My whole childhood my mom was a hoarder. She bought dishes and random stuff from an auction every week. I remember being 7 years old asking her "why do we need another crock pot because we have 5 already?". I never had a friend over, I had to sleep on the couch (my bedroom was full of her junk) and I wore the same cloths days in a row because she didn't do laundry like she should have. Because of how I lived as a child and most of my teenage years I will NEVER allow myself to buy unnecessary items. I keep every inch of my apartment clean and organized ESPECIALLY since I'm expecting my first child early next year. I will never put him through that. I know how isolating it feels....

Mikayla Myers how is she doing now? Did she get help or sort it out herself?

    • @mikaylamyers3920

@@jasminedearmas9915 No unfortunately she still buys junk all the time. About 4 years ago she fell and broke her femur bone. She lived at an in care facility to get therapy for her leg. That was the opportunity me and my sisters took to clean out her house (I was still living there at that time). When she came home she was good about keeping things clean (with my help and encouragement) but unfortunately like I said she still buys and hoards things she doesn't need. It's gotten worse since I've moved out. Actually, today she gave me a small folder for coupons (I don't use coupons nor have I ever) and she got mad at me because I didn't want it (I don't want items I will never use). She thought it was something I absolutely had to have and that it was the best thing ever. She treats almost every item like that.

I guess you have to treat it like a dementia. I presume your mother is not very old. It seems people that endure this ( I won’t say suffer) seem to be happyish in their situation.Thankyou for being brave enough to share this. Don’t keep your child from his grandmother, as your child gets older, all you have to do is explain that people live differently. Good luck x

that seems to be what happens with a lot of people, one of my grandparents was like that, the thing which made them change is when we told them if they donate their belongings, more people who were in the situation they were in could enjoy the things which they treated like garbage and hadn't seen in years.

Unfortunately, Olive has lived like this for so many years and she’s not going to change. It is hard for anyone to get that hoard under control let alone a legally blind, 80+ year old lady with no support system. I feel awful for her. My mother was the opposite and everything had to be in order. She didn’t stopped us from playing but, we had to put everything back in its place. We also had to keep our bedrooms in order even though we had a housekeeper. Mom, thank you.

I always struggle with hoarding documentries, I remember one that was on BBC, it was a elderly Jewish man, they visited him twice and refused to change. As soon as they told his story, I started bussing big boy tears......I remember them filming the local authorities removing some stuff for his safety. He was so angry, for him, it was like a flash back to what the Nazi done, it was too much for him ....and me after watching it....

I can completely understand where this woman is coming from. When you ask for help, people take advantage of your vulnerable situation. It's better to do things by yourself, it's actually less mental stress. People/authority become like sharks and want to take over your life and trample over your options and what matters to you. They don't care about you as a person. 👀

I hate going to her house, I try to hide my disgust..but it's getting harder, her HYGIENE is getting bad too. Thing is she has two jobs..hard worker. Her son still lives at home, (he's 33) and she has had the same boyfriend for 17 years living with her. Her bf is a total loser, he does very few things around the house. The son does NOTHING to help. She pays all of their bills. I am finding it harder and harder to be around her and not say anything.

@robin mcgregor I did...put signs in 3 churches and on cregs list and on let go. Even saying if they helped me run a yard sale in the spring I would split it with them 50/50. I even have my property for sale with a contract pending. Not my house just the land, I have 11 acres and I get to keep almost 1 ac and my house on a life right. After the closing the buyer pays everything taxas, water, sewer, insurance and even maintains my lawn for the rest of my life. 10 acres in my area is worth about a million dollars, but would take a long time to sell and I don't have time. He is getting the whole thing for $350,000 after I pay off the back taxas and mortgage still owed it will leave me about $200,000. If I watch my penny's and my soc security of $618 a month I should be fine. I found out fast that how many friends you don't have when you have no money. I even offered to give them $10 or $12 an hour once the property closes, and said I would put it in writing, but not 1 call. I really have tried. Even my brother and sister seem not to care at all either. I took care of my parents mostly mom for over 6 yrs she was sick. All I cared about was taking care if them. Little did I know my siblings were sceeming behind the scenes. I didn't know my dad had so much money my sister maneuvered my father into signing everything over to her after mom died. Dad had dementia when he signed those papers she had him sign. My sister was not even part of the family for over 10 yrs. She did not even come to moms funeral. Mom had told me they were putting their big house in NJ and property in Fla in my brothers name so if God forbid anything happened the state would not take the house. She told me after they both passed my brother was to sell the house or mortgage it and pay me off half of its value. I totally understood. After they passed dad just passed a month ago. My sister swooped up all the money and all the antiques etc in the house and my brother said" OH NO, They gave me the houses". So I am chit out of luck there also. To keep my spirits up a bit, I just say God must be testing me and when our times come he will know who belongs in heaven and who is going to be HOT for a very very long time.

@Naturewomenproductions There is a organisation that helps ppl it is called social services (welfare). I went to them for some kind of help food stamps, medical, perscriptions, glasses (I need a pair real bad) help with the house. They have a lot of help if you are a bumm!! I worked my entire life so I get $1003 soc security, out of that They take $145 a month for hospital insurance, $87 a month for perscription plan. Here is the catch.....they go by gross income, not by what you actually get. So the cut off is $1000 I make $3 to much. I started to write a arrival I want to send into the news paper. "Better to be a Bum in NJ", if I never worked and partied my whole life or if I were a druggie and decided to stay high instead of getting a job and working busting up my back the state of NJ would...GET THIS...give me an apartment all I have to pay is 10% of the rent. All I have to do is work 20 hour a week and I get to keep the money. They pay the utilities etc. They give you up to $250 a month in food stamps. They give you up to $200 a month in cash on a card you can spend anyway you want, just take it out of a ATM. They pay for all your doctors medical, get you glasses and a dentist for free. They will give you help with house work etc. Wait it gets better....they provide you with uber transportation to all doctors. If you are a druggie and now take methadone or something else so you don't do the illegal drugs, the state if NJ pay you 55 cents a mile to drive yourself to the doctors and methadone clinic every day. But if you are struggling, need a little help, worked all your life NOTHING!!!!

The lady who is there to help her get this somewhat under control needs to remember that the lady is old. She's not deaf. I would think the way she is talking about the inside of the woman's house was quite insulting to the woman she was supposedly there to help and didn't do much to make that woman want to accept her help. I would imagine nearly everyone would find the inside of her house "shocking" but not much is accomplished by saying that where the old lady can hear her.
"I don't hoard. I keep stuff." Glad she cleared that up. She only picks up things that she might need someday. One never knows when an 80 year old woman might need a good pram. You would think that her neighbors might have some complaints to file about the state of her back yard. Not only is it an eyesore but I would think it would also be rat heaven. As many of these shows as I have seen I still am no closer now to understanding it than I was the first time I saw such a show. There is nothing that inspires me to get rid of stuff better than watching a hoarders show.
I followed the Marie Kondo method (sort of ) to clear out my closet. I grouped all my tops and all my slacks and all my dresses. Because they were all grouped together for the first time I saw how many pairs of slacks I had. It was 60 (that's six oh) pairs of slacks. I IMMEDIATELY got rid of exactly half of them and then I ONLY had 30 pairs. Since that time I have been periodically going through stuff (not just clothing) and getting rid of things. I don't exactly follow Marie Kondo because the thought of taking all of ANYTHING in my house and piling it in the floor so that I have to sort through all of them and hang up or fold all clothing I want to keep or washing and organizing items other than clothing, makes me break out in hives. I have found that just telling myself to cut everything in half works very well for me. I had four sets of dishes so I gave two sets to a friend, I had a dozen SETS of sheets and I got rid of six sets, I had 20 bath towels, I got rid of 10, etc.
I also had watched a rather morbid but interesting video about "death cleaning". I forget which country this originated in but it seems like it might have been one of the Scandinavian countries. The concept of "death cleaning" is when you go through your house and get rid of things that you do not want your children, or whoever your heirs might be, to have to sort through and discard after your death. Like I said, it's rather morbid but our kids will be grateful that we did this after we die and they don't have 40 or 50 years of "Mom's stuff" to go through.
