An armadillo uprooted 80% of my beets. So now I buy a pound of red pepper at a time and make my mulch red with it. The armadillo returned and left with a melting nose. The pepper on leaves keeps my wild bunny friend from nibbling too. I planted her some things along the blackberry patch and stopped mowing all the grass and weeds there so she has food.

I left the wild grass tall last year to let the deer have good and stay out of my orange construction fencing I had around my traditional row garden. They eventually jumped over and tore up everything. Corn, pumpkins, melons, broccoli and potatoes. It was so sad.

@@DanlowMusic I had a driveway alarm guarding some seedlings the bunny kept staring at and it went off. I threw open the door and hollered, "BUNNY! NOOOO!" and a deer nearly jumped over the trees. I think she hurt herself when she landed in some vines and small pines. I saw the deer again recently in a nearby field but she hasn`t been back in my yard. There are alarms that make noises and some that squirt water that may scare away the deer.

I’m a Subscriber of 5+ years now this is one of my most important places to watch for gardening information and creativity if how to plant things and trellis them. Plus you tell us plant again, and in succession.

We hope your family doesn’t mind that we listen to you sometimes hours, with the different subjects you publish ( on your app, on our phones) to you and enjoy having you around like you’re one of our family or best friends. Tell them it’s all done in a learning attitude and it’s much better than reading a book to find out what you need.
you are thorough and then go to another thing we should know in the garden also.

I know There are other channels with Gardner’s that grow in land in my zone ‘9b’ but I choose you to watch you.
I enjoy the knowledge you have collected since being taught to garden by your grandpa when you were a youngster. Wonderful to see that you have taught so many people of us ‘the love of gardening’, you have indeed passed it on. You have assisted giving us the ability to grow & feed ourselves somewhat.

FUN FACT: In winter indoors 500 watts of LED lights = 500 watts of heat. So you can use some of your heating to produce food. I have a 15 watt directional Sansi bulb on a tomato plant outside under the edge of my steel camper roof. The plant dwarfs its unlighted companion that depends on sunlight only and is loaded with fruits but the companion just got its first blooms. Companion is in soil but the big one is in a 5 gallon bucket of nutrient solution. I have collards, chard, carrots, okra, southern peas, kale, radishes, cucumbers, purslane, ground cherries, melons, lettuce, mustard greens, peppers, strawberries, blackberries, asparagus and all sorts of things and experiments growing. I added a dozen more fruit trees this year.

I`m trying leeks for the first time and chives and planted store garlic and little red store potatoes to get seed potatoes to grow this fall. They made tiny red potatoes so they must be a strange mini potato. They say the store potatoes won`t produce much but if you plant the ones they do make you`ll get far better production. I got about 4 or 5 potatoes from each one from the store. Rutabagas are delicious and seem more "potato like" cooked than turnips but I grow both. My carrots are under my pole beans and cucumber trellis. I have to save space so I cram things together and just let the plants decide what to do. If they thrive I repeat the method. There are no neat rows in my chaos garden. It`s a jungle. I throw seeds everywhere and stick various seeds in any open spot I see and tiptoe through it all.

You encourage us but are a nightmare to OCD gardeners and their penchant for organizing their garden.
You get results and wonderful food! Congratulations to you. Thanks for encouraging us.
Don’t we have a great teacher in our Gary? He’s the best gardner and encourager I’ve seen.
I live in Central California and he’s in Maine. (You can’t get much farther apart but the information is the same for me just not the bugs that eat our plants) so his bugs are not mine but that’s kinda easy to solve.
Gary, God bless you and your family.

@@bonniebartlow5631 I grew up on a farm but my half sister and her son have never done any of the things I do. My nephew is extremely OCD and was horrified into open mouthed silence when he saw my garden. I`ve tried to get him to grow food but he refuses to listen to any advice because that might confirm that I`m not completely stupid and he needs someone stupid around to elevate himself to the sky. Both of them are control freaks too. They tried to bully me to stop me from getting emergency solar power for my camper with the 2020 payoff because they assume I`m too stupid to build a system. And again...there just can`t be anyone smarter than them around...and I`ve never seen anything like it. (See the show Green Acres...that`s them) But guess who has air conditioning when the power fails over and over here in Louisiana every summer? Ha! And guess who doesn`t? And they called me "crazy" for "wasting my money" on this. I feel surrounded.

I’m new to growing. The store garlic doesn’t grow well, I planted it two years in a row once in spring once in fall, they were puny but they grew. The sprouted potatoes did ok, that was a situation where nothing could have been lost but seed potatoes probably would have produced more.

Rain is in the forecast for late tonight through early Sunday morning. When it breaks, I need to harvest snow peas. I picked my first peppers this morning. The pest presure has come early this year, so as soon as it stops raining, I need to spray with spinosad to prevent pickle worm damage. While spraying, I'll spray my fruit trees, squash, and melons with immunox. My elephant garelic is ready to harvest, the grocery store mystery garlic soon. Some of my potatoes are starting to die back, so I'll harvest it next week, then plant turnips and carrots in their space, or maybe... I'll plant more potatoes. I just harvested mustard a week ago, and it is already ready for a third reaping. Behind it is my Swiss Chard. I have enough shelling peas to add to my salad, and, or, save for seed. Voles devastaded my peas, and extra potatoes. Still no signs of new vole holes or vole damage since deploying the sonic stakes. I can confirm that at least one was eaten by Sneaky Pete. New Zealand Spinach is a great spring through fall spinach. I ate the last of mine last night, and am in the process of replanting more. It will survive a light frost, but not a freeze.
