I would definitely use junk yard engine with the reputation these engines have

@@NiXFiX I think it's the 2 on the upper side at the bottom does that sound right

You need to.replace the short block

No. You don't. Yes, it is a flawed design. But if a head gasket from the factory lasted 60,000, why can't a replacement last just as long?

@@NiXFiX its the root cause of the problem. They didnt bore the holes deep enough. This, apparently, is why they drink oil and fail.

@@chrismccowan totally agree. It is the root cause. But if you have the skills, a free weekend, and less than $50 for a head gasket, that beats paying $5,000+ for a new block.

I have to change the transmission on a 2012 kia optima...im pretty sure its the same setup as this sonata...would you say its easier to remove engine/transmission together and then with it all out swap the transmission? Or is it easier to swap the transmission leaving the engine in

Swap trans with engine in for sure. Only reason I removed it all was because engine was seized.

@NiXFiX ok I'm a little intimidated by it...I don't have a lift but I have all the tools...I was told that I should have enough room to get it out with the car up on Jack stands

@@macknumber9 I currently don't have a 2 post lift. I slid the trans back under the car (while it was up on jack stands) while I rebuilt the engine. Currently working on part 2 right now.
