    I seem to recall a cobbler (maybe Steve from Bedo’s Leather Works), saying that although Cordovan doesn’t crease, it is more liable to tear than bovine leather. If you’re interested in looking at other leathers, I’d suggest Kudu, which I think is almost exclusively tanned by CF Stead. A lot of British shoemakers have started using it.

    • @johnnyregs2378
      @johnnyregs2378 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      My reverse kudu grant stones are probably my favorite boots right now. It's super soft and a hog hair brush easily cleans it up and gets it looking great.

  • @laialbert
    @laialbert 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    Cordovan is very resilient, but other than cost/rarity there are 2 main downsides. 1) It has a tendency to rip under stress and 2) wherever you do crease/roll it, it is super permanent and will always fold in the same place. I have an old pair of Color 8 Indy boots that have been back to Alden a couple of times and still look great. But then again, I’m not nearly as hard on boots as you are and definitely will never NEED a PNW boot.

  • @RyTrapp0

    Shell Cordovan lineman patch & boot pocket! And other accents! The way it polishes up even after some abuse, it could make for some REALLY cool two-tone boots, contrasting with a traditional work boot leather that doesn't have that shine. Would probably make for a more financially sensible use of it too lol.

    Would love to see some more x-months on vids to see how they hold up after you've been wearing them for a while. I can't speak about it's durability since I'm no leather expert, but I do have to say I love the colours and patina-ing of it you get. Also I think the link to the boot pocket kit is broken. I get a 404 error.

    I love Cordovan for casual and semi-casual dress boots, nothing looks quite like it, and the ability to shine it up without products, save for a very very rare conditioning, makes it so special for these kinds of boots.

Outside US: Asics makes their cleats in k-leather on a running shoe last, with an actual running shoe drop/stack (on their Japan or Australia websites), Munich & Kelme (both Europe), and Adler has legit MIJ cleats, handmade in pre-ordered batches & are half the cost of the Mizuno MIJ cleats (my next pair of cleats will 100% be Adler).

    Fish oils are often used to in fat-liquors for leather and that will cause a degree of fishy smell. In some cases it only registers as an extra leathery smell, but it can also make it smell like dead fish. I have not personally worked with fish oil fat-liquor, but I know a tanner that claims it provides the best softness of all types of fat.

    Can cordovan go back to smooth shine after sweat damage? I have Horween cordovan wallet and it's been over 10 years, recently I find the side that is close to the body adsorbed a lot of sweat during summer, and the cordovan now has a very rough matte spot, I can also feel a bit of wetness on the inner side, it no longer has smooth shine like other side of wallet that is away from the body. I tried smooth the spot with deer bone, cordovan cream, horsehair brush, nylon cloth, nothing seems to help, is there anyway to recover it? or it's now a permanent damage?

    Great video! I love my cordovan dress shoes because it can take a beating and still come back with a special glow and luster. That being said, I also would not consider it as a good car to use on a worksite that is demanding. It’s like taking a Lamborghini sports car off roading, when an SUV or ATV would be a far superior tool to use. All leathers have specific functionality, some may have more applications than others but there really isn’t a leather for all occasions.

    Weston, I need to have Nicks replace my work boots outsole. I have went through two outsoles since I started wearing them in October. They originally had vibram sand outsole. It lasted only two months and the bottoms were wore out. I had a local cobbler replace it with a vibram Christie sole. These are almost wore out in three months. Which Nicks wedge sole do you recommend for the most durable sole? I work in an automotive factory where I am on concrete and abrasive steel flooring all day.

      It’s actually more of a fit issue. Any boot will do, it’s more common with skinny ankle proportions to calf. Happens most of the time when fitting women. Could also be result of the boot not secured well enough in the heel cup. (Wearing a boot that’s partially laced up) would be a lot more noticeable with cordovan though 😂

    Can you please convince Nicks to do a pair of sneakers with the leather thickness they use on their heritage boots?🤔🙂
    I believe they can do sneakers with better quality than Crown Northampton.
    You're the only one that can convince them.

    Who's the fool that would spend all that money on a shell work boot ? A work boot is not made to look pretty and shiny while working lol.
    Is there are such people then I'm super super surprised .

    Just badly built since the leather is not as thick and softer you need to double stack it in some places

      The problems with one-offs, you don't get iterations to work those kinks out. Still some pretty damn cool boots though!

    Nick's has insanely poor quality control. I own a pair of Renegades (English bridle) and Overlanders (Chromexcel), and the quality control issues on both are just off the charts. If you contact them about the issues, they'll just make excuses and try to gaslight you about them. As such, I will never buy another pair of Nick's.

      I've seen hundreds of pairs of Nick's boots worn by wildland firefighters, and I have never heard of a single issue with them. TF are you talking about?

      @drtyhay A year ago I received my builder pros. 3 months later while operating a shovel the vibram heal fell off, wasn't any nails in it whatsoever, just glue. I took them back they fixed them that day. Been great ever since. Nobody is perfect, and they fixed the problem.

      @@JB-mw5rg their newst Metta Chatarina does not smell like that though. People (i havent bought) say it is nicely smokey.
      Nb: i have handled Horween, Rocado, and Tuscana, but not Compiel and others.

    She'll cordavan over rated , I won't buy it because it reminds me so much of the fake plastic looking patten leather from 80s , plus many that don't know qualities of different leathers would think its plastic or fake leather . We all do care in some way what people think . You spend close to 800 to 900 on a shell and someone ask you hey is that patten leather ? Lol

    Somethings became really boring about his channel nowadays
    He's not an underdog exposing bad companies anymore
    I remember he cut in half a shoe identical to those hey dudes. Said they're trash. But because who KNOWS why. He cuts in half hey dudes which are 60 dollars. He somehow says they're amazing? And if you've touched those before you'd know how CHEAAAAAAP they feel. Bloke is a sold out bloke
