      I can tell you what I've done. I find them very easy to grow.
      I planted about 5 gladiola bulbs 9 or 10 years ago and now I have over 50, despite pulling most of the babies . I live in what is generally considered Zone 5 or 6 in most growing zone charts.
      In my zone I don't have to dig up the bulbs in the fall -- BUT! Not only are they planted 6" deep, I also cover them with maple leaves each fall to protect them from snow and cold over the winter. Because all my bulbs do well with this method of insulation/fertilization, I believe the pH in maple leaves are ideal for them.
      This is an older method of insulating a home in the winter, by the way, as well as gardens planted around the foundation. Rather than burning leaves, many home owners would rake the leaves into heaping piles along their foundations and clear them away in the spring.
      If you don't have maple trees, you can use any sort of leaves for insulation. Even grass clippings are good-- I've used them successfully, too. As the snow accumulates, it flattens the leaves but creates a solid barrier from the frost.
      What I want to know -- because I've never done it -- is how and when to trim glads back.

    I just planted some 20 minutes ago. I agree with the other comment. you never said how to grow them, but you did still give some info about them. I am wondering, once I cut them for cut flowers in the house how long until I get another bloom?

    I was hoping to hear something about the optimum type of soil. Also, do they grow best in shade, sunlight or partially shaded conditions?

    • @PAllenSmith
      @PAllenSmith  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are native to South Africa, so they like lots of sun and typically do best in sandy loam soil with good water drainage. Typically any soil that is good for growing vegetables is good for them. I hope that helps!!!

    If I cut them for vases, I find they do not flower again next year! Why? 😪

  • @cliffcarlo180
    @cliffcarlo180 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Somewhat confusing info. You said they have been there for 4 years then added that you plant them two weeks apart to stagger the flowering period. Surely after one year they will all bloom at the same time.

      Mine still bloom 2 weeks apart as I planted them 2 weeks apart 3 years ago...I guess Oklahoma winters haven't gotten cold enough to kill them...thank goodness...but, yeah, mine dont bloom all at once....
