@9min totes are a gear game changer. A few years from now you'll be fishing as family and nothing better than doing with your child.

Congrats on the baby, I’m gonna give you a very important pro tip, all the ideas you have in your head right now of how awesome it’s going to be to fish with your boy, throw those out the window until he’s about twelve, my son is 8 and he’s fished with me since he’s 4, it’s the most frustrating, irritating, non relaxing yet beautiful and worthwhile thing you can do to teach your boy to fish.

Totally agree. Was out of fishing scene for years, because had boys and wasn’t easy to get out. I take one or both to the outer beach or on charters and it can be very frustrating. But as long as they see and hear and touch what’s going on, it will hopefully stick with them and can carry over to them. Just make it as fun as possible for them. Good luck.

thank you! We hope to instill a love for fishing in him, but if he chooses something else or takes a while to come around, that’s okay too! Sounds like you’re finding the frustration well worth it to be able to share it with your son 🙂

I totally agree, I have 2 boys who are now in their late twenties. Fishing with them when they were little boys was hard work and amazingly rewarding at the same time! They are both decent fishermen today and fishing with them now is so much fun! They outfish me and they bust my chops every time we go and I wouldn't have it any other way! BTW, congratulations on the birth of your baby!

Congrats on your beautiful baby. Before you know it he will be out fishing both of you. A word of advice. When my kids were really young I used a voice activated voice recorder to record the sounds they made. The sounds they made as they fell off to sleep, the way they said things as they learned to speak. The way they said mommy or daddy. The way they improvised and mispronounced a word they couldn’t say. Conversations with you or maybe a sibling one day. The baby voice will change as he grows. Every stage is wonderful. To have an audio library to listen to in a few years will put the biggest smile on your face.

Dude, I feel your pain. Been striking out all Fall. Last week, I went about 3 hours with no catch. As I'm leaving, somebody walks past me and asked "Any luck", I tell him that I didn't get a bite all morning. I take a lunch break and moved to another spot. Then another 1-2 hours with no bites. Before packing up and leaving, I figured I'd just go back to the first spot to make some casts before the sun goes down. I run into the same guy from before. He tells me that people have been pulling in keeper stripers since about 30 mins after I left. So I rush back to the beach and there's about 10 fisherman with 30"+ stripers laying in the sand.
I threw my line out until the sun went down, but the blitz was already over. I'm heading out tomorrow, hoping for some luck

Hey man I know that feeling of waiting a long time for that contact. I ran offshore charters out of Anna Maria island Florida and tried surf fishing out on the Jersey shore , Brielle and Asbury Park areas. I still have 30 reels from the boat. I mainly used my 1990’s Penn Spinfisher 750ss & 850ss for striper fishing. You mentioned Van Staal, I get that they are sealed but who on earth can afford one. I averaged out my 26year career running offshore charters. It worked out to be 280 day a year or 7,280 trips. I got Shimano reels with the boat and the drags just couldn’t take the amount of use, Diawa was the least impressive. Penn Senators and Spinfishers have stood up to inexperienced customer abuse and basically commercial use and I still have 4 original ss series that I bought in ‘90.
I never tried a Staal and not to be a jerk, always considered them a status symbol.
What size Stall do you use?
The other questions is about braid. Customers can’t use it especially on a conventional but I watch guys surf fishing with it and wonder why go to the expense? (I’m honestly asking)
Other than reducing the diameter, what’s the advantage? I mean there’s not much structure to get “cut off” against and if the reel you’re using only has 25# of drag why do guys used such heavy line? You mentioned “casting distance”
With braid, you need a reel and rod guides that won’t be affected by the abrasiveness of braid. Then you’re spending more money on a replacement for your current setup.
The final thing is tying knots, you’re an experienced fisherman, you know 90% of lost fish is a bad knot.
Every year tackle companies have to invent ways to get us fishermen to buy more stuff. It’s fun in February going to the expo center and picking up the latest gear- trust me I’m an addict too.
It’s not always easy to come up with content, so read this “way too long comment” and make some content this winter kinda answering the questions I purposed. I just subscribed and like what I’ve seen so far. I swear I’m not trying to be all negative, I just see things differently because of my experience and age, I’m 52.
    Good luck man

Paulie Congrats on your new addition to the surfcasting community, I'm sure he'll be a great surfcaster as well, what kind of waders are those that you're wearing? I know they're not fancy or anything but I'm just curious maybe just to get as an extra pair because sometimes the LLbean and Froggstopps are just soaked and wet from a previous outing.

this time of year we usually catch on the same few lures. Diamond jigs, floating sp minnows, soft plastics and 5” mag darters. depends if there’s bunker around or sand eels around.
