd, 5nd floor.
    I always get a grammer-crisis using that lifts. I was very hapy, when my wife quit her job there.

    • @Colaholiker
      @Colaholiker หลายเดือนก่อน

      The lifts installation predates most likely those audio prompts. And unless they are forced by law to add them, I don't think this is going to happen until the lifts see a major upgrade to a new control system that would come with this functionality. Sure, I can see the benefit of having these announcements, but I can also see why a business operating quite a substantial lift system tries to avoid the expense.
      Regarding you being annoyed by incorrect grammar - The city in Germany where I grew up changed the announcements in most of their public transportation from a recorded human voice (initially on compact cassettes, later on solid-state storage) to some text to speech system. And while being correct in terms of grammar, pronunciation of a lot of names was just terrible with this new system. Some announcements just made me want to throw up.

    • @jakewynn
      @jakewynn 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Colaholikerthis is partially true. first of all you are wrong about needing them to be "upgraded". may I be the one to point out that often when they are replaced they actually become worse because Schindler miconic is too good! 9/10 it is a complete and obvious downgrade both in performance and reliabiltiy :(
      secondly, Schindler miconic supports the voice announcements, they just don't have it quipped with it. not to mention that floor announcements can often be "bodged" into older lift logics even very old ones such as relay logics. this is done by tapping into the position circuitry with modern components. this does however result in the voice saying every floor as you pass them.
