Just to clear up some confusion - this is not my full time job! It's a hobby and the channel is still very much a net loss financially, which is absolutely fine as I love what I'm doing. I guess the comment near the beginning about "when I had a real job" might be confusing for anyone new to the channel. I'm self employed in my day job, not because I'm a secret millionaire businessman but basically because whatever neurodivergent thing is going on in my brain prevents me from functioning in a normal 9-5 😅
Nice to get a look around Rees's Museum of Computing. I can imagine it's great not to have one project that's taking a bit too long back log everything else, that's one of the things that really slows down my output rate.
It's very impressive! I mean, if someone told me 30 years ago that we could have a full quality studio at home with quality content uploaded every week, I would proboaly say "Yeah, right! And then you woke up!" 😄
Nice to see more about the history and how your space has developed over the time you've had it. I need a space like that at the bottom of my garden (maybe a bit smaller!).
I'm seriously jealous of fellow TH-camrs who live in areas with somewhat afforable real estate. It's insane where I live. A nice space like that could easily top $5k/mo. I resorted to buying an old school bus for a couple thousand. When I film I just have to make sure the rats aren't trying to sleep! Thanks for the tour! Also jealous of your organizational skills!
Very nice! Happy anniversary! I'm in the process of trying to get a studio space myself for my little channel. Should know something soon! ;) I may borrow some inspiration from you.
It’s really an amazing place to shoot videos. But all this makes me think about how different the treatment is that TH-cam gives to content creators in various countries. I have 150,000 subscribers with over a million monthly views, and I can’t even begin to think about renting a place to shoot videos....
I obviously don't know all the in's and out's of Rees's youtube life, but I imagine he is subsidising the rental with his personal income from his day job. Rees has always been clear that he's making videos of content he wants to see himself and that it's a hobby rather than chasing the algorithm, and if you watch Rambles you can see that the amount of money he gets from youtube itself is pretty paltry.
Thanks for the comment. I think one thing that perhaps I didn't make clear in the video is that this isn't my full time job - I'm sure the comment near the beginning about "when I used to have a real job" probably doesn't help in that respect, so I appreciate the misunderstanding 🙂 I'm very fortunate to have this space in that it belongs to a friend who lets me use it at a very reasonable price (free for the first few months) but the channel is still basically a net loss financially - and that's absolutely fine by me, this is my hobby after all and I do it because I enjoy the process of tinkering with these things as well as making videos about it.
Very few channels make a significant revenue, especially in the world of retro computing content. You have to really love making your videos in-order to keep going.
PS - My first clone as a PC1512, not so common here in the US. One Christmas, I got a 40 meg hard card for it! I wish I still had that computer. They're not as easy to find over here :(
Haha! Thankfully none yet. It's private land so no passing traffic and there's a very competent IT business next door who can handle that kind of thing for the businesses that are based here 😁
Are you sure that RM isnt a 386? , had one back in the day. I am just restoring an ICL version - they're both rebages of the same Siemens machine. They did make a 286 version but no pictures online - wonder if it's the same motherboard as the 386 is an sx. . if it is the 386 model, You can put 5v into the battery terminals to power it but you need a good 2 amps. The connector on the power board is very accessible. Planning on going for usb c pd for mine
Could you come over and help me set up all the camera stuff in my place? After seeing yours I feel in over my head by several astronomic units again. I offer free unhealthy German food and decent lodging. :P

What a lovely tour! This ongoing meta-story of the channel itself is just about as enjoyable to follow as the regular videos themselves.
That's very kind of you to say. I see you've been subscribed for 4 years now so you've been with me pretty much since the beginning! Thanks so much 😁
🤘
Studio looks great - glad you're enjoying it (and of course, enjoying your content)
What an amazing space you have. Thanks for giving us all the grand tour.
Looking forward to year 2 in the Samstudio!
I can't believe its been a year! You've done a great job kitting it out.

This just shows what can be achieved when you have a great landlord.. Just as RMC as well.. Keep up the good work, Rees...
Very interesting to see it all , great stuff
Amazing 😍
An impressive and well-organized collection! Thanks for sharing.
Great place! Thanks for taking us behind the scenes.
Enjoying these videos of you sharing your space!
cool man. it's interesting to see the retro PC stuff going on over in your parts
Really interesting tour, looks like you have a lot of material for future projects. And a literal Barn Finds video sounds good.
Nice to see more about the history and how your space has developed over the time you've had it. I need a space like that at the bottom of my garden (maybe a bit smaller!).
Love it
Very nice development, glad things worked out the way you hoped! Cheers and all the best along the way 🎉
Amazing. Thanks for sharing 🙂

Of course! Always happy to help

I suspect Rees can do all this due to his Patrons rather than youtube revenue.

One could be mistaken for thinking it is a computer shop! Does anyone anyone ever pull up and look for computer repair?

It may have been originally, I bought it as an empty case about 15 years ago. 🙂
@@ctrlaltreeshehe, you'd def know the spec then 😂
Life goals, sigh.

Of course!
Is that the US or Britain? (I was going to ask if it was full time business. But, what is your career?)
What is a 'NAS'?

@@ctrlaltrees Wow, that was fast!
