    OK I think I misspoke - the yellow-ish writing pen is the Zebra Sarasa CLIP pen, one of the vintage colors. ALSO, the paper can have different coating depending on the brand, so always do a thorough pen test! What else do you want to see tested?

  • @superfund42
    @superfund42 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    I don't like Mildliners either. The bullet tips varied in size right out of the package, the chisel doesn't lay down color evenly, and the colors are way more saturated than I wanted them to be. That said, I will probably pick up the newest mild/natural colors because that's what I actually wanted from those pens. As for other pens to test, I would like to see the Zig Clean Color Dot Markers.

    • @RachelleinTheory
      @RachelleinTheory  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      OK THANK YOU. I super agree. I do have my eyes on the natural colors but.... am I ready to be hurt again? 🤔 I don't have any Zig Clean Color Dot Markers YET because they looked a bit too wet for my taste, but I would like to get some soon and test as well!

    • @superfund42
      @superfund42 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@RachelleinTheory They are definitely juicy, but I find that once they dry down, the color spreads out within the dot and is usually very even. Definitely get the real Kuretake brand if you try any out though - the knockoffs don't behave the same way on the Tomoe river paper.

      Could you recommend a brand of pastel and/or natural highlighters? I recently bought the 15 ct pack of the mildliners and was not impressed. I also found them to be too saturated, but I find the gentle set too light and I do not want fluorescent.

    Thank you for this! I like to use fountain pens with ink that has properties that do the coolest things based upon them not absorbing into the paper quickly. So I think the new TRP won’t be as ideal for that. I can see that this change is going to work really well for some though - and it seems like it will be a very positive change for our lefty friends, which is nice.

    • @RachelleinTheory
      @RachelleinTheory  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Totally agree, lefties rejoice! I don't use fountain pens, but others have also said that the inks won't work quite as well! I guess, if you're worried about smearing with the fountain pens, the new TRP will be better, but for fancy inks that do things based on not absorbing... not so much ☹

      @@RachelleinTheory I'm sad about not being able to see the sheen from fountain pens. I should give this a try with fountain pens. Thanks for this! I'm going to be on the A6 Hobonichi Avec, (maybe but probably not) Hobonichi Cousin Avec, and the B6 Sterling Ink Common Planner.

    So basically, for straight writing, new is better. For wetter media like watercolours or blending markers, older is better. Maybe going forward I’ll stick with hobos for planning, but find another option for journaling

    • @RachelleinTheory
      @RachelleinTheory  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think that might be the case, yes. Which is a shame! One of the strengths was that this paper could do both. More thorough tests might need to be done with painting to see what it can really handle though.

    Not a planner but I LOVE the 400 page leather cover tomoe river notebooks made by Galen Leather for creative journalling and memory keeping. Hands down my favourite notebooks in the entire world. Nothing comes close. Back in 2021 when they still had the old TR paper, I bought 6 of them and only started using one of them before I stopped journalling for over a year. Now I’ve just started journalling again and each day that I write (which isn’t even every day) uses at most two pages. Add to that the 4 endless recorder 68gsm TR paper journals I have (not as nice as the Galen leather ones but still amazing). So it will be YEARS before I need to try the new TR paper. I’m super curious though 😅 but I must use what I have first!😊

    Great information and review. Liked how you taped the paper in a planner. I was just doing my own pen test right now and wanted to see some videos. I like the feel of the old TRP - it's smoother feeling. The new feels thinner and more simila to regular paper. I only have a zebra sarasa not dry one and I notice it bled through a bit on the new TRP but does not bleed through on the old one. But I don't use this as it smudges but just one thing I noticed in my swatch test. I mainly use a couple fountain pens, pigma micron and uni jetstream. I like how the pigma micron and uni smudge the least.

    • @RachelleinTheory

      I'm not sure I have watercolor but if I get some I will for sure try! The tombow test is probably the best comparison for watercolor, I thought it warped slightly more and absorbed slightly faster. I think the new paper will crinkle just fine. Hard to know with just a tiny sample but I have faith.

    Wonderland 222 uses Tomoe River paper but not sure what they are doing after 2023. By the way the friction pen in 0.7 is not a good size and you should try a 0.5 or smaller before you can really see how it performs. Unless of course you like the larger link nibs in all types…

    i tested some sheening inks for fountain pens and i would say, the new paper is way more BORING. Inks lose their magic. I would even say other pens like gels, highlighters and brush pens also appear more boring/standard. If you need a super lightweight book, Hobo is good. If you want magic along with it... well... imo it's gone. Also the added toothiness makes writing experience ordinary... 😪💔

      @RachelleinTheory  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @RachelleinTheory
      @RachelleinTheory  ปีที่แล้ว

      Is there anything you like about the hobonichi? I would seek out planner companies with similar features! If it's things like the tiny grid and the tomoe river paper, the options are still kind of spendy, but you can certainly find alternatives, especially undated ones. Aura Estelle (I think), Sweet Freckled Designs, and Sterling Ink come to mind. Also a really common alternative to the cousin is the Wonderland 222. Lots of size options as well! I always recommend Leuchtturm planners too. I love them and they are a little more affordable.
      Others please leave suggestions too!! 🤗

      @RachelleinTheory  ปีที่แล้ว

      A lot of fountain pen users have felt this way I think! I don't use fountain pens much but I watched one test video that said that the writing experience was OK but the ink just looked less nice. I'd watch a couple fountain pen specific vids to be sure, but it does seem to be slightly less good.

    Do you think watercolor will still work on he paper?

    • @RachelleinTheory
      @RachelleinTheory  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think watercolor will absorb much faster on the new paper than the old paper. My tombow dual brush pen test is probably the closest thing I have to watercolor, and it did not blend as well, pilled a bit, and the page crinkled slightly more. However, I don't use watercolor and am not SUPER familiar with it's properties, so this is just an estimation based on water-based markers!
