I am a 66yr old divorced woman. I probably own a drill, some screwdrivers and a hammer etc but I really don’t know why I can’t stop watching Shadow Foam! It’s like an addiction at this point.
My dear British friend, I don't think you know how or what you can do with a "Zollstock" other than measure? That you can use this measuring instrument to mark measurements without getting splinters in your fingers when you run your hand along rough edges, because you can even use the "Zollstock" as a stop with a measuring distance. The "Zollstock" - at least some people have one - can indicate angles; there is an angle scale printed between the joints. And as kitchen and BBQ tongs they are unbeatable and you can even use them to remove the crown cap from a bottle of beer (leverage with a longer arm = physics).
The big ones are cool, but there are small ones too, and usually they are way cooler, as they have the pro tools and no bullshit. But they die out, of course.
Ah yes, the one with the two parking lots. This specific one is my most frequented hardware store, you know, but even today I _still_ always park on the wrong side of the building relative to the items I need. :D
Only problem is: their assortment really varies with town size. The Bauhaus in my hometown probably has half the stuff I saw in this one... still good enough for most emergencies, but when you want specific brands you may be forced to buy online.
Spent many years working across Europe as an electrical service engineer. Can’t drive past a Bauhaus without a cheeky look around. I too have a soft spot for a Zollstock, we should start a support group😂
So at 6:39 in the video you have a large T key in your hand that is made for door locks. When you install a door lock but not have a cylinder in yet or door handle to open it, this tool with the pointy end can open de door, a bit further down you see a notch that work as a cylinder to lock the door. At the top you can use these square bits also for the door handle if the square pin is in place but no handle attached yet.
Oh my local Bauhaus in NL is always such a treat. My gf rarely lets me roam the store anymore because she knows I'll buy things I absolutely need for some odd job years from now. Love these videos!
I work in social housing & change 100’s of toilet seats. I never knew the universal tool existed until watching your latest video! I’ve found a version of them on eBay for £8 . Nice one, thanks !
I really miss the German hardware stores. Screwfix and Tool Station don't have the same possibility to actually browse for interesting items. It's fine if you know exactly what you want, but being able to handle the item and feel the quality, is much more useful IMO.
Don't even get magazine with Screwfix anymore, ABSOLUTELY HATE THAT. Loved looking through the catalogue at every page for things I'd never use but just want
Me too I could spend all day in them and often did.. I used to much of my timber sheet material as offcuts called "Rest" used to get some real bargains. I was using some tools and fitting at least 10 years before they were available in the UK
The silver tool you picked up and said it looks like it could go on a necklace is a lock multi tool, it's used for measuring euro cylinders and for operating multi locks on doors when there's no cylinder in the door and also has keys on the other end for gas and electricity cabinets
I was sceptical but I gotta say, that little Laser Liner Active Finder looks awesome for the price. The thing I miss most in the UK compared to South Africa is the hardware stores. I feel like I have to go to 3 different hardware stores and/or Amazon to find everything I can get in Builders Warehouse back in SA. And when it comes to tools I think most people prefer to hold it in their hands before buying.
Hi there! Sending warm greetings all the way from Australia. I really enjoy your fascinating and unique tool recommendations-I’ve even picked up a few items based on your suggestions. Keep up the great work!
Love these videos with different, unique, or just cool tools. Especially that they’re from different countries. I actually enjoy just bringing us along while you shop and getting to see the differences with hardware stores and tools from other countries.
Over here in the US we call them a "carpenter's folding rule" and they used to be VERY common... I do like the safety box cutter, though I will say that the older metal ones are a LOT thinner and but I do like the safety of the thick plastic one... Though the old metal ones we used YEARS ago seemed a LOT more secure than the new one you showed... The screw drivers with the cartridges, I have seen a LONG time ago over here(though I have no idea what brand they were sold under. The take apart tool chest/drawers is a great idea! The little black power screwdriver kit is a great bit of kit that is sold under multiple brand names, and it is a very low price alternative to a VERY expensive one that is variable speed and direction one that you control by just turning your hand in the direction you want to turn it... But the little cheap one you passed up has been a great little one, and YES you did make a mistake by not grabbing one.
Great to see the Einhell tools in today's video, I've been using them without issue for over 4 years now. Also spotted the Einhell zollstock in your collection, which pleased me as I was about to send you mine😊
I'm from Hamburg, Germany and have spent a lot of time in these tree markets myself, but have never seen some of these tools, like the Laser Liner Active Finder or the Duratech Double Drive. Nice informative channel with interesting tools from other regions. By the way, I became aware of your channel through your video with Colin Furze, that was great!
Aldi in England were selling these recently discounted to 99p! I nearly bought another one because they were so cheap, but I really think having two is not wife-justifiable.
From USA, love unusual tools, which is why I watch. When I was young tools in the USA were high quality and inexpensive. There are still quality tools, but most are expensive . As old man I have new category I call "old man tools" . These are tools that make it easier on my limited stamina and declining strength. My 1st tool in this category is my Dewalt battery powered caulk gun. I was finding it difficult to pump out a whole caulk cartridge. The Dewalt makes it possible to apply multiple caulk cartridges without my hand hurting. A side benefit is smother dispensing . Another is my Dewalt pruning shears which I use on my roses and other plants. More recently I got a Dewalt copper pipe cutting attachment for my Dewalt impact driver. I recently used it on a project to make many cuts, each of which was perfect and fast. I was so happy with it I got the Dewalt PVC cutter attachment. One of the problems with these tools is that to keep price down I buy them bare. I already have a fleet of Dewalt Batteries but these don't come with any bag ir storage boxes. If I have the time I am going to use your foam techniques to make inserts for some kind of carrier. BTW: I have had a "D" battery powered foam cutter for over 20 years which I got to work on projects with my son.
6:39 the end in your right hand is to operate the spindle on a front door mechanism and the cam on that end is to operate the lock with a cylinder removed.

6:38 This is a Neubauschlüssel, also called Architektenschlüssel. It gives you access to newly built houses before the door locks or door handles are installed, it opens doors of electrical installation, windows and other things too. In addition it has a scale on it that makes choosing the fitting lock cylinder easy, no matter what design the door is and it can be used for installing door handles. It's a pretty handy tool. 6:44 I'll need to have a closer look next week (need to visit a Baumarkt on monday anyway) , but judging by their style, these pliers are made by NWS. Love these videos, love a good rummage in a DIY store myself. Slowly building up my tool kit, and improving the existing stock. Still need my own Zollstock(s) though. Please keep these coming
Living in the Netherlands I'm very glad there is an Bauhaus nearby, best tool shop in my nearby area. In the Netherlands we have HBM machines it's also an nice tool shop, worth to visit once.
Thanks for highlighting the Duratech brand - they certainly have some good tools. They are also available on Amazon, but at almost double the price for the ratcheting screwdrivers.
Nice and interesting video, once again. I lobe the oldstyle KOLN ruler « Bauhaus » (like the architecture « style »). Can be nice in my little collection of rulers, and near my architecture Bauhaus books
Whats so special about the Proxxon Foamcutter is the fact that you can bend the cutting wire in almost any shape. And with the adjustable holding arm its posible to guide it without straining it. That is very handy in model crafting to cut natural forms out of syrofoam, link rocksurfaces and treebarks.
I love Zollstocks as well! I saw Colin Furze equipping his workshop with Shadow foam and to this day I still would love to get mine done the same. Would love to see you in South Africa!
When I was a kid, my father always had at least one folding ruler in his toolbox. I haven't seen one in years. Thank you for bringing back that memory.
Ido enjoy your videos showing the quirky tools as i live in Oman where large DIY shops are non existent and like you and many other men enjoy a good rummage around a tool section. Keep up the good work
FUNFACT in case you ever wondered about the precision of the "Zollstock" or "Meterstab" or "Gliedermaßstab" (almost none uses the last name for them , but i wanted to add that name aswell) it is categorized in 3 classes indicated by the oval sign in the front. An accuracy class of III in the oval field provided corresponds to a measuring tolerance of a maximum of 1.4 millimeters over a measuring length of two meters. An accuracy of III is common for wooden folding rules. An accuracy class II reduces the permitted tolerance to 0.7 millimeters with a measuring length of two meters. This is a common measurement for metal rulers and tape measures. With an accuracy of I, the tolerance is just 0.3 millimeters. Hard to achieve with a painted scale, which is why it is usually lasered. Those ratcheting pipe cutters are pretty dangerous epic, i remember me using one to cut a full wooden oak broomstick shorter for my little nephew
It’s nice to see that I’m not on my own my family think I’m weird that when we holiday in Tenerife one of the places I make sure I always visit is Las Chafiras a Canarian large hardware store to see what’s new. Although I have kerbed the buying as we only have so much room in our apartment please keep up the brilliant visits as it sometimes the only way some people will get to see what’s out there 👍
You answered my question without replying to my message. Thank you for getting the Proxxon cutter. There are these wands that I imagine would also work. Thank you for your enthusiasm. Your videos are awesome!
I really like your tours of different hardware stores and wish to do a Euro tour to different tool shops. I have been collecting folding rulers now I have been watching your show. In Nordic countries, we still use folding rules daily.
The Makita battery powered screwdriver you showed at the beginning of the episode is the Makita DF001DW In-Line Cordless Screwdriver. I live in Canada and I picked it up at a local Home Depot during a sale I couldn't tell you the price, as it's been awhile back, but, the kit is quite useful for assembly/disassembly of kitted items, or repair where a lot of screws are involved. Thanks for the episode!
Love the German tool shop, would love one of those fold out tapes. I’m a pipe fitter/plumber and have a few rothenburger tools. They do sell allot in the uk, but you mainly find them in the plumbers merchants. Which I think you will find is a great place to find some quirky tools! HPS Normally have a good range in their stores
I’ve always liked them rulers, ever since I picked a vintage one up from a carboot sale. I’ve also got one that folds out one way then swivels open for double length
This kinda reminds me of my childhood, loved going to my local Bauhaus and spending what felt like hours wandering around looking at everything they offered while waiting for my dad.
Thanks for the showcase of memories. Spent a number of years working in Germany and still have a good number of tools from when based over there. Sadly don’t have a single wooden rule left so if fortunate enough would love to win one.
Always a sucker for your DIY store and tool fair shops, and then a wish list of more tools. UK DIYer, with three folding rulers. A 3m yellow wooden one inherited from my dad, a 1m in my go to belt pouch, and a vintage 2ft Rabone boxwood and brass because I like how it looks.
That little dragons breath marker is genius, never seen it before. And the plumbers tool for toilets sure wish I had one of these for all those installs in the past. Thank you for all the shows cant stop watching you make it fun and exciting.
Love that each country has there own bits and bats and to see the einhell range in germany being displayed is great as i use them in the UK and i would highly reccomend them
When I worked as a joiners Labourer the foot rule was part of the basic tool cut along with a 5 metre tape measure 2 pencils and a Stanley knife .Thanks for the video
Another great video Jonathan. The Duratech electric screwdriver you left behind, is great for small electronics repairs, especially given the LED's. The Stanley quick slide sport knife has a quirk that always catches me out, if the slide out blade isn't locked all the way in, you can't open the other blade.
@@ShadowFoam I liked the Marxman marker not seen that might get one to try Plus the volt stick that looked quite handy I’m a solid fuel fire fitter so I look for tools that make my job easier
My grandad swore by his wooden folding ruler as he called it. Not seen them in years until i started following your channel! Gotta get myself one. They seem easier to use than a tape measure. Problem is, as you say those easily obtained are cheap compared to those you've get from abroad. Keep up the good work Jonathan
I am a 66yr old divorced woman. I probably own a drill, some screwdrivers and a hammer etc but I really don’t know why I can’t stop watching Shadow Foam! It’s like an addiction at this point.
Same. It’s Jonathan, he seems like the kinda dude I’d have a beer with lol

I've never thought of using 'em as barbecue tongs. Great idea. I'll adopt that. Danke Kumpel :D
I love the big German Diy stores.Far better than anything B&Q has
They can also be turned into a sick flying V air guitar.
The Zollstock is also often called a Meter.
If they have the angle scale on them, I call them multimeter.
Just to confuse/annoy people.

Just found your channel. Slowly watching your videos. Love the quirky tools you find.
Plenty of great items there
Great little hunt
That little dragons breath marker is genius, never seen it before. And the plumbers tool for toilets sure wish I had one of these for all those installs in the past. Thank you for all the shows cant stop watching you make it fun and exciting.
Another good haul. Loving the content. Inspiration you give is priceless.
I appreciate that! Which tool stood out to you?
@@ShadowFoam I have the Gerber so that would be my standout, Second as in new would be the Stanley Knife. Knifes and torches rock my world as such.
A lot of people collect torches of certain brand and make displays might be a future video idea.
Discoverd your channel today have been binging all day. Great vids. Now I got to get me some more tools.
In my line of work, i cut a lot of foam and rope. So that knife would be very usefull! Great videos, cheers from Norway.
Another great video Jonathan. The Duratech electric screwdriver you left behind, is great for small electronics repairs, especially given the LED's. The Stanley quick slide sport knife has a quirk that always catches me out, if the slide out blade isn't locked all the way in, you can't open the other blade.
Love seeing interesting and odd tools that I don't see here in the states. Thank you!
I love watching the obscure tools you find I never see anything like them in the tool shops I visit
Which tool was your favourite from this video?
@@ShadowFoam I liked the Marxman marker not seen that might get one to try
Plus the volt stick that looked quite handy
I’m a solid fuel fire fitter so I look for tools that make my job easier
You can use stainless steel fishing leader instead of nichrome wire in the foam cutter. Thinner wire might cut quicker.
I have nearly finished cutting out my new tool box and it's looking fabulous with your foam
Thanks David, appreciate the support mate!
German tools are the best quality tools. I'd love to own some. Love you content. Please keep 9t up.
We had those kind of box cutters when working at a certain German supermarket, quite handy when paired with a spare name tag magnet.
great tools, great give aways, always good see whats new out there
More to come! Thanks for entering! 👍
