    XCOM 2: The Story So far - Earth has changed. Twenty years have passed since world leaders offered an unconditional surrender to alien forces. XCOM, the planet's last line of defense, was left decimated and scattered. Now, in XCOM 2, the aliens rule Earth, building shining cities that promise a brilliant future for humanity on the surface, while concealing a sinister agenda and eliminating all who dissent from their new order.
    Only those who live at the edges of the world have a margin of freedom. Here, a force gathers once again to stand up for humanity. Always on the run, and facing impossible odds, the remnant XCOM forces must find a way to ignite a global resistance, and eliminate the alien threat once and for all.
    Key Features:
    • XCOM ON THE RUN: Take command of the Avenger, an alien supply craft converted to XCOM's mobile headquarters. New open-ended gameplay lets you decide where to guide your strike team, how to grow popular support, and when to combat enemy counter-operations.
    • RECRUIT RESISTANCE FIGHTERS: Five soldier classes, each with its own skill tree, let you create specific soldiers for your tactical plan.
    • TACTICAL GUERRILLA COMBAT: New gameplay systems offer more tactical flexibility in combat. Use concealment to ambush enemy patrols. Loot enemies for precious gear and artifacts. Rescue VIPs and save fallen comrades by carrying them to the extraction point.
    • A NEW BREED OF ENEMY: A diverse cast of enemies from powerful new alien species to the ADVENT, enforcers of the alien regime, offer a distinct tactical challenge.
    • RESEARCH, DEVELOP AND UPGRADE: Configure and build rooms on the Avenger to give XCOM new capabilities on the battlefield. Use your Scientists and Engineers to research, develop and upgrade weapons and armor to fit your preferred tactics.
    • EACH MISSION IS A UNIQUE CHALLENGE: Go on missions around the world, from wildlands to the heart of the alien-controlled megacities, to the depths of alien installations. There are virtually infinite combinations of maps, missions and goals.
    • CREATE CUSTOM MODS: Community-focused tools allow you to create your own campaign, tactical gameplay, aliens, classes, strategy game features, and share within the Steam Workshop.
    • ENGAGE IN HEAD-TO-HEAD MULTIPLAYER: Mix-and-match squads of humans and aliens and battle head-to-head on randomly-generated maps.
    According to Firaxis Statistics, Rangers have the most kills of any class. They are followed closely by sharpshooters while specialists were dead last.

    Just a little side note: If you have a a soldier with a frost bomb and you encounter a group of archons you can use the frost bomb to get rid of the defense bonus. Meaning they are easier to hit.

    I don't care what the statistics say, in my experience, Archons are deadly accurate with their little rifle and have an absurdly high chance of disorienting or stunning with a melee attack. Wasting a turn with blazing pinions or not, they are among my highest priority targets when they appear in my games.

      I didn't think about that when I was recording the video, but arguably the most dangerous aspect of Blazing Pinions is that it could explode an item you're trying to recover and there's no way to stop it once they've activated the power. The good news is that this should be a truly rare occurrence.

    Very informative! To talk about "Dodge", is it true that 100% shots cant be dodged? Then thats the counter measure against archons dodging,

    • @TapCat
      @TapCat  7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I've seen conflicting information on whether 100% shots can be dodged, some people have claimed that aliens dodged regardless of percentage. This might be hyperbole, or it might have been true at one time and then patched out. Since I first heard the claim, I've paid attention to my own shots and haven't seen a 100% shot get dodged. But this was late in my last campaign and I don't feel like I have enough information to say for sure one way or the other (which is why I didn't say it in the video). But getting to 100% is never a bad idea, so if that's an option then by all means go for it!

    • @LiroRaeriyo
      @LiroRaeriyo 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I do remember something about all extra aim stat going towards countering the opponents dodge rating, so if you had say 110% aim built up, and the opponent (archon in this case) has 25 dodge, they will have a 15% dodge rating on the shot, but i might be misinformed about this as well.
      From what i remember, it was getting a CRIT that denied dodge, if you got a crit roll, then the dodge check is ignored entirely, though with the awkward way that crit is calculated, any situation in which you had more crit then hit chance (only really feasible with rangers and low level characters like rookies) your crit chance becomes your actual chance to hit, meaning dodge rolls are never calculated.
      Fun fact about the crit thing though, its so much easier to stack crit then aim on rookies since level has no effect (aside from associated skills) on crit rate, only gear, so having a rookie focus on crit is a more useful way to make them actually hit stuff, since a point blank attack with a gun using a superior laser while flanking and talon rounds ensure 100% hit chance even if the rookie can still only manage a mediocre 70% hit chance, makes those silly long range attacks more useful with shotguns as well since the crit chance is likely higher then the hit chance at those ranges, especially if rapid fire is used or any effects that reduce your accuracy but not crit are active on you.
      I could be remembering this all wrong though, but i did hear something to this effect from somewhere, and im almost 100% positive its for Xcom 2 since not many games also have a dodge rating as a 3rd calculation in a hit roll check.

    • @SCPHYsicsGeek
      @SCPHYsicsGeek 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +LiroRaeriyo To elaborate a little on the Hit/Crit chances in Xcom 2
      "Fun fact about the crit thing though, its so much easier to stack crit then aim on rookies since level has no effect (aside from associated skills) on crit rate, only gear, so having a rookie focus on crit is a more useful way to make them actually hit stuff, since a point blank attack with a gun using a superior laser while flanking and talon rounds ensure 100% hit chance even if the rookie can still only manage a mediocre 70% hit chance"
      I can see why you'd think that, and yes it is true that building crit chance is easier, you still need to roll the hit in order to get the crit! So Aim is still more important than the critical hit chance! The way that these work in Xcom 2 is that the Hit & Crit chance use the same dice roll! (which Imo is actually quite annoying) unlike in EU/EW when they had seperate rolls. So what this means is if you have a Critical hit chance that is higher than your aim/"to hit" chance, then as long as you land the shot it is guaranteed to Crit! Which again would emphasize your confusion with higher crit chance = better hit. If you are stacking rookies with crit chance to the point where it out performs there aim then whenever their taking flank shots hit they either always crit or miss.
      Now, on the flip side to this & the reason why I find this system to be annoying at times, if you're taking a difficult shot say for example; an Advent Capatin taking a shot at a unit in full cover and with some sort of aim debuff such as "disorient." Now, an advanced Captain has 70 aim, 50 with disorient shooting through full cover makes that a 10% chance to hit. Now the base chance to crit for the Captain is 10% and considering that the Dice roll for shots & criticals in Xcom 2 is the same, if the 10% chance for the hit rolls lucky then so does the crit! That's why when Advent/Aliens land very difficult shots they almost always tend to Crit you. I kinda hate the Xcom 2 dice rolls for this reason...

    • @TapCat
      @TapCat  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      To the best of my knowledge, getting 100% chance to crit does not mean you are guaranteed to hit. The game checks Aim and whether you hit and only then does the crit chance come into play. This is based both on my own experiences and reading about the research of others. If you have a source that demonstrates otherwise, though, I'd love to hear about it.

    • @SCPHYsicsGeek
      @SCPHYsicsGeek 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      @TapCat Exactly!! the Roll for the "to-Hit" is still more important for determining whether a shot lands or not. Just that in Xcom 2 if the critical chance either matches or is higher than the aim... it's guaranteed to crit as long as the shot lands. But the dice roll can still roll the miss.

    what about stun lancers? I have a tough time dealing with them in large numbers (my enemy within tactics are hard to shake at times). my game tends to spawn pods of 3 of them with an alien or advanced advent unit

      @r3n3gad34l1f3 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      *multiple pods

    • @TapCat
      @TapCat  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I don't remember ever encountering a pod of 3 lancers but they sound like a good target for a flashbang. It will both limit their mobility and reduce their aim. Poison would do that so you could use a poison grenade/bomb or venom rounds (a gunslinger with venom rounds using Faceoff would be ideal). Cutting their mobility is key because they get to attack even after their 2nd move and that makes their effective attack range ridiculously large. Beyond that, you just want to kill as many of them as you can ASAP. So use explosives to destroy cover and get high % shots and don't be afraid to use up any abilities with a cool-down if they boost damage (like Deadeye). That's about all I can think of off the top of my head, hope it helps!

    • @r3n3gad34l1f3
      @r3n3gad34l1f3 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      TapCat I didn't even think about that. I've been powering through your videos to help me get my bearings in xcom 2 and I must say its helped alot in my 3rd play through (1st glitched out on the hologlobe and my second is turning into a slaughterhouse for my troops due to my ineptitude). sometimes it's really easy to overlook how useful flashbang can be. When I build the proving ground I'll definitely look into experimental ammo and grenades. thanks!

      FWIW, most people get their butts kicked in early play-throughs, it's just a learning process we have to go through. I'm happy to help with tips whenever I can to try and make that process slightly less painful, good luck sticking it to the lancers!

    • @TapCat

      No, in my latest campaign, a lone archon still reliably uses blazing pinions and if there's a pod one of them will do it. This only works if you don't attack them, though. Once you hit them, they are guaranteed to come after you with a ranged or melee attack for at least one turn.

    I feel like Archons are the least impressive late-game enemies. Not just Blazing Pinions is basically a waste of their turn, but their attacks aren't that strong either. It's just damage and not that much of it. Andromedons are more durable, Berserkers can stun, Codexes are more annoying, Cryssalids are more punishing for mistakes... Archons are just frying meatbags with a fancy design.

      I intended to originally but when I made the guide for the berserker queen, a lot of it felt like a rehash of the viper king guide. The idea of doing it a third time wasn't particularly exciting, although I've always regretted it since then. While there's obvious carryover amongst the rulers, there are also real differences and it's probably been the most requested guide in the years since.

      He's a mean SOB. Dragon Rounds are excellent against all of the rulers because it will do damage every time he gets to "react." That will ensure you can get a timely heal if you need one. He deals a ton of damage so someone could easily die if you can't heal them. Because of that, I'd recommend saving your specialist for timely heals and only fire at the end of each turn, if possible. The frost bomb is garbage against him, so don't bother with it. Aside from that, stay off the rooftops and deal as much damage as possible to drive him away. One of these days, I may do a video about him but I'm not sure I have enough good ideas to make it worth while.

    My first kind of successful Commander Ironman was ended by a Archon. He was very high up and I didn't realize battle frenzy makes him attack indefinitely. So from the top of this building, he's just sniping down my best guys, I've got a guy carrying a dead troop, and a sniper that is actually level with the archon on another building. Needless to say it went terribly and it ended my Ironman. Almost got powered armor too.

    • @TapCat
      @TapCat  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very sorry to hear that, to play ironman is to know the pain of a mission that goes horribly wrong and undoes so many hours of good work. Archons are no joke once they go into battle frenzy and it's cruel how often their ability to fly gives them easy flanking opportunities.

    • @aeureus
      @aeureus 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just be adaptive, if he starts sniping, always head for high cover, hunker down if wounded, take overwatch or shots if you can hit him (preferably 65% or higher), get a ranger in close to draw fire and use a shotgun to give him a good slap. Don't carry anything unless you can evac on the next 2 turns, again using high cover, and free up your soldiers activities to take out the largest tactical threat.

    Theres a mod called A better AI, which basically nullifies a lot of your tips lol.. For example, Sectoid now no longer favors psi attack or zombie raising.. if he can hit your dudes, he will use his plasma weapon first.

      Given that I'm primarily aiming these videos at an audience struggling to come to grips with the game at a fundamental level, I'm not too worried about those who choose to use mods to significantly change how the game plays. If someone is confident enough to downloads a mod like that, I don't think they need my advice.
