@@JF-fx2qv 👍 Spot On. Just finished watching this Master forge an awesome hook. I think I'll go grab myself a cup of coffee right now. Thanks for sharing another great video Black Bear Forge. Stan
Once again John demonstrates his skills and imagination to teach us an array of excercises from drawing down, cutting, shaping, decorating, bending right down to filing and waxing. These kind of projects are perfect to inspire new guys like me and hobby smiths to undertake simple but useful items to both practice on and to open our minds. Thanks John for all you share with us.
Beautiful. Love the "eyes". My wife wonders how you keep your hands so clean. Mine are stained with coal and covered with little burn marks. I told her it is from your years of experience and learning how not to burn yourself and keep your hands out of the coal bin. We really enjoyed the video. Thank you for showing us your work....
Maybe try an old carpenter's trick for getting hands clean. After washing them with soap, take a handful of salt (about a tablespoon, coarse works best) and scrub your hands with it then wash again. Added bonus is that it softens your hands too.
As I do take advice and judge on the effect of the results. You often use the horn to direct the flow of the metal, I have a old double pien hammer , also a 115 # anvil on a sturdy 3 legged table satting on gravel floor. Seems I move metal faster with the well round pien on the center of the anvil. But I always trying all teaching and think maybe different equipment effect the outcome. John Switzer you are my favorite teacher and partly because your safety tips. I have welded 30 years in my garage and a few production years, Brazed and working besides the brazer handle lots of HOT stuff and proud to say no scares and hopefully staying safe Thanks you Sir
Hi John I think every person watching seen a face on the hook . most of my friends like the imperfections on a piece of work they say it shows it is handmade, but may be they are just been nice.
Alway love this site... it is a joy to watch a master craftsman work his magic .. Being an old craftsman myself.. Carry on John.. be safe and we will see you in the next video..
"this bar is a little bit thick" then proceeds to wack it with a hammer. Hahaha I love how you think in terms of what you can do instead of say just looking for a different bar. And I know all about those eyeball punches... Another excellent video my friend.
I just started doing a bit of forging in the last couple months, and then came across your channel. I've watched all of these HoW videos in the last 10 days! I haven't started making any hooks (other projects) but you are quite the inspiration. I've learned quite a bit and I'm looking forward to more... and I'll probably start making some hooks too :D
Hello John been a couple of months since ive been able to watch. Your content is of the up most quality as usual my man. Absolutely awesome. This is my first video and im not stopping until im all caught up!
I find that when I set out specifically to make art, it comes out somewhat contrived. But if I start out with function in mind and then embellish here and there it takes on an artistic feel.
I love hook of the week with my coffee. I do miss the bucket though. I liked it when he showed his thought process as he was deciding what hook to make.
Beautiful chisel work. Eye ball punch is best. Eyes added character to this hook. Awesome 👍👍👍👍👍good u didn't showed end product in starting it kills the suspense.
I really like this one John. I'm going to make a few as gifts for my daughters and daughter-in-laws. I think I will make a face and hat out of the top. Take care and God bless.
That turned out to be quite a nice hook.I've seen you touch mark much less. Did you forget? This turned out to be a great hook of the week. Thanks John!
I generally don't mark hooks, except for the videos because people want to see it done. But no this one didn't get it and its already sold and home with the editor of our local paper. But sometimes things are marled and it just doesn't make the video edit.
I really like this. As you were doing it, I envisioned a deeper hook - where the end of it was nearly to the finial with the decoration on the hook part instead of the shaft - to be used as a curtain tie-back hook. How much harder would it be to do that?
I love your definition of a "simple" "J" hook. If you ever start off with "Today's hook is going to be a bit complicated" I'll skip that video until I've had a lot more practice!!! LOL That hook does look really, really good 👍 I know you've probably noticed the sound problems in this video, I think you might need a replacement mike as this one it cutting out when it's noise threshold is hit. It might just need a new lapel mike, which will be cheaper then replacing the battery pack/transmitter. Not 100% sure though. Keep up the good work 🙂
@@BlackBearForge I know, it's amazing what a bit of creative thinking and some simple tools can do to a really plain and simple project. In this case, the hook looks great! I don't think it needs to go into life as a sample piece either, that hook is ready for a wall! I know there are loads of different things happened with the patern, but it looks good. I just realised that instead of punching a hole for a mouth, you could use a curved chisel to give it a smile instead 🙂
Oh you forgot your touch mark..........Love that project John, looks like some fun to be had. Please would you tell what the name of that tong you were using on this project. Thanks for the hook of the week once again.
The "neck" looks kinda tribal, but the eyes and pointed "hood" looks like it went the other way (if ya know what I mean). Still, all in all, a nice decorative hook. I'll just go with the alien head idea with ya. Edit: now we need a horse head or dragon head hook....
That is a great hook! What would you charge for a hook like that? I am just starting out and I amnot certain on what to charge for certain items that a more elaborate than something that's more simple. The lack of coal dust is probably because he usually uses a gas forge.
Maybe try an old carpenter's trick for getting hands clean. After washing them with soap, take a handful of salt (about a tablespoon, coarse works best) and scrub your hands with it then wash again. Added bonus is that it softens your hands too.
Mostly I avoid coal and work in a propane forge, much cleaner
Realy nice hook.

Idea -gnome hook
Or, for a Christmas/ Yule special, a Santa hook made out of a vhisel sculpted wizard to go along with the gnome hook.
I would like to see a smiley face on it 🙂
I could never have the artistic skill to do what you do but I love watching and learning from your videos! Thanks for sharing
Why don't you try, James Romano? I'm sure you can get it!
I am not artistic, however blacksmithing is as close to art as I get. I do supreme myself sometimes.
I find that when I set out specifically to make art, it comes out somewhat contrived. But if I start out with function in mind and then embellish here and there it takes on an artistic feel.

There is still a bucket, actually about 12 of them. But they are out in the snow.

I think I will be doing some "hookin" this summer.
When people as what I'm up to I usually say "a bit of forgery" but maybe I'll had better say "forgery and hookin', as one does..."
Love it
Its always interesting and helpful

Nice! But no touch mark? Love the hook of the week!

Great work! Did you do something different with the audio?
I really like this. As you were doing it, I envisioned a deeper hook - where the end of it was nearly to the finial with the decoration on the hook part instead of the shaft - to be used as a curtain tie-back hook. How much harder would it be to do that?
Shouldn't be any more difficult, just make sure it is big enough for the amount of curtain that needs to go in.
Thats a big anvil.
I love your definition of a "simple" "J" hook. If you ever start off with "Today's hook is going to be a bit complicated" I'll skip that video until I've had a lot more practice!!! LOL That hook does look really, really good 👍

Its the hook itself that is fairly simple, but what you can add to that simple shape is what can set it apart from the ordinary
